Common Etiology

The buccal fat pad is an encapsulated mass located within the buccal facial spaces. It is relatively large in neonate and infants. A tiny perforation on buccal mucosa, fascia or buccinator muscle can lead to the herniation of buccal fat pad in young children. Trauma is the most common etiology. Such situation demands careful examination of oral cavity and thorough history taking to avoid any misdiagnosis. This paper reports a clinical presentation and management of herniation of buccal fat pad on a 22-month-old-girl following trauma to her left cheek region with sugarcane.

Intraoral herniation of the buccal fat pad is traumatic lesion of oral cavity occurring in young children. It frequently presents as an expanding pedunculated mass of soft tissue emanating from the buccal mucosa following a minor trauma to the buccal soft tissues. This article aims to report an interesting and rare lesion, wherein a tiny traumatic perforation of the buccal mucosa and buccinator muscle forced a large portion of the buccal fat pad to extrude into the oral cavity in a young boy. Such a situation can alarm any clinician and reinforces the importance of careful history taking and thorough examination, before treating patients. Abstract Several reports demonstrate successful use of the buccal fat pad (BFP) as pedicled graft in reconstructing small to medium sized maxillary defects. BFP harvesting has so far been shown to be an easy, well-tolerated, and uncomplicated technique for oral reconstruction. This case report proposes the use of BFP for repairing of the perforated sinus membrane during sinus augmentation.

The present study describes a clinical case in which the buccal fat pad (BFP) was used to improve the contour of the peri-implant mucosa. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of such an application in the literature. A 58-year-old woman presented with teeth #2 and #3 missing and an indication for extraction of tooth #4. After clinical examination and CBCT analysis, immediate implants were placed in the region of the extracted tooth and that of tooth #2 for prosthetic rehabilitation using a three-unit fixed partial denture. There was an extensive mucosal defect in the region of tooth #3, with vertical and horizontal changes in the contour of the mucosa. As an alternative to the use of a subepithelial connective tissue graft, we opted for displacement of the BFP and its accommodation on the alveolar ridge of tooth #3 to improve the buccal tissue contour. After 5 years of follow-up, satisfactory gain and maintenance of mucosal volume were observed in the treated area, as well as improvement of buccal tissue contour. The use of BFP seems to be a feasible alternative for filling and treating peri-implant mucosal defects.

Background: Keratoderma is a group of conditions characterized by hyperkeratosis affecting the skin on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands bilaterally. The classification of keratodermas depends on whether it is inherited or acquired and on its clinical features, including diffuse or focal involvement of the skin and the morphology of lesions present. Case Report: We describe the rare case of a 54-year-old female who presented with a nearly 40-year history of punctate keratoderma on her right palm and sole. History taking revealed that her biologic son also has unilateral left-sided keratoderma. The clinical presentation of unilateral keratoderma has been reported only four times in the literature.

Abstract Aim The purpose of this article is to describe a rare case of an epidermoid cyst in the buccal cheek region and a review of the literature. Background Dermoid and epidermoid cysts are developmental pathologies occurring in the head and neck region with an incidence ranging from 1.6% to 6.9%, and both cysts reported in less than 0.01% of all oral cavity cysts. Report A rare case of an epidermoid cyst originating from the buccal mucosa in a 38-year-old woman with a complaint of swelling and facial asymmetry in the left cheek just distal to the commissure for six months is presented in this report.
