Black female leadership: a preliminary step toward an alternative theory

The realization of black governance proved to be one of the freedom struggle’s most enduring legacies. So too was the continuation of white resistance. Chapter 4 describes the unintended consequences of majority–minority districts and black governance. African Americans may have taken control of city hall, but they lacked the types of private relationships needed to govern. The black-majority council and black regimes had inherited a “hollow prize”—the legacy of segregationist policies and demographic forces (e.g., the suburbanization of jobs and people) had taken their toll on predominantly African American cities. As Richmond’s black regime opposed their position as cue takers and tried to redirect resources to impoverished communities, whites embarked on another crusade of obstructionism. This obstructionism was made worse by the black-majority council’s firing of city manager Bill Leidinger and push for the need to redistrict. Between 1978 and 1982, racial factionalism impeded downtown revitalization, undermined the black-majority council in the court of public opinion, and gave rise to anti-VRA sentiment. By 1982, an African American named Roy West not only promised to restore racial harmony to city hall but also beat incumbent Willie Dell. Dell may have emerged as a champion for vulnerable communities, but she was a victim of gendered and racial assumptions about black female leadership and redistricting.

The essence of artefacts is typically taken to be their function: they are defined in terms of the goals or aims of the artisans that make them. In this paper, an alternative theory is proposed that emphasizes, via a reconstruction of Aristotle's various comments about the nature of artefacts, the role of the moving, or efficient, cause of artefacts. This account shifts the emphasis to the role played by the investment of expertise into the creation (and subsequent being) of artefacts. It turns out that expertise is prior in being and prior in explanation to the function of artefacts, and thus plays the most fundamental role in the explanation of the ontology of artefacts.

Contemporary depth psychology is under constant pressure to demonstrate and strengthen its evidence base. In this paper, I show how the analysis of large corpora can contribute to this goal of developing and testing depth-psychological theory. To provide a basis for evaluating statements about foot and shoe fetishism, I analyse the thirty-six most frequent three-word phrases (or trigrams) in a corpus of about 1.6 million words of amateur fetish stories written in the German language. Zipfian methods from quantitative linguistics are used to specify the number of phrases for analysis and I argue that these reflect the core themes of the corpus. The analysis reveals three main dimensions. First, it corroborates the observations of the early sexologists that foot and shoe fetishism is very closely intertwined with sadomasochism. Secondly, it shows that genitalia-related phrases are also common, but an examination of their contexts questions Freud's theory that fetishism results from an assumption of female castration. Thirdly, it reveals that the mouth also plays a key role; however, the frequent co-presence of genitalia references in the same texts does not seem to support straightforwardly the most common alternative theory of fetishism based on object relations. Future research could valuably extend this approach to other fetishes and, in due course, to other depth-psychological constructs.

The Catholic Church, constructed on an all-male clerical model, is a hierarchical and gendered institution, creating barriers to female leadership. In interviewing members of the clergy and women religious of the faith, this article examines how female non-ordained and male clerical religious leaders engage and influence social policy. It specifically addresses how women religious maneuver around the institutional constraints of the Church, in order to take action on social issues and effect change. In adding to the scholarship on this topic, I argue that part of the strategy of women religious in navigating barriers of the institutional Church is not only knowing when to act outside of the formal hierarchy, but realizing when it is in the benefit of their social policy objectives to collaborate with it. This maneuvering may not always safeguard women religious from institutional scrutiny, as seen by the 2012 Doctrinal Assessment of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, but instead captures the tension between female religious and the clergy. It also highlights how situations of institutional scrutiny can have positive implications for female religious leaders, their policy goals and congregations. Finally, this examination shows how even when women are appointed to leadership posts within the institutional Church, they can face limitations of acceptance and other constraints that are different from their female religious counterparts working within their own respective religious congregations or outside organizations.
