Abstract AISI Type H26 hot-work tool steel is the 18 tungsten-4 chromium-1 vanadium high-speed composition with lowered carbon to provide a high-degree of toughness. It has high red hardness and good resistance to abrasion. It is preferable to the conventional hot-work tool steels for applications in which higher hardness must be maintained at elevated temperatures. It is also recommended in cold-work that involve long runs, but should not be used where liquid cooling is required. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-294. Producer or source: Tool steel mills.

Abstract AISI Type T4 is made by adding 5% cobalt to the conventional 18% tungsten-4% chromium-1% vanadium (AISI Type T1) tool steel. The cobalt dissolves in the ferrite and strengthens the matrix of the steel whereas the other alloying elements form carbides. Thus the cobalt increases the hot or red hardness, thereby enabling the tool to maintain a higher hardness at elevated temperatures. Type T4 is well adapted for cutting hard, gritty materials such as cast iron or other abrasive materials and for cutting nonferrous alloys at high speeds. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, and hardness as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-395. Producer or source: Tool steel mills.

Abstract AISI Type M1 is a general-purpose high-molybdenum, low-tungsten type of high-speed tool steel. It has an excellent combination of cutting ability, toughness and finishing properties. Its cutting ability is good except for heavy-duty, continuous cutting operations where the ultimate in red-hardness is required. Its toughness is as great as that of any other high-speed steel. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-314. Producer or source: Tool steel mills.

Abstract AISI Type M7 is a molybdenum type of high-speed steel. It is somewhat similar to AISI Type M1 tool steel but with higher percentages of carbon and vanadium to provide an improvement over AISI Type M1 in cutting characteristics without a significant loss in toughness. It is suitable for a wide variety of cutting-tool applications where improved resistance to abrasion is required. The many uses of Type M7 include twist drills, end mills, shear blades, punches, milling cutters, lathe tools, taps and reamers. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, machining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: TS-483. Producer or source: Tool steel mills. See also Alloy Digest TS-468, January 1987.

Abstract UNS No. T30407 is a high-carbon chromium cold-work tool steel containing vanadium (4.0%) and molybdenum (1.0%). Its carbon and vanadium form a vanadium carbide that provides war resistance many times greater than that of UNS No. T30403 (AISI Type D3). UNS No. T30407 was developed for applications where extreme abrasive wear is needed. Its many applications include briquetting dies and punches, brick mold liners, pottery, tools, broaches, meat-chopper plates and cold-extrusion dies. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-439. Abstract AISI Type 1.2 is a chromium-vanadium tool steel of modest hardenability and variable carbon content (nominally 0.50-1.10% carbon). At its lower carbon levels, it is used for tools requiring toughness and resistance to shock and vibration. At its higher carbon levels, it is recommended for resistance to abrasion, fatigue and wear. It is used for both hot-work and cold-work applications. Among its many uses are automotive gears, forgings, gun barrels, shafts, wrenches, chisels, punches, lathe spindles, axes, shear blades, dies, files, reamers and drills. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, machining, and joining. Filing Code: TS-416. Producer or source: Tool steel mills.
