Abstract AISI Type M1 is a general-purpose high-molybdenum, low-tungsten type of high-speed tool steel. It has an excellent combination of cutting ability, toughness and finishing properties. Its cutting ability is good except for heavy-duty, continuous cutting operations where the ultimate in red-hardness is required. Its toughness is as great as that of any other high-speed steel. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-314. Producer or source: Tool steel mills.

Abstract TATMO V-N is an AISI Type M7 high-speed steel modified by alloy balancing and a nitrogen addition to develop superior hardness response in heat treatment. It is an excellent grade for many cutting-tool applications requiring an optimum balance of red hardness, edge toughness and wear resistance, such as drills, taps, end mills, reamers and milling cutters. Its combination of outstanding properties and high hardness makes Tatmo V-N a logical alternate for cobalt high-speed steels in many cutting-tool applications. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, machining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: TS-452. Producer or source: Latrobe Steel Company.

Abstract AISI Type M42 is capable of being heat treated to Rockwell C 68-70; in fact, it is a super high-speed steel. Its combination of composition and properties makes it suitable for machining high-hardness alloys and difficult-to-machine superalloys. Excellent wear resistance and high hot hardness are obtained in Type M42 without loss of cuttting-edge toughness. Typical tools made from this steel are broaches, drills, gear cutters and milling cutters. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-476. Producer or source: Tool steel mills.

Abstract AISI Type M7 is a molybdenum type of high-speed steel having improved cutting efficiency over AISI Type M1 high-speed steel. Type M7 was designed to offer increased wear resistance while retaining the toughness characteristic of molybdenum-type high-speed steels. It is suitable for a wide variety of cutting-tool applications where improved resistance to abrasion is desired. Typical applications include twist drills, end mills, form tools, reamers and milling cutters. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, machining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: TS-468. Producer or source: Tool steel mills. See also Alloy Digest TS-483, October 1987.

Abstract AISI Type T5 is a tungsten high-speed steel to which cobalt (8.9%) is added to provide high and unusual red hardness. It is particularly well adapted for heavy-duty cutting and high-production cutting tools. Because of its high red hardness, a cutting edge can be maintained under conditions of speed, feed and depth of cut that would not be possible with ordinary high-speed steels. Typical applications of AISI Type T5 are lathe and planer tools, reamers, milling cutters and twist drills for heavy-duty cutting. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, and hardness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, machining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: TS-389. Producer or source: Tool steel mills.
