The Nearctic species of Saotis Förster, 1869 (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Ctenopelmatinae)

Sixteen North American species of the genus Saotis Förster, 1869 are reviewed. Most of them have Holarctic distribution. Four new species of this genus are described: S. erythropleura sp. nov., S. rufigaster sp. nov., S. tinctor sp. nov. and S. truncator sp. nov. The Nearctic subspecies of four Holarctic species are described and redescribed: S. brevispina lissor subsp. nov., S. granulator albator subsp. nov., S. renovata rufipes subsp. nov. and S. pygidiator nearctor Kasparyan, 2009. A key to the Nearctic species of Saotis is given. The status of the European Iskarus Kolarov, 1987 as a monotypic subgenus of the genus Saotis is justified due to peculiarities in structure of its ovipositor.

AbstractThe Elachista tetragonella group is redefined, its limits extended to include the genus Biselachista Traugott-Olsen & Nielsen, 1977. The North American species of the tetragonella group are described and illustrated, and a key is given to the males. 19 species are recognized in the Nearctic region, including 12 new species: Elachista pyrrha (Alberta), E. absaroka (Wyoming), E. calusella (Florida), E. beothucella (Newfoundland), E. glenni (Illinois), E. cerasella (Nebraska), E. serra (Labrador), E. huron (Quebec), E. vinlandica (Newfoundland), E. ciliiyera (Mississippi), E. lenape (New Jersey) and E. pelaena (California). The male of E. inaudita Braun and the female of E. leucosticta Braun are described for the first time. Elachista eleochariella Stainton and E. albidella Nylander (= E. tanyopis Meyrick, syn. n.) are recognized as Holarctic species.

Abstract>The status of the genus Plega is discussed and a preliminary survey of the North American species is presented. Plega yucatanae, a new species reared from the cells of Megachile exaltata Smith, is described and compared with its near relatives. The immature stages are described and biological information is given.

AbstractThe North American species of the genus Olophrum Erichson are revised. Seven species are recognized, the holarctic species O. latum Mäklin, O. boreale Gyllenhal, O. consimile Gyllenhal, and O. rotundicolle C. R. Sahlberg; the eastern North American species O. obtectum Erichson, and the new species O. cascadeuse known from northern California and eastern Oregon and O. idahoense known from southern Idaho.Lectotypes are designated for O. marginatum Mäklin (= O. consimile), O. parvulum Mäklin (= O. consimile), O. convexum Mäklin (= O. rotundicolle), and O. convexicolle LeConte (= O. rotundicolle). The following new synonymy was established: O. bernhauerianum Scheerpeltz, O. recticolle Scheerpeltz, O. recticolle curtipenne Scheerpeltz are synonyms of O. consimile; O. quesneli Hatch is a synonym of O. boreale; and O. brevicolle Bernhauer is a synonym of O. latum. All species are described and illustrated with scanning electron photomicrographs and line drawings, five maps showing the North American distribution of each species are provided, and a key is presented to aid in the identification of the species. All available records and biological data for the species are provided.

AbstractGroup VII of North American Ips contains I. thomasi, new species, I. borealis Swaine and I. swainei R. Hopping. They are less than 4.0 mm. long and females have the front of the head or at least the vertex smooth and shining, impunctate, or with very fine sparse punctures; males are more coarsely granulate-punctate on the frons. The species are described and a key is given. All breed in Picea in Canada and northern United States.

AbstractMorphological, life history, and distributional data are presented for North American species of the subgenus Stygomomonia (sensu stricto) Szalay, 1943. Adults of the seven previously recognized species are redescribed, and deutonymphs of five of these species are described for the first time. Two species, S. (s.s.) neomexicana Cook and S. (s.s.) occidentalis Cook are substantially revised on the basis of an examination of the types and extensive series of newly collected specimens. Three new species are described, S. (s.s.) californiensis on the basis of deutonymphs and adults, and S. (s.s.) imamurai and S. (s.s.) cooki on the basis of adults. A new diagnosis of the subgenus is proposed and discussed, the relationships of the various species are discussed, and a key to deutonymphs and adults of North American species is presented. New distributional data are presented for all species, and dispersal patterns from Pleistocene refugia are discussed.

While investigating the biology of the North American species of Hypomolyx, field workers in Manitoba found a vestigial, or short-winged, and a long-winged form under apparently identical conditions in about equal numbers. Although biological differences were nor then apparent, there was doubt as to whether they were dealing with one dimorphic species or with two distinct species, A search for morphological characters brought to light numerous differences between the two forms, supporting the view that two species were present. These differences, a description the previously unrecognized species, and notes concerning the status of the genera Hylobius and Hypomolyx are reported below.

A long tradition of separate Nearctic and Palaearctic taxonomic studies of the diverse aleocharine rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) has obscured the recognition of Holarctic species and detection of adventive species in both regions. Recently, integrated study of the two regions through detailed morphological comparisons and development of an authoritatively identified DNA barcode reference library has revealed the degree to which these two aleocharine faunas are interconnected, both naturally and through human activity. Here this approach is adopted to recognize new species, reveal Holarctic species, and recognize adventive species in both North America and Europe. The following new species are described: Isoglossa triangularis Klimaszewski, Brunke & Pentinsaari, sp. nov. from British Columbia; Gnypeta impressicollis Klimaszewski, Brunke & Pentinsaari, sp. nov., from Ontario, Maryland and North Carolina; Aloconota pseudogregaria Klimaszewski, Brunke & Pentinsaari, sp. nov., from Ontario and Virginia; and Philhygra pseudolaevicollis Klimaszewski, Brunke & Pentinsaari, sp. nov. from eastern Canada. Dasygnypeta velata and Philhygra angusticauda are revealed to be Holarctic species, resulting in the following synonymies: Dasygnypeta velata (Erichson, 1839) = Gnypeta minuta Klimaszewski & Webster, 2008, syn. nov. and Philhygra angusticauda (Bernhauer, 1909) = Atheta (Philhygra) pinegensis Muona, 1983, syn. nov. The Nearctic species Hylota ochracea (and genus Hylota), Thecturota tenuissima, and Trichiusa robustula are newly reported from the Palaearctic region as adventive, resulting in the following synonymies: Hylota ochracea Casey, 1906 = Stichoglossa (Dexiogyia) forticornis Strand, 1939, syn. nov.; Thecturota tenuissima Casey, 1893 = Atheta marchii Dodero, 1922, syn. nov.; and Trichiusa robustula Casey, 1893 = T. immigrata Lohse, 1984, syn. nov. The Palaearctic species Amarochara forticornis, Anomognathus cuspidatus, Oligota pumilio, and Parocyusa rubicunda are newly confirmed from the Nearctic region as adventive, resulting in the following synonymies: Parocyusa rubicunda (Erichson, 1837) = Chilopora americana Casey, 1906, syn. nov. and Anomognathus cuspidatus (Erichson, 1839) = Thectura americana Casey, 1893, syn. nov. The genus Dasygnypeta, sensu nov. is newly reported from North America, Paradilacra is newly reported from eastern North America, and Haploglossa is newly reported from Canada, resulting in the following synonymy: Paradilacra densissima (Bernhauer, 1909) = Gnypeta saccharina Klimaszewski & Webster, 2008, syn. nov. Native Cyphea wallisi is newly reported from across Canada and C. curtula is removed from the Nearctic fauna. The status of both Gyrophaena affinis and Homalota plana is uncertain but these species are no longer considered to be adventive in North America. Three new combinations are proposed: Dasygnypeta baranowskii (Klimaszewski, 2020) and D. nigrella (LeConte, 1863) (both from Gnypeta) and Mocyta scopula (Casey, 1893) (from Acrotona). Dolosota Casey, 1910, syn. nov. (type species Eurypronota scopula Casey), currently a subgenus of Acrotona, is therefore synonymized with Mocyta Mulsant & Rey, 1874. Additionally, four new Canadian records and 18 new provincial and state records are reported.
