The article discusses and analyzes the democratic potential of theatre-going within the framework of cultural policy. Theoretically, the article is based on three different approaches: theatre research and the link between theatre and democracy, cultural policy research on the strategy of democratization of culture, and the democracy theory of James S. Fishkin. The analysis is based on the empirical material of thirty-one theatre talks carried out as part of an audience development project and focuses on four different aspects of the democratic potential of theatre: First, how the theatre talks gave the participants the opportunity to reflect on the experience and thus gain a better understanding of the theatrical event. Secondly, the importance of the social setting of the theatrical event, and thus of creating a safe framework for new theatre visitors. Thirdly, the article provides a critical approach to a target-oriented approach to audience development in which the content of the performance should be matched with certain audience segments. And fourth, the article points to an outcome of the experience related to the challenging of one’s own view point and thus expanding one’s horizon.

Subject The new wave of agitation against government misbehaviour across the Balkans. Significance Between May and July 2016, there were five mass demonstrations against the controversial Belgrade Waterfront development project. The Don't Let Belgrade D(r)own movement has rallied tens of thousands in protest against high-level corruption, abuse of power and misappropriation of public resources. Impacts Protests will enhance accountability and raise awareness of state capture and abuse of power. Civic mobilisation will slow down authoritarian backsliding, but cannot fix dysfunctional regimes. Serbia seems more open than its neighbours to campaigns facilitated by modern social media.

Speech-language pathologists providing services to handicapped children have pointed out that special education in-service programs in their public school environments frequently do not satisfy the need for updating specific diagnostic and therapy skills. It is the purpose of this article to alert speech-language pathologists to PL 94-142 regulations providing for personnel development, and to inform them of ways to seek state funding for projects to meet their specialized in-service needs. Although a brief project summary is included, primarily the article outlines a procedure whereby the project manager (a speech-language pathologist) and the project director (an administrator in charge of special programs in a Utah school district) collaborated successfully to propose a staff development project which was funded.
