✓ An arteriovenous malformation associated with an underlying benign astrocytoma of the right frontal lobe is reported and the radiological and pathological features discussed. Previous reports of multiple primary tumors of the nervous system are reviewed and the few cases of vascular malformations associated with gliomas noted.

✓ The authors present the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of a malignant intracerebral nerve sheath tumor that occurred in the right parietooccipital lobe of a 4-year-old girl. Computerized tomography scanning and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a 5 × 5 × 4—cm multiloculated mass with considerable enhancement of the irregularly shaped septa and clearly calcified areas within the mass. Among five cases reported in the literature, this patient is the youngest and represents the first case in which there is radiological evidence of intratumoral calcification.

✓ A case of an infratentorial dural arteriovenous malformation associated with an intracerebellar hematoma is reported. This malformation was fed by meningeal branches of the right vertebral artery and was drained exclusively by pial veins in the posterior fossa.

✓ A rare case of multiple primary hydatid cysts of the brain is reported in a 9-year-old girl. There were five cysts, occupying most of the right supratentorial region. The biggest cyst measured 9 cm across, while the smallest one was 4.5 cm in diameter. The diagnosis was based on computerized tomography findings. The patient did not have any evidence of hydatid disease elsewhere in the body. The delivery of all the cysts resulted in the dramatic neurological recovery of this patient.

✓ In this article the authors report the case of a mixed cerebrovascular malformation in which a true arteriovenous malformation (AVM), harboring a nidus, is associated with a venous malformation that serves as the draining vein for the nidus. Despite the authors' preoperative rationale for exclusive extirpation of the AVM, an inadvertent injury and the obliteration of the venous malformation generated delayed postoperative neurological deterioration, which could clearly be attributed to venous hemorrhagic infarction. Because this is only the second instance of this type of mixed vascular malformation of the brain reported, which also underscores the concept of nonsurgical treatment of venous malformations, the authors discuss the diverse literature regarding mixed vascular malformations and the treatment of venous malformations.

✓ Two cases of cryptic vascular malformation that were not demonstrated by cerebral angiography were detected by computerized tomography. One of these patients had a cavernous angioma in the fourth ventricle with recurrent subarachnoid hemorrhages, and the other harbored a small arteriovenous malformation and intracerebral hematoma. The usefulness and limitations of computerized tomography in the identification of cryptic vascular malformations are discussed.

✓ A 25-year-old man presented with nontraumatic cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea and meningitis. On investigation, he was found to have a multiloculated intracerebral cystic lesion of the right frontal lobe with a bony lesion inside the cyst, just above the right cribriform plate. Surgery revealed multiple grape-like cystic pedunculated lesions with narrow stalks attached to a bony outgrowth which was adherent to the right cribriform plate. Macroscopically and microscopically, the excised lesions were similar to nasal polyps.

✓ The first case of intracranial sparganosis to be reported from the United States is presented. The patient, a 27-year-old woman, complained of focal seizures involving the right lower extremity. A left parietal parasagittal craniotomy was performed, and a granuloma containing a sparganum was excised from the parietal lobe. The clinical and pathological features of sparganosis are reviewed. Only five cases of intracranial sparganosis have previously been described.
