This presentation explores and reflects upon the presenter’s experiences after moving and adjusting to a new culture at a large university in deep-south Texas, on the US/Mexico border, and how those experiences align with current research available regarding cultural considerations in a therapeutic environment. The presentation reviews several case studies and their relationship to six important cultural considerations when working with Hispanic or Latino students. The presentation also explores the important role families play in the recovery process for Latino students involved in Collegiate Recovery Programs and recommendations for CRPs to assist in the involvement of families in programming. Attendees will learn how the presenter learned the importance of understanding the vital role culture plays in different recovery communities and how that affects students in or seeking recovery.

The fact that engineering is involved in highly political issues—from climate change caused by fossil fuel extraction to how we understand truth itself because of deepfakes—makes it imperative that we find new ways to highlight the crucial role that engineers and engineering play in shaping society, and new ways to hold engineers and engineering accountable.  We have designed, built, and installed an interactive art installation called When Mental Walls Lead to Physical Walls to generate public conversation about the social responsibility of engineers and engineering, using the US-Mexico border wall as a case study.  We find that the politically charged nature of the topic might make it difficult for attendees to speak directly to ideas of social responsibility.  At the same time, the installation provides opportunities for attendees to question, critique, and reflect on the effectiveness and impacts of the design of the border wall and the motivations engineers might have in working on this project.  With proper planning and execution, the installation can be used as a research tool to understand how diverse audiences—from engineering students to those who may not have any experience in engineering—understand the role of engineering in society.

This study investigates the information flow between non-deliverable forward (NDF), spot, and forward US dollar–rupiah exchange rates during the post-Quantitative Easing (QE) period. Our results show a unidirectional information flow from NDF to the spot and forward rates in the post-QE period. We also find that the Indonesian government securities (IGS) played a vital role during the QE period, while international reserves preceded the US dollar–rupiah spot, forward, and NDF exchange rates post-QE. Hence, international reserves became an important policy variable in managing the currency value. Our finding redefines the role of IGS as a policy tool. As a policy suggestion, the Bank Indonesia should maintain a sufficient amount of foreign reserves to mitigate foreign exchange risks of the rupiah.

Introduction:The US, as well as many countries, are being beseeched by more natural and man-made events; both small (e.g., shootings) and geographically vast (e.g., floods). Due to a myriad of issues, traditional first responders i.e., EMS, fire department, and police cannot be expected to be the only trained lifesavers on the scene. In the US (as in many countries), it is imperative to begin the discussion to better understand the role of the “injured” and “immediate” responders and how they interact with the “first” responders.Aim:To open a discussion amongst disaster experts about the merits of training and subsequent promotion of a curriculum for “immediate” responders. Methods:Literature review.Discussion:After recent evaluations of events, it is postulated that there are three categories of responders: the injured, the immediate, and the first (EMS, fire department, police). The premise upon which disaster risk reduction and building community resilience are achieved begin with strengthening, empowering, and equipping local populations with the appropriate tools. This would involve education, skills, and training. With the average general public trained, and if they are one of the first two categories, then the community would not only be better able to assist themselves, but also be able to integrate into the recovery process much more quickly and fully. By doing this, they will be empowered to take care of themselves, neighbors, and community, which in turn increases local resilience.

A large and highly valuable category of forensic evidence consists of patterned impressions created during the perpetration of a crime. These crime scene artifacts, such as fingerprints or tire tracks, offer visual sensory information that is assessed by trained human observers and compared to sensory experiences elicited by model patterns that would have been produced under a hypothesized set of conditions. By means of this “forensic feature comparison,” the observer makes a judgment about whether the evidence and the model are sufficiently similar to support common origin. In light of documented failures of this approach, significant concerns have been raised about its scientific validity. In response to these concerns, the US Department of Justice has made assertions about how forensic examiners perform feature comparison tasks that are not consistent with modern scientific understanding of the processes of sensation and perception. Clarification of these processes highlights new ways of thinking about and improving the accuracy of forensic feature comparison and underscores the vital role of science in achieving justice.

Thanh Hoa is one of the 28 provinces and cities in Vietnam which have sea and islands, which leads to Thanh Hoa’s involvement in Vietnam national maritime strategy. In the course of history, the two wars against the French colonialism and the US imperialism to defend the country have proved its vital role. The paper clarifies the role of the sea and islands in Thanh Hoa province, which means a great deal in Vietnam maritime strategy now.

The Afghan people suffered a lot from war on terror, security issues, and political and economic instability since US invasion in 2001. Pakistan being an important neighbouring country of Afghanistan can play a vital role in bringing amity and stability through facilitating peace process. Both the US administration and Afghan government demand Pakistan to influence and bring the Taliban to the table talks. In this context, this study aims to explore Pakistan’s role in the ongoing peace process that has so far created an understanding among the stakeholders that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is in the interest of the region. The study finds that there are greater issues to be dealt with carefully e.g., the governance system of the country, the constitution, and a viable power-sharing formula to be acceptable to all the stakeholders. Any successful peace deal needs a strong commitment on the part of all the stakeholders. Peace is the need of the hour not only for Afghanistan but for the whole region as well. Pakistan needs to continue her support to the Afghanistan’s stability and play its due role in the peace negotiations in the greater regional interests.
