This article examines the lead-up to the recent Palestinian legislative elections, looking especially at the Fatah's long-brewing internal crisis, born of Fatah's inability to reconcile its role as a national liberation movement with that as ruling party of the Palestinian Authority. The author assesses the impact of the new reality presented by Hamas's victory on Hamas, Fatah, and the international community, specifically addressing the post-election strategy put forward by certain Fatah elements, and backed by the United States, to undermine Hamas's victory by shifting power away from the Hamas-dominated legislative branch to the executive under the presidency of Mahmud Abbas.

The fourth victory of Daniel Ortega and the Sandinist National Liberation Front (SNLF) (presidential election 2016, Nicaragua) secured a nickname “ the Family” among his close circle and the leadership of the Front. In addition, his in uential spouse, Mrs. Rosario Maurillo, who was nominated for vice-president, received the second most important governmental post. Presidential couple and the leadership of SNLF hold a tight grip on the governance of the country irrespective of fact, that the majority of ex-companions joined opposition and founded the Sandinist Renovation Movement (SRM). Uncompromising position taken by the former “ comandantes” towards ‘’the Family’’ undermines the legitimacy of the ruling party in the eyes of the international community. This, however, cannot in uence the further consolidation of power in the hands of ‘’the Family’’

Academic and public discourses often oversimplify the complex historical, social, and discursive forces that have created the current realities in Haiti. These discourses ignore or distort the role that foreign governments and international agencies have played and continue to play in the creation of the Haitian state. They portray the Haitian government as singular and static, corrupt and incapable, and fail to acknowledge changes in leadership and the diversity of individuals who exist within the government. This “single story” about Haiti privileges the international community and overlooks the stories from Haitians who are working to rebuild and reimagine their own country. This article examines the personal stories of Haitians in order to better understand the nature of Haitian leadership in a neocolonial, post-disaster context.
