Unexpected defects of concrete in a completed bored pile can arise during the construction stage. Therefore, post-construction testing of bored pile concrete is an important part of the design and construction process. The Cross-hole Sonic Logging (CSL) method has been the most widely used to examine the concrete quality. This method requires some access tubes pre-installed inside bored piles prior to concreting; the required quantity of access tubes has been pointed out in few literatures and also ruled in the national standard of Vietnam (TCVN 9395:2012). However, theoretical bases aiming to decide the required quantity of access tubes have not been given yet. A probability approach is proposed in this paper aiming to determine the essential quantity of access tubes, which depend not only on pile diameters, magnitude of defects, but also on the technical characteristics of CSL equipment. At the present time, in Astana city is going on works by construction public transport system LRT (Light Railway Transport). LRT is an overhead road with two railway lines. The first stage of construction is including construction of overhead road (bridge) with 22.4 km length and 18 stations. The foundation of bridge is the bored piles with cross-section of 1.0-1.5 m and length of 8-35 m. A design bearing capacity of pile is 4500-8000 kN. Chinese drilling rigs Zoomlion was used for soil boring without casing. A polymer slurry is used to maintain the walls of boreholes in sand and gravel soils. In these conditions very important point is the integrity of concrete body of each bored piles. For checking the integrity was used two methods – the Low Strain Method and the Cross-Hole Sonic Logging. The aim of this paper is finding the advantages and disadvantages of each method which applying on testing site.

A new measurement system called Crosshole Sonic Logging Tomography (CSLT) provides information on the size, shape, and orientation of defects in a bored pile. The CSLT measurement system has not (yet) been accredited in Hong Kong for foundation testing. Bored piles in Hong Kong are generally wide and deep. Existing measurement accuracy studies do not consider this large type of bored piles. The objective of this research is to quantify the measurement accuracy and precision of the CSLT method for large diameter bored piles (the most common pile type for public housing projects in Hong Kong). A test pile was constructed with known defects and perform experiments with a CSLT measurement system to quantify its accuracy and precision. CSLT is found to be accurate in detecting shape, size, and location of large defects but small defects close to the tube are difficult to detect. Generally speaking, CSLT has satisfactory accuracy and precision for practical use. The use of CSLT can be considered as a feasible method in defect diagnosis of bore piles in Hong Kong.

Quality control of bored piles is a complex operation aimed at determining possible defects in the pile shaft and the strength of the pile material made by different technologies. The presence of pile shaft defects and a decrease in the strength characteristics of the pile shaft material lead to the development of negative processes at the stage of subsequent operation of the building and structure. It is known that the bearing capacity of the pile material should not be less than the bearing capacity of the ground. Consequently, it is necessary to strictly observe the quality of the concrete of the design strength values to ensure the reliability of the designed building concerning the service life. Nowadays different methods of nondestructive testing such as pile integrity test, cross-hole sonic logging. The paper presents a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each of them, experimental data also are given

This paper described using Low Strain Method and Cross-Hole Sonic logging (CSL) for identify of integrity of bridge foundations of LRT in Astana, Kazakhstan. The CSL is a method prescribed by ASTM D6760 - 08, Standard Test Method for Integrity Testing of Concrete Deep Foundations. This method is considered to be more accurate than sonic echo testing in the determination of soundness of concrete. The sonic access tubes do not contribute to the structural capacity of the pile. The bored piles of LRT are 1.0^1.5 m of diameters and 10^55 m of lengths. Design bearing capacity of piles is more than 4500 kN. At the testing period were founded defects in foundation bodies. To check of integrity were conducted by static load tests. The CSL test is based on the length of time for an ultrasonic wave to be propagated between any two of the selected tubes. The velocity of the propagated wave depends on the material through which the wave is transmitted. The aim of this paper is to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Low Strain Method and CSL methods by analysis of field testing. For checking integrity applying two methods - Low Strain Method and Cross-Hole Sonic Logging. The aim of this paper is to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method using the examples of a real application.
