Istraživana je ishrana trlje kamenjarke, Mullus surmuletus u istočnom dijelu Jadrankog mora. Analiziran je sadržaj želudca 203 jedinke (11.5 – 32.9 cm TL) prikupljenih pridnenom povlačnom mrežom koćom. Opće su prihvaćene metode i ključevi za determinaciju korišteni za određivanje sastava ishrane i determinaciju plijena. Istraživanjem je određeno 39 identificiranih vrsta plijena koji spadaju u 11 glavnih skupina: rakovi, puževi, školjkaši, ribe, žarnjaci, bodljikaši, mnogočetinaši, oblići, mahovnjaci, alge i krednjaci. Dominantna i poželjna kategorija plijena bili su dekapodni rakovi unutar svih veličinskih kategorija, dok je samo kod najvećih jedinki pronađena dominantnost školjkaša, a slijede ih mnogočetinaši i rakovi. Najveće jedinke također su pokazale veću raznolikost u konzumaciji različitih vrsta plijena i prosječno veći broj jedinki plijena u odnosu na manje ribe. Nije pronađena značajna razlika u ishrani između mužjaka i ženki \((p>0.05)\) i s obzirom na sezonu Istraživana je ishrana trlje kamenjarke, Mullus surmuletus u istočnom dijelu Jadranskog mora. Prisutnost detritusa u probavnom traktu povezana je s načinom hranjenja istraživane vrste na muljevitim detritičnim dnima. Hranjenje širokim spektrom plijena bez značajnih varijacija u vezi sa spolom i sezonom sugerira da se trlja od kamena može prilagoditi pomacima u prostorno-vremenskim varijacijama obilja potencijalnog plijena. Prisutnost detritusa u probavnom traktu povezana je s načinom hranjenja istraživane vrste na muljevitim detritičnim dnima.

Managing mixed fisheries requires understanding fishers’ behaviour to allow predicting future fisheries distribution and impact on marine ecosystems. A new approach was developed to compare fine-scale fishing effort distribution of Eastern English Channel (EEC) bottom trawlers to the monthly and spatially resolved abundance distributions of commercial species. First, the added value of using species-specific spatial overlap metric to quantify effective fishing effort and improve the relationship between fishing effort and fishing mortality was assessed. Second, based on the Ideal Free Distribution (IFD) theory, the species-specific weights given by fishers to different species were estimated by maximizing the overlap between target species assemblage and effort distributions in October. At a seasonal scale, our results emphasized the importance of cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) and red mullet (Mullus surmuletus) for the global distribution of EEC bottom trawlers. In October, cuttlefish and red mullet were clearly more determining fishers’ location choice than historically harvested species and also than the overall expected revenue. This is likely due to external constraints such as low cod (Gadus morhua) quota, causing IFD assumptions violated. This study evidenced the importance of getting good insights into spatiotemporal distributions of stocks and fleets to understand fishers’ behaviour and improve mixed fisheries management advice.

A specimen of the red mullet (Mullus surmuletus L.), caught in Plymouth waters in October 1949, was found to have tumours projecting externally on the pectoral fins. They were spherical or elliptical in shape, the largest being 20 mm. long. On the suggestion of Mr G. A. Steven some of these outgrowths were cut out and given to the writer for microscopic examination.When examined fresh they appear to consist of small, spherical, cyst-like bodies of various diameters, but there was no obvious clue as to their nature. After fixing in Bouin and sectioning, they are seen to be composed of cells of various sizes (PI. I, figs. 1–4). It can be seen that these cells lie close to one another, leaving only a little space for the embedding connective tissue which is characterized by the abundance of its own small cells. The blood vessels met with in this tissue contain fish erythrocytes. The whole is covered by stratified squamous epithelium (PI. I, fig. 2).
