The prospective plans for designing electronic collections of rare books at the RAS Library for Natural Sciences are discussed. The efforts of designing a full-text electronic library and an electronic catalog of rare books at the RAS Library for Natural Sciences are described. The value of rare scientific books in the present world is substantiated. Several options for designing electronic collections of rare books are suggested.

This chapter attempts to unravel the journey of Sapru House library (Indian Council of World Library) from a passive manual traditional library to an active electronic library. This chapter provides insights into the traditional management of the resources and their service provision and examines the reasons for the digital initiatives and the how the challenges and obstructions were met and overridden. ICWA library is an academic library having a unique and matchless collection of bound newspapers (since1933), press clippings (since 1964) and rare books (between 1700-1900) constitute 70% of its total collection. Housing, storage, management, preservation, conservation, retrieval and dissemination were underlying reasons that inspired the author to transform this valued collection to a digital repository of knowledge. This chapter gives a detailed account of the conception of the digital initiations vis-à-vis the digital project, outlines, reports, discussions, presentations, approvals, sanctions, funding, execution, implementation and the outcome and realization of the dream.

The author reviews the e-library of the proceedings of the scientific workshop: Information Support of Science: New Technologies, hold by the RAS Library for Natural Sciences since 1985. The original computer system to support the e-library was designed by the Library specialists in 2005. The author examines the EL information foundation comprising four databases (personalia, institutions, sources, publications), and the entry structure. Today, the new version of the software has been developed, and all information accumulated in the former EL version has been converted into the new one. The new integrated computer system consists of the administration and user modules: the data are entered and edited within the former, and the latter is a special retrieval system for searching articles in the EL. The electronic library of the workshop proceedings is available free via the RAS LNS website (http://www.benran.ru/ libsem/). Search by various fields is characterized: by words in the title, by author’s name, year of publication, (author’s) institution. The queries examples are given, the navigation through bibliographic entry elements is demonstrated.

In the Geosciences, the new concept of the Anthropocene has been well established. Today, in the Humanities, it is increasingly also accepted as centrally relevant because it allows us to describe our present world in a more accurate fashion. The critical question of this study is what opportunities result from literature and literary studies in order to increase our understanding of the Anthropocene. This essay argues in favor of promoting the study of literature and of the Humanities in the search for necessary impulses that might free us from unilateral-instrumental concepts employed by the Natural Sciences as the only academic field that might be able to solve problems using exclusively technological strategies. We live in the Anthropocene now and must engage with it critically by drawing from both the Natural Sciences and the Humanities if we want to hope for a livable future here on earth.

The article aims to demonstrate the results of research and bringing to the technological implementation, in the Library for Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences (LNS RAS), of a full cycle of works, from identification of rare books in the collections, their description and scanning, to their registration in the Union Catalog and Electronic Library. The author gives a brief description of the software package developed at LNS RAS for creating the Electronic Catalog and full-text Electronic Library of Rare Publications, as well as the scheme of automated interaction of all technological departments involved in the process. The information on practical implementation and directions of the technology development is given. The article presents a brief review of the research, with the identified part of the collection of rare publications of the LNS RAS. For the first time, the Central Library of the LNS RAS implements the Union Catalog and Electronic Library of Rare Publications, reflecting not only the bibliographic information on the publications, but also the data on their specific features (author’s inscriptions, bookplates, stamps, etc.). Rare publications previously inaccessible to researchers, though already used by scientists of the RAS institutes, are introduced into scientific circulation. The article identifies and describes materials about geographical expeditions of the 18th—19th centuries and samples of Russian and foreign book printing of the 18th century. For the first time, the LNS RAS conducts research related to the history of Russian science and printing, and identifies bookplates and proprietary marks of Russian scientists, which have not previously been reflected in catalogs. This opens a new cultural layer of historical data, now available to researchers.

The first professional standing Seminar “Information Provision of Science: New Technologies” has been held regularly since 1985. It is the platform for the library personnel, information workers and programmers to discuss the questions of development of the modern computer technologies for solution of library-information problems. Collections of materials of all seminars are published in printed form and presented on the website of the Library for Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences (BEN RAS).The article considers the situation in the field of the development of computer technology, existed in the mid-1980-ies that caused the need to organize the Seminar. There are presented the results of the analysis of Seminar proceedings published in 1985—2017, allowing to trace the development of library automation in the country. There is estimated the frequency of usage in the headings of reports of different terms related to this problem, that characterizes the dynamics of changes of its main priorities. Thus, the term ECM was widely used in 1980-ies, since 1991 ceased to be used; the term “electronic library”, which appeared in the proceedings of Seminar in 1999, reached its peak use in the late 2000-s, and then became quite “usual”; now in the titles of reports it appears much less frequently.
