Marine geological survey of Ekspedisi Widya Nusantara (EWIN) LIPI 2016 was conducted by using RV Baruna Jaya VIII in the Sumba Waters from 4 to 26 August 2016. One of the aim of this survey is to understand the sea floor surface sediment characteristics and its influence to the benthic foraminifera distribution. Seven sediment samples were collected from sea floor surface in Sumba Strait, at the different location and depth using grabbing method with box corer. The samples have analyzed for the foraminifera content, sediment grain size, organic matter and carbonate content, and chemical element by XRF method. The living benthic foraminifera distribution increase to the east of the research area, which have higher content of the organic material and Fe, Rb, Zr, Zn and Sr elements in the sediment. The distribution of sediment types on the Scott Reef-Rowley Shoals platform, a marginal plateau adjoining the continental shelf of north-west Australia, has been investigated. Sediments in this region are predominately muds, with a high carbonate content. Sands, which are scarce, are mainly composed of both benthic and pelagic skeletal remains, with any gravel-sized material consisting of relict molluscan debris and, occasionally, relict coralline material. Correlation of sediment type with sea-bed characteristics as determined from photographs of the bottom at the same site showed significant relationships between mean grain size, and degree of sediment rippling and benthic activity. Similar correlations were found for the skewness measure of the analysis of sediment grain-size frequency. It is concluded that sediment type bears strong relationships with benthic activity and bedform morphology. Correlations between sediment provinces and the distribution of Australian scampi (Metanephrops sp.), a relatively new fishery in the region, are discussed.

South Makassar Strait is located between Kalimantan and Sulawesi Islands that is an important oceanographic pathway connecting between the Pacific and Indian oceans. This area is a part of sedimentary basin that has specific seabed morphology and sediment characteristics, including foraminifera as a component of sediments. The purpose of this study is to determine community structure of benthic foraminifera related to sediment characteristics. This study used 20 top core sediment samples from water depth between 200 and 1500 m. There are identified 38 species of benthic foraminifera and some of them are characterized the study area: Anomalinoides colligerus, Lenticulina suborbicularis, Planulina wuellerstorfi, , and Pseudonodosaria discrete. The diversity index is categorized as moderate values (1.0=H'= 3) and the average of evenness values is about 0.79. The dominance values are less than 0.5 indicate that there is no dominant species in the study area. In relation to sediment characteristics, it shows that the high abundance of benthic foraminifera occurs in sediment type of silty sand and sandy silt. Moderate abundance appears in sand following by low abundance in silt and sandy silt sediment types. Wilayah ini merupakan bagian dari cekungan sedimen yang mempunyai morfologi dasar laut dan karakteristik sedimen tertentu termasuk foraminifera sebagai komponen sedimen. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui struktur komunitas foraminifera bentik dalam kaitannya dengan tipe sedimen dasar laut. Penelitian ini menggunakan 20 sampel sedimen bagian atas dari pemercontoh inti pada kedalaman antara 200 dan 1500 m. Ada 38 spesies foraminifera bentik dan beberapa diantaranya mencirikan daerah penelitian: Anomalinoides colligerus, Lenticulina suborbicularis, Planulina wuellerstorfi, dan Pseudonodosaria discrete. Indeks keanekaragaman termasuk dalam kategori sedang (1,0=H’=3) dan nilai rata-rata keseragaman sekitar 0,79. Nilai dominasi lebih kecil dari 0,5 itu menandakan tidak ada spesies yang dominan pada lokasi penelitian. Terkait dengan karakteristik sedimen menunjukkan bahwa kelimpahan foraminifera bentik tinggi terdapat pada jenis sedimen pasir lanauan dan lanau pasiran. Kelimpahan sedang ditemukan pada jenis sedimen pasir diikuti kelimpahan rendah yang dijumpai pada sedimen lanau dan lanau pasiran. Remote sensing of underwater vegetation using single-beam acoustics. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 67: 594–605. A single-beam, acoustic, ground-discrimination system (QTC VIEW, Series V) was used to study the distribution of underwater macrophytes in a shallow-water coastal system, employing frequencies of 50 and 200 kHz. The study was conducted in Mar Menor, SE Spain, where the expansion of Caulerpa prolifera has contributed to the silting up of the superficial sediments. A direct relationship was identified between algal biomass and sediment-fines content. Acoustic information on sediment grain size and data on algal biomass were obtained in muddy and sandy sediments, including vegetated and non-vegetated seabed. Non-vegetated muddy areas were created by diving and handpicking the algae. The multivariate acoustic data were analysed under the null hypotheses that there were no acoustic differences between bare seabeds with contrasting superficial sediment types or among low, medium, and high algal-biomass areas, having in mind that grain size can act as a confounding factor. Both null hypotheses were rejected, and the results showed that 200 kHz was better than 50 kHz in distinguishing cover levels of algal biomass. The relationship between the 200-kHz acoustic data and algal biomass suggests utility in modelling the latter using the former.

<p>An integrated study of sediment distribution was conducted in Weda Bay, Northern Maluku to provide general information on transportation and deposition process based on sediment grain size distribution. The study was conducted during the Weda Bay Expedition using the “Baruna Jaya VII” research vessel in March 13<sup>th</sup> –22<sup>th</sup> 2013. Sieving method (granulometric) was used to analyze the grain size. The results indicated that in general the pattern of sea floor sediment distribution was dominated by clay – sand grain-sized. The current speed influenced the sediment transport, deposition, and distribution.  Larger fractions of sediment were quickly settled on the sea floor due to stronger currents around Southern area (Widi islands), meanwhile the lesser fractions of the transported away into other places with weaker currents conditions.</p> <p>Keywords: current, the Weda Bay expedition, granulometric, grain size, sediment distribution</p>

The relationship between recent benthic foraminifera and bottom currents in the Panama basin (Colombian Pacific) is examined, and the main ecological variables which control the distribution of benthic foraminifera are discussed. The benthic foraminiferal study of 24 core top samples and the integration with previous reports, support the view that in upwelling areas or under high terrigenous influx, the assemblages are dominated by infaunal forms such as Uvigerina, Bolivina, Globobulimina, and Chilostomella, beside common forms such as Uvigerina peregrina Cushman and Epistominella spp., which are indicative of high productivity. In contrast, epifaunal forms such as Cibicidoides, Laticarinina, and Hoeglundina are more common on the flanks of the Cocos and Carnegie Ridges indicating a lower surface productivity and a larger content of dissolved oxygen on the sea floor. Infaunal foraminifera are dominated by Siphouvigerina proboscidea (Schwager). In addition, several proxy taxa of the intensity of deep sea currents were detected in the analyzed assemblages. From these taxa, Cibicides wuellerstorfi (Schwager) has the best proxy potential for the reconstruction of intense bottom currents in sediments from the Cocos and Carnegie Ridges for the Holocene.

Abstract Benthic foraminifera of recent salt marsh environments are often dominated by species with an agglutinated test. The grains used for test construction by these foraminifera are collected from their surrounding environment. In this study we investigate the role of sediment grain size and mineralogical composition for richness, population density and taxonomic composition of agglutinating foraminifera. Foraminifera from 15 stations of the tidal marsh of the Canche estuary (Pas-de-Calais, France) were studied. The species richness depends on the grain size of the sediment, whereas the density is not related to sediment grain size. The distribution of foraminifera species throughout the tidal marsh may depend on many environmental parameters such as OM as well as tidal elevation, already largely discussed in literature. The mineralogical composition of the agglutinated grains in Trochammina inflata and Arenoparrella mexicana is very different from that of sediment; the composition of Jadammina macrescens is generally different from that of the sediment with some exceptions, and in Miliammina fusca, Paratrochammina haynesi and Remaneica plicata the mineralogical compositions are similar to those of the sediment. The studied species may be able to select their preferred grains based upon composition even if a particular mineral is scarce in the sediment.
