Considering the technological development, and particularly the global pandemic of COVID-19, it is essential to align universities and companies as agents in the transformation of society. However, a portion of academic research results does not find application in the productive sector. To better understand such (dis)connection, this study aims to verify in the scientific literature the critical success factors proper to the collaboration between universities and companies. Therefore, a bibliographic survey was carried out in the Scopus and Web of Science databases, considering the period 2000-2020 as temporality. From a quantitative point of view, a bibliometric analysis is presented regarding the year of publication, origin, thematic categories, authorship and co-citation networks, and with a qualitative character, through content analysis, critical factors were identified, with emphasis on trust, commitment, assumption of risks, realistic and well-defined objectives, managerial engagement of project coordinators, university reputation, previous experience in collaboration, communication and organizational culture.

There is often a gap between the creation of knowledge and the use of new knowledge in the economy, a situation which has pushed many governments to establish programmes for knowledge transfer and new-firm formation. I examine the initiatives taken by the government in the Netherlands to advance new-firm formation in biotechnology. Drawing on experience in entrepreneurship—its institutional setting in general, and more specifically on developments in biotechnology start-ups—I aim to identify critical success factors for this policy. The policy seems promising in covering all development stages of start-up firms and in using a network approach—with implementation by an intermediary organisation as a solution for coordination problems. The low popularity of entrepreneurship, including some negative regulatory factors in biotechnology, and the danger of the policy focusing on the top innovative start-ups are threats to success. Other threats may be a fragmentation of ferees and a narrow focus on a national situation rather than cooperation with adjacent countries. I suggest a number of critical success factors that can be used in policies to enhance new-firm formation in biotechnology, and indicate some lines for further research.

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution implementation is a complex process, that requires substantial resources and efforts, and yet the results are very uncertain. The ERP hype has already reached SMEs, so the authors have examined the strategies, methods and critical success factors from SMEs point of view. The results of our survey in SMEs in Slovenia have shown that SMEs have to pay attention to different critical success factors in different phases of the implementation process. Moreover, there are differences in implementation process as opposed to large companies. Case studies of two SMEs have shown similar results. Recommendations for future SME implementations and comments of our findings can be found in conclusion.

For the past decade, the Tanzanian government has started implementing m-government initiatives. However, little is known about the factors surrounding m-government adoption in Tanzania. Consequently, some m-government services have been successfully adopted while others are still struggling (having a low level of adoption). In this chapter, the authors investigate critical success factors (CSFs) that favor the adoption of m-government services from a web analytics point of view. The results show that inspecting the web analytics data from multiple viewpoints and varying levels of detail, gives insights on the CSFs towards the adoption of m-government services. The findings suggest that perceived usefulness, user needs, and usability favor the adoption of one m-government service over the other. Moreover, factors like the loading time of the service, the number of requests, and bounce rate seem not to have an effect.

Science and Technology Parks (STPs) are of great importance in the business context of the region in which they carry out their activity. They are one of the main mechanisms of public and private initiatives for the promotion of research, development and innovation and transfer of technology. The main purpose of this type of institution is not a purely economic but also sociocultural benefit, which makes them an adequate investment from the point of view of public institutions. They promote the creation of companies and agreements with universities and research centers, generate jobs and attract technology-based companies. Therefore, they require a detailed assessment to understand their operation and generate action plans and models that new parks or those that are still in the early stages of growth may follow. Thus, this study focuses on identifying the main Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for STPs from a literature review and evaluating the importance of the main variables that appear in the literature on the advancement of STPs to group them according to its operational characteristics.
