The construction industry faces many challenges with problems related to construction waste as it takes up time and effort without adding value to clients. A concept in project management, namely lean construction, has the main focus of minimizing waste and providing added value to a construction project. The purpose of this study was to know the existence of non-physical waste, its causative factors, and how lean construction can be implemented to minimize non-physical waste in earthworks, foundations and basement 2 of the Sanggala Hotel and Office Building Project. The study was carried out by observation, document study, and questionnaires to identify non-physical waste. This study showed that the non-physical waste that most often occurs in related project was equipment breakdown frequently with a weight of 0.086. Meanwhile, the non-physical waste variable that has the greatest impact on causing time overrun on the project was delayed schedule with a weight of 0.080. Equipment breakdown frequently is influenced dominantly by the equipment shortage. Delayed schedule is influenced dominantly by licensing problems. In general, lean construction approaches such as Construction Meetings, Preventive And Predictive Maintenance, and Fail-Safe For Quality And Safety can be applied by contractors to minimize non-physical waste that was dominant in the project. Waste in the construction industry has been the theme of several research projects around the world in recent years. Researchers implement different methods to reduce the amount of waste in the construction industry. In the construction industry, contractors only consider physical waste which leads the project to cost overruns. i.e. material waste. Construction industry is also affected by time overrun. Impact of time overrun on the construction projects is considerably high and requires special attention in addition to physical waste. In the present study, construction waste is categorized in mainly of two types: value added waste and non-value added waste. This categorization includes both-material waste as well as time waste, which are main causes of occurrence of waste. A case study was also carried out at a residential building project in Ahmedabad, Gujarat to get the idea about the percentage of waste occurs in a construction project.

Construction industry suffers numerous issues and complicated factors like price, period, quality and safety. It is said that Construction projects are versatile because they associate with contractors, architects, advisers, designers, the project owners, etc. Keeping in view of above factors, objective of this research is to highlight those factors which have impact on labor productivity in house building project. Through literature review as well as discussion with different consultants, several factors of productivity were identified. Out of which 20 factors were selected, which were later categorized into two sets, for analyzing in the current study. A comprehensive questionnaire was prepared and sent to project manager, engineers, designers, and builders. It was found, that total expense of construction comes to much higher as it was originally calculated. It is suggested that human resource should be developed through an effective and well planned training program, so that construction project do not suffer due to low performance. The mentioned factors are supposed to help in completed the construction projects effectively.  


The construction industry is the most important factor to develop a powerful impact in economic growth all over the world. In construction, there are several activities which create a waste. Those activities will not increase the profit of the whole projects. So, the lean construction tools can reduce the construction waste at any stages of project. Reducing the wastage will improve the project execution, provide value for customers and positive results on the national economy.
