Introduction. The importance of memory is not restricted to remembering the knowledge and experiences of the past retrospective memory (RM), but also to remember what an individual must accomplish in the future prospective memory (PM). Objectives. The aim of this study was to identify RM and PM levels in students with learning disabilities (LD) according to some variables (gender, grade) and to identify the differences between the two types of memories. Methods. The study followed the comparative descriptive statistics. The study sample consisted of 37 male and female students with LD in middle school. The Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PRMQ) was used in this study. Results. The results include the following: a statistically significant decrease from the average in PM and RM levels in students with LD, the existence of statistically significant differences between PM and RM in students with LD for the RM, the presence of statistically significant differences in the PM and RM according to the gender variable for females, and the presence of statistically significant differences in PM and RM according to the grade variable for the third grade of middle school. Conclusion. Students with LD may suffer from a decrease in their capacity to remember in the future, which causes many difficulties in daily life. We guide teachers to use external AIDS for students with LD (such as writing notes) to help students remember performing their tasks.

A small independent high school in the Canadian West is using the affordances of the virtual world of Second Life to explore and reconstruct the colonial past of their students: marginalized urban Indigenous youth. The affordances of the virtual world make it possible to reconstruct the past, deconstruct the present and create a possible hope-filled future. This process is underpinned by pedagogies of engagement and emancipation on three virtual islands (sims) in the virtual world. The past was reconstructed and can be deconstructed on the Negan Tapeh sim. Negan Tapeh is a Cree phrase meaning “look to the future.” When the activities and quests associated with exploring and understanding the events of the past and their impact on the present are complete, participants are transported to the virtual present on the Boyle Street sim.Boyle Street is an inner-city area in Edmonton, Alberta, where most of the youth live or gravitate to. In Canada and the United States, inner city areas have historically been synonymous with depressed and run-down parts of the city where petty crime, violence and substance abuse are woven into the fabric of daily life. On Boyle Street, the youth are tasked with completing assignments (quests or hunts) distributed by teachers (scripted agents) in the sim’s Boyle Street High School. When the three quests are completed, participants receive their key to the future. The future unfolds on the third sim Urban Hope.This paper underlines the importance of the virtual world in educational projects with marginalized youth.

We rely on prospective memory (PM) to carry out intended actions at an appropriate time in the future. This ability is very important for day-to-day functioning, for example, remembering to take medication, attend appointments and pay bills. The literature covering the topic of PM has increased exponentially in the past 20–30 years. This paper will describe this relatively novel form of memory and discuss the debilitating effect PM deficits have on everyday living. It will also examine the populations who experience significantly more frequent and severe PM impairments and explore the causes and mechanisms of PM impairments by reviewing behavioural, clinical, genetic and neuroimaging studies. The paper will conclude by discussing the latest research into ways of treating PM impairments in clinical populations. Where applicable, examples of research conducted by the author and his colleagues will be used to illustrate these topics.
