ABSTRACT In arid and semi-arid regions, the quality of irrigation water varies in geographic terms and during the year, and the occurrence of water with high concentrations of salts is common. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the emergence, growth and production of sesame, cultivar CNPA G3, irrigated with saline water and fertilized with N of different carrier proportions by the ratio of nitrate and ammonium ( NO --N and NH +-N) in an experiment conducted in lysimeters arranged in a greenhouse in the municipality of Campina Grande-PB, Brazil. The treatments were distributed into randomized blocks using a 5 × 5 factorial scheme relative to levels of irrigation water salinity (ECw; 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4 and 3.0 dS m-1) and five proportions of NO3 -N/NH4 -N (200/0; 150/50; 100/100; 50/150 and 0/200 mg of N kg-1), with three replicates. The increase in ECw compromised the emergence, growth and production of sesame, cultivar CNPA G3, and the production components were the most sensitive variables. The highest growth in diameter was obtained with the proportion of 200/0 mg kg -1 of NO3 -N/NH4 -N. An ECw level of 3.0 dS m and fertilization with 0/200 mg kg of NO3 -N/NH4 -N promoted deleterious effects on the total mass of sesame fruits and mass of seeds. The interaction between water salinity levels and NO3-/NH4 proportions significantly affected the number of leaves (at 50 and 70 days after sowing), the total mass of fruits and the mass of seeds.

Palavras-chave: solanáceas, uso de águas salinas, potássio, cálcio  PAIVA, F. PQUALITY OF TOMATO AS FUNCTION OF IRRIGATION WATER SALINITY AND K/CA RATIO IN FERTIGATION  2 ABSTRACT The quality of tomato is directly related to the quality of the water used in irrigation and to the adequate supply of nutrients, mainly potassium and calcium. The objective of this work was to evaluate the quality of tomatoes as a function of the different ionic ratios of potassium and calcium (K+/ Ca2+), with: F1 = 1.5:1; F2 = 1.25:1; F3 = 1: 1; F4 = 1:1.25 and F5 = 1:1.5 and four irrigation water salinity levels (S1-0.5, S2-2.0, S3-3.5 and S4-5.0 dS m-1). The experimental design was a randomized complete block design in a 5 x 4 factorial scheme, totaling 20 treatments, with four replications. The K+/Ca2+ ratio = 1:1 corresponds to the concentration of these nutrients recommended for cultivation in a hydroponic tomato crop. The variables related to fruit quality (soluble solids, Vitamin C, titratable acidity, pH and AT / SS ratio) were evaluated. The use of water with salinity between 2.0 and 3.5 dS m-1 increases tomato quality by increasing the SS/AT ratio. Fertigation with higher concentrations of K favor fruit quality at salinity up to 3.5 dS m-1, but do not affect tomato quality at 5.0 dS m-1 salinity. Keywords: solanaceae, use of salt water, potassium, calcium

Salinity is a major problem affecting agriculture in many regions of the world, including Morocco. The best agronomic practices such as fertilization are used to cope with salinity stress and improve productivity under saline conditions. The objective of this study is to evaluate the interactive effect of phosphorus and salinity on sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) cv. “Sporta” productivity and quality. A field experiment was carried out, testing three levels of irrigation water salinity (ECw = 0.7; 4, 8, and 12 dS·m−1) and three levels of phosphorus (100, 120, and 140 kg P2O5·ha−1) organized in a split-plot design with three replicates. This research was conducted in the Tadla region (center of Morocco) during two seasons in 2019 and 2020. The obtained results show that irrigation water salinity had a negative effect on most growth and productivity parameters. For instance, sugar beet yield reduced by 21% and by 26% under saline irrigation, with an EC value equal to 4 and 8 dS·m−1, respectively, compared to the control during the 2018-2019 season, and by 1%, 19%, and 27% under saline irrigation, with an EC value equal to 4 and 8 and 12 dS·m−1, respectively compared to the control (0.7 dS·m−1) during the 2019-2020 season. Total sugar content was significantly increased by 5% and 7%, respectively, under saline irrigation, with an EC value of 4 and 8 dS·m−1, respectively, as compared with the control in the first growing season in 2018-2019. However, in the second growing season (2019-2020), only the highest level of saline water (EC = 12 dS·m−1) significantly increased in sugar content by 15% compared to the control. Regarding the P fertilization effect, it was found that a P rate of 120 kg P2O5·ha−1 was enough to improve the yield and sugar content of sugar beet under the tested salinity levels. Thus, P fertilization could be one of the best practices to enhance sugar beets’ tolerance of salinity. To obtain a maximum root and sugar yield under saline water, it is recommended to apply a phosphorus dose of 120 kg P2O5·ha−1.
