Highly sensitive broadband photothermal spectroscopy with a white-light lamp as the excitation source was developed by combining a Sagnac interferometer and balanced detection with a photothermal deflection method. A probe beam was split by a birefringent crystal CaCO3 into signal and reference beams with a balanced intensity. This balanced detection enabled the measurement of photoexcited thermal relaxation spectra of materials in the air over the whole visible range in the weak excitation limit 50 µW/cm2. The photothermal excitation spectrum of Eu2+-doped CaAlSiN3 phosphors (CASN:Eu2+) with a high luminescent quantum efficiency was measured to be distinctly different from the photoluminescence excitation spectrum which reflects the absorption spectrum, revealing the thermal relaxation mechanism of the phosphor. Assuming a typical non-radiative relaxation from the higher excited states to the lowest excited state and successively to the ground state, it is demonstrated that the photoluminescence efficiency of the phosphors is readily evaluated simply by comparing the photothermal and photoluminescence excitation spectra.

Abstract The Martian polar atmosphere is known to have a persistent local minimum in potential vorticity (PV) near the winter pole, with a region of high PV encircling it. This finding is surprising, since an isolated band of PV is barotropically unstable, a result going back to Rayleigh. Here the stability of a Mars-like annular vortex is investigated using numerical integrations of the rotating shallow-water equations. The mode of instability and its growth rate is shown to depend upon the latitude and width of the annulus. By introducing thermal relaxation toward an annular equilibrium profile with a time scale similar to that of the instability, a persistent annular vortex with similar characteristics as that observed in the Martian atmosphere can be simulated. This time scale, typically 0.5–2 sols, is similar to radiative relaxation time scales for Mars’s polar atmosphere. The persistence of an annular vortex is also shown to be robust to topographic forcing, as long as it is below a certain amplitude. It is therefore proposed that the persistence of this barotropically unstable annular vortex is permitted owing to the combination of short radiative relaxation time scales and relatively weak topographic forcing in the Martian polar atmosphere.

The resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization method has been applied to the study of NO-Ar van der Waals complex in the nsσ (n = 3,4) Rydberg states. We have assigned the intermolecular vibrations appearing in the ×X˜ excitation spectrum of the complex. The bending structure appeared only with the excitation of the stretching mode in the à state, which was interpreted by intermolecular forces. The E˜-à excitation spectra were independent of the initial intermolecular level in the à state and the dissociation threshold to NO(E2∑+ ) + Ar was determined to be 60950 cm-1. The s–d mixing in the 4sσ orbital would make the intermolecular vibrational structure in the E˜—Ãspectra complex.
