Durability, safety, and usability are the three foundations of structural reliability, vital in the economic and social context. As the locating and tracking of potential damage and evaluating its impact on the condition of the structure are part of service life assessment, relevant methods should be developed that would detect the onset of the deterioration process and enable the monitoring of its progress within the entire volume of the structure, not only in the areas selected in a subjective way. The acoustic emission (AE) method relying on the analysis of active destructive processes can be the best choice. This article reports the results of the application of the AE method for identifying active destructive processes and tracking their development during the routine operation of various types of structures.

The paper reports results of the study on the possibility of using the acoustic emission method in diagnosing fatigue and corrosion damage in steel elements of the cable way support towers. The assessment of the sensitivity of the structure to the recorded destructive processes is based on the structural damage classification method using the patterns created as a result of statistical and mathematical processing of acoustic emission signals through image analysis and grouping methods.

Durability, reliability and usability are three foundations of reliable construction, crucial in economic and social context. Because localization and monitor of potential defect and assessment of its impact on condition of the construction are part of the durability assessment, we should develop appropriate methods, which would detect the beginning of technical condition process getting worse and could allow monitoring its progress during exploitation of the construction, not only at areas chosen subjectively or based on unverifiable computer models. One of this NDT methods complied with user expectations is acoustic emission method based on analysis of active destruction processes. The article presents results of AE applications to locate, monitor and identify destruction processes caused by exploitation burdens made to assessment the technical condition of gas infrastructure made from cast iron, steel and plastic.

The article presents the results of tests using the acoustic emission method during the formation process of T-27 prestressed concrete beams. The studies included two stages. The first – testing the compressive strength of the cubic samples taken from the trial batch used for the production of beams together with the acquisition of acoustic emission signals. The second – measurements by acoustic emission, on the actual construction element during accelerated maturation of concrete caused by heating. The undertaking of the above subject results from the fact that this issue is of great importance when assessing the durability of reinforced concrete and pre-compressed elements in the aspect of the analysis of these structures in terms of durability. The impact of material degradation on the durability of the structure is difficult to appraise due to the lack of reliable results needed to estimate the durability of the selected statistical approach. However, the use of the acoustic emission method based on the identification of destructive processes creates the possibility of locating, identifying and monitoring the emerging and developing destructive processes affecting the durability of concrete elements.
