This study investigated, using validated computational fluid dynamics techniques, the actual performance of portable air purifiers for reducing the infection risks of airborne respiratory diseases such as COVID-19, by properly installing air purifiers in complicated large public spaces of primary concern, such as restaurants and ballrooms. The research results reveal that portable air purifiers with HEPA filtration provide an effective solution to help mitigate virus-carrying particles/droplets in large spaces where the central air conditioning system with HEPA filtration may not provide adequate dilution and/or effective ventilation. Deploying portable air purifier changes the local flow directions, and thus, reduces the cross-table airflows that may enhance the possibility of cross-infection. A field experiment was further conducted in a restaurant and a ballroom to verify the on-site performance. This study indicates that each space is unique in furniture, occupant and system layouts and capacities, and thus, requires individualized investigation of appropriate purifier number, capacities, and locations. Flexible solutions such as portable air purifiers are important and low-cost supplements to more elaborate solutions installed in central air systems.

An example of a central air-conditioning project of a rebuilt department store is described in this paper. The design of air system, water system, layout and operations for the air conditioning system is presented in this paper. The system is different form ordinary ones because the floor height is lower; so many special considerations must be taken during the design. In addition, the low cost and easy maintenance place an important role in the design. The operational result of the design is promising and it can be referenced by other designers.

With the characteristics of non-stationarity, non-linearity, time-lag of refrigeration/ heating supplying in minds, load forecasting of central air-conditioning system is carried using time sequence analysis method. Firstly, acquisition sample data of central air-conditioning system is pretreated, and random time sequence AR model of system is formulated. Then, forecasting of AR refrigeration/heating load based on Yule-walker method is conducted. In order to enhance forecasting accuracy, crossover forecasting is introduced into the load forecasting, that is, to use vertical forecasting to follow household demands for load and horizontal forecasting to track changes of weather. Then, weight cross is made to vertical and horizontal forecasting results. Finally, refrigeration/heating load forecasting software of central air-conditioning system is developed, which is used in energy-saving monitoring and control of central air-conditioning system.

Due to energy reserves reduces gradually and uneven distribution, all countries pay more and more attention to energy saving and improve the effective utilization of energy, China also attaches great important to this. Energy saving of buildings is a necessary development trend. Air conditioning system as a large important part of building energy consumption has a huge energy-saving potential. This article mainly introduced the related strategies of energy saving in central air conditioning water system from the following three points of view: the water treatment, the cooling tower, and the variable frequency pump.
