The effect of ultrasound on the degradation of the dye Acid Brown 83 by seven different degradation methods (blank test using only ultrasound, hydrogen peroxide in a neutral medium, hydrogen peroxide in a sulfuric acid medium and hydrogen peroxide in a sulfuric acid medium in the presence of Fe(II), both without and with ultrasonic irradiation) is studied in this paper. The effectiveness of these methods is compared by analyzing the degradation percentages of the dye and its initial degradation rate. The application of ultrasound leads to a significant increase in the efficiency of any of the degradation method studied. Kinetic study of Acid Brown 83 degradation by the above-mentioned methods is carried out by using four kinetic models (first order, second order, Behnajady and pseudo-first order). The pseudo-first order model is the one that best fits the experimental data in all the used degradation methods. Although when the degradation is performed in the presence of Fe(II), the Behnajady model presents correlation coefficients slightly higher than those of the pseudo-first order, the maximum experimental conversions obtained fit much better in all cases to the pseudo first order model.

Abstract This work investigated the efficiency of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as support material for TiO2 films in the photocatalytic degradation of red Bordeaux and yellow tartrazine dyes. The optimum operating conditions were determined by a factorial design, which resulted after 180 min of treatment in degradations of 99.5% and 99.1% for the UVC/H2O2/TiO2Sup and solar/H2O2/TiO2Sup systems, respectively. For the kinetic study, the experimental data fitted to the pseudo-first-order model and the calculated kinetic constants (k) values were 0.03 min−1 for the UVC/H2O2/TiO2Sup system and 0.0213 min−1 for the system solar/H2O2/TiO2Sup. It was verified that TiO2 supported in the PET remained with high degradation efficiency even after five cycles of reuse, indicating a good stability of the photocatalyst in the support. A significant reduction of TOC content was also observed along the reaction time. The phytotoxicity bioassay with Lactuca sativa demonstrated that after treatment with UVC/H2O2/TiO2Sup and solar/H2O2/TiO2SUP, an increase in IC50 and consequently lower toxicity was observed.

The reaction of Ce3+ with BrO2 in sulfuric acid solution (which is the starting step in the inorganic reaction subset of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky-reaction) is followed spectroscopically in a reaction mixture containing BrO2 at constant concentration. From first order kinetics (Br02 in excess) the rate constant for this reaction is evaluated.

For a chemical reactor with constant volume feed rate equations have been derived which describe the time dependences of concentration of the reaction components, and their approximation has been suggested. The applicability of the approximation has been verified on a model redox system Ce(IV)/V(IV) in sulfuric acid medium.
