The organic ligand (1-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)methanol (HL) was used to react with CoX2·6H2O (X = Cl and Br) under solvothermal conditions to obtain the complex [Co4(L)6(X)2] (1, X = Cl; 2, X = Br). The butterfly-shaped structure of complex 1 and 2 suggest that Co(II) ions have two different coordinated modes, which are five coordination with O3NX environment and six coordination with O4N2 environment. In addition, the electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analysis indicated that the ion molecular fragment of highest intensity was [Co4(L)6]2+, and there existed a high nuclear fragment peak of [Co7(L)12]2+. Interestingly, it was basically completely transformed into [Co7(L)12]2+ two days later, so those two complexes were relatively stable in CH3OH. Magnetic characterization exhibited that complex 1 and 2 display field-induced single-molecule magnetic behavior, of which the energy hills Ueff/kB were 28 and 20 K under direct-current field of 0.1 T, respectively.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) is increasingly used in a broad range of research due to its ability to visualize the spatial distribution of metabolites in vivo. Here, we have developed a method, named thoracic Mass Spectrometry Imaging (tMSI), as a standard protocol of molecular imaging of whole-animal sectioning in various settings of mice in vivo. Further application of the strategy that involved the systemic administration of dexamethasone (DEX) in mice, enabled a dynamic shift in the energy status of multiple thoracic organs to be visualized, based on tMSI data of purine and pyrimidine metabolites. Furthermore, with the introduction of uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP) for tMSI data, metabolic profiles normally localized in the cortex and cortico-medullary junction (CMJ) of the thymus were drastically shifted as minor profiles into the medulla of DEX-treated thymus. As a massive apoptotic cell death in the thymic cortex was noticeable, a single molecule, which was upregulated in the cortex of the thymus, enabled us to predict ongoing immunosuppression by in vivo DEX-administration.

The organization of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) on surfaces is a mainstream research path in molecular magnetism. Of special importance is the control of grafting geometry in chemisorbed monolayers on metal surfaces. We herein present the synthesis, solid-state structure, and magnetic characterization of propeller-like tetrairon(III) SMMs containing the shortest-reported tethering groups for gold surfaces. Functionalization of molecular structure is attained using 2-R-2-(hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3-diol tripodal proligands (H3LR). The R substituents comprise a monomethylene spacer and three different terminations known to act as stable precursors of S-Au bonds (R = CH2SCN, CH2SAc and CH2SSnBu). These chemical groups are shown to be chemically compatible with the tetrairon(III) core and to afford fully-functional SMMs in crystalline form and in fair to excellent yields.
