State-of-charge (SOC) is one of the most critical parameters in battery management systems (BMSs). SOC is defined as the percentage of the remaining charge inside a battery to the full charge, and thus ranges from 0% to 100%. This percentage value provides important information to manufacturers about the performance of the battery and can help end-users identify when the battery must be recharged. Inaccurate estimation of the battery SOC may cause over-charge or over-discharge events with significant implications for system safety and reliability. Therefore, it is crucial to develop methods for improving the estimation accuracy of battery SOC. This paper presents an electrochemical model for lithium-ion battery SOC estimation involving the battery’s internal physical and chemical properties such as lithium concentrations. To solve the computationally complex solid-phase diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs) in the model, an efficient method based on projection with optimized basis functions is presented. Then, a novel moving-window filtering (MWF) algorithm is developed to improve the convergence rate of the state filters. The results show that the developed electrochemical model generates 20 times fewer equations compared with finite difference-based methods without losing accuracy. In addition, the proposed projection-based solution method is three times more efficient than the conventional state filtering methods such as Kalman filter.

The state of charge estimation is an important part of the battery management system, the estimation accuracy of which seriously affects the working performance of the lithium ion battery pack. The unscented Kalman filter algorithm has been developed and applied to the iterative calculation process. When it is used to estimate the SOC value, there is a rounding error in the numerical calculation. When the sigma point is sampled in the next round, an imaginary number appears, resulting in the estimation failure. In order to improve the estimation accuracy, an improved adaptive square root - unscented Kalman filter method is introduced which combines the QR decomposition in the calculation process. Meanwhile, an adaptive noise covariance matching method is implied. Experiments show that the proposed method can guarantee the semi-positive and numerical stability of the state covariance, and the estimation accuracy can reach the third-order precision. The error remains about 1.60% under the condition of drastic voltage and current changes. The conclusion of this experiment can provide a theoretical basis of the state of charge estimation in the battery management of the lithium ion battery pack.

The state of charge (SOC) plays an important role in battery management systems (BMS). However, SOC cannot be measured directly and an accurate state estimation is difficult to obtain due to the nonlinear battery characteristics. In this paper, a method of SOC estimation with parameter updating by using the dual square root cubature Kalman filter (DSRCKF) is proposed. The proposed method has been validated experimentally and the results are compared with dual extended Kalman filter (DEKF) and dual square root unscented Kalman filter (DSRUKF) methods. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method has the most balance performance among them in terms of the SOC estimation accuracy, execution time, and convergence rate.

As the core component of electric vehicle, lithium-ion battery needs to adopt effective battery management method to prolong battery life and improve the reliability and safety. The accurate estimation of the battery SOC can be used to prevent the battery over charge and over discharge, reduce damage to the battery and improve battery performance, which plays a vital role in the battery management system. The study of battery SOC estimation mainly focused on the battery model construction and SOC estimation algorithm. Aiming at the problem that the state of charge (SOC) of electric vehicle is difficult to be accurately estimated under complex operating conditions, based on the parameter identification of the equivalent circuit of a ternary polymer lithium-ion battery, an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm was used to estimate the SOC of the ternary polymer lithium-ion battery. Simulation and experimental results show that the estimation of SOC can be carried out by using the EKF algorithm under the conditions of China Passenger Car Condition (Chinacar) and new European driving cycle (NEDC) Compared with the coulomb counting method, the average error of SOC estimation can be realized is 1.042% and 1.138% respectively, the maximum error within 4%. Application of this algorithm to achieve SOC estimation has good robustness and convergence

Abstract The state of charge (SoC) of the battery is a typical characterization of the operating state of the battery and criterion for the battery management system (BMS) control strategy, which must be evaluated precisely. The establishment of an accurate algorithm of SoC estimation is of great significance for BMS, which can help the driver judge the endurance mileage of electric vehicle (EV) correctly. In this paper, a second-order resistor-capacity (RC) equivalent circuit model is selected to characterize the electrical characteristics based on the electrochemical model of the LiFePO4/graphene (LFP/G) hybrid cathode lithium-ion battery. Moreover, seven open circuit voltage (OCV) models are compared and the best one of them is used to simulate the dynamic characteristics of the battery. It is worth mentioning that an improved test method is proposed, which is combined with least square for parameters identification. In addition, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm is selected to estimate the SoC during the charging and discharging processes. The simulation results show that the EKF algorithm has the higher accuracy and rapidity than the KF algorithm.

This paper deals with the state of charge (SOC) estimation of lithium-ion battery (LIB) in electric vehicles (EVs). In order to accurately describe the dynamic behavior of the battery, a fractional 2nd-order RC model of the battery pack is established. The factional-order battery state equations are characterized by the continuous frequency distributed model. Then, in order to ensure the effective function of nonlinear function, Lipschitz condition and unilateral Lipschitz condition are proposed to solve the problem of nonlinear output equation in the process of observer design. Next, the linear matrix (LMIS) inequality based on Lyapunov’s stability theory and H∞ method is presented as a description of the design criteria for non-fragile observer. Compared with the existing literature that adopts observers, the proposed method takes the advantages of fractional-order systems in modeling accuracy, the robustness of H∞ method in restricting the unknown variables, and the non-fragile property for tolerating slow drifts on observer gain. Finally, The LiCoO2 LIB module is utilized to verify the effectiveness of the proposed observer method in different operation conditions. Experimental results show that the maximum estimation accuracy of the proposed non-fragile observer under three different dynamic conditions is less than 2%.
