This article describes an aging study of a foam-vacuum insulation panel (VIP) composite insulation board installed on a test wall in a natural exposure test facility through a 30-month period. Silica-based VIPs with a polymeric barrier film were used in this study. The study results showed the effectiveness of a VIP-based insulation to reduce the heat gains and losses through a wall compared to regular rigid foam insulation of the same thickness. However, the long-term performance monitoring indicated a gradual decline in the thermal performance of the foam-VIP composite. In addition, one-dimensional numerical models were created to simulate the in situ behavior of the foam-VIP composite. One model utilized constant thermal conductivities of the test wall components and another utilized temperature-dependent thermal conductivities; the latter used measurements of conductivity over temperatures ranging from −15 to 55 °C. The results of the simulations emphasized the need to use both temperature and time-dependent material properties for accurately predicting the long-term performance of VIP-based insulation systems.

To ensure structural sustainability, it is necessary to conduct steel bridge long-term performance study, including bridge design, evaluation, maintenance, and reinforcement technology. The research on steel bridge long-term performance is introduced in four aspects: (1) fatigue performance experimental study for full-scale orthotropic steel bridge decks in laboratory to study its fatigue failure mechanism, in order to improve fatigue design methodology and find rational reinforcement and maintenance method; (2) conducting steel bridge out-of-plane distortion-induced fatigue performance study, and developing cold reinforcement method; (3) performance study for base material and typical joint under long-term vehicle and environmental effect in aging steel bridges, and safety assessment and maintenance of existing steel bridge; (4) temperature gradient monitoring for steel box girder model to build the temperature design mode. Meantime, in-situ tests and monitoring are conducted for steel bridge long-term performance detection, assessment, and maintenance. The study results in this article build the research framework of steel bridge long-term performance preliminarily, which is the basis for steel bridge sustainable design, maintenance, and cold reinforcement methodology system.

A web-based data management system is described that is being used for long-term performance monitoring and stewardship of a low-level radioactive waste disposal facility (LLRWDF) at the Fernald Closure Project (FCP) in Fernald, Ohio, USA. The system provides integrated data collection and management for monitoring performance of the liner and cover systems in the LLRWDF. Integrated performance monitoring data (meteorological, hydrological, geophysical, ecological, leachate flow, and leachate quality data) are presented and compared with performance criteria and action levels in near real-time. A status summary is also included for the site manager, regulators, and other stakeholders to provide an early warning regarding the need for corrective action.

Performance analysis of a low power rating and partially loaded industrial gas turbine engine (GTE) was carried out by using a model-free data analytic approach. By adopting an efficient input selection method, several performance indices (PI) are proposed to quantify the performance of the GTE. These indices are extracted using engine operating data related to power output and parameters related to fuel consumption, and validated with engine performance monitoring measurements for a three year period corresponding to one time between overhaul intervals. The dependency of the PIs on ambient temperature has been studied by using linear and polynomial fitting curves. Then novel methods are introduced for analysis of short-term and long-term performance deterioration arising from compressor fouling and structural degradation respectively. The results have clearly shown the ability of the proposed PIs to detect short-term compressor fouling as well as long-term performance deterioration, which is directly relevant to the Prognostics and Health Management of gas turbine engine.
