The expected growth of the number of electric vehicles can be challenging for planning and operating power systems. In this sense, distribution networks are considered the Achilles’ heel of the process of adapting current power systems for a high presence of electric vehicles. This paper aims at deciding the maximum number of three-phase high-power charging points that can be installed in a low-voltage residential distribution grid. In order to increase the number of installed charging points, a mixed-integer formulation is proposed to model the provision of decentralized voltage support by electric vehicle chargers. This formulation is afterwards integrated into a modified AC optimal power flow formulation to characterize the steady-state operation of the distribution network during a given planning horizon. The performance of the proposed formulations have been tested in a case study based on the distribution network of La Graciosa island in Spain.

The use of photovoltaic reactive power and energy storage active power can solve the problems of voltage violation, network loss, and three-phase unbalance caused by photovoltaic connection to low-voltage distribution networks. However, the three-phase four-wire structure of the low-voltage distribution network brings difficulties to power flow calculation. In order to achieve photovoltaic utilization through optimal power flow, a photovoltaic-energy storage collaborative control method for low-voltage distribution networks based on the optimal power flow of a three-phase four-wire system is proposed. Considering the amplitude and phase angle of voltage and current, a three-phase four-wire node admittance matrix was used to establish the network topology of the low-voltage distribution network. Also, to minimize the network loss, the three-phase unbalance and voltage deviation. a multi-objective optimization model based on three-phase four-wire network topology was established considering the voltage constraints, reverse power flow constraints and neutral line current constraints. Through improving the node admittance matrix and model convexity, the complexity of solving the problem is reduced. The CPLEX algorithm package was used to solve the problem. Based on a 21-bus three-phase four-wire low-voltage distribution network, a 24-h multi-period simulation was undertaken to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

This paper assumes a smart grid framework where the driving patterns for electric vehicles are known, time variations in electricity prices are communicated to householders, and data on voltage variation throughout the distribution system are available. Based on this information, an aggregator with access to this data can be employed to minimise electric vehicles charging costs to the owner whilst maintaining acceptable distribution system voltages. In this study, electric vehicle charging is assumed to take place only in the home. A single-phase Low Voltage (LV) distribution network is investigated where the local electric vehicles penetration level is assumed to be 100%. Electric vehicle use patterns have been extracted from the UK Time of Use Survey data with a 10-min resolution and the domestic base load is generated from an existing public domain model. Apart from the so-called real time price signal, which is derived from the electricity system wholesale price, the cost of battery degradation is also considered in the optimal scheduling of electric vehicles charging. A simple and effective heuristic method is proposed to minimise the electric vehicles’ charging cost whilst satisfying the requirement of state of charge for the electric vehicles’ battery. A simulation in OpenDSS over a period of 24 h has been implemented, taking care of the network constraints for voltage level at the customer connection points. The optimisation results are compared with those obtained using dynamic optimal power flow.

The increasingly serious energy crisis and environmental pollution problems promote the large-scale application of microgrids (MGs) and electric vehicles (EVs). As the main carrier of MGs and EVs, distribution network is gradually presenting multi-source and active characteristics. A fast service restoration method of multi-source active distribution network with MGs and EVs is proposed in this paper for service restoration of distribution network, which takes effectiveness, rapidity, economy and reliability into consideration. Then, different optimal power flow (OPF) models for the service restoration strategy are constructed separately to minimize the network loss after service restoration. In addition, a genetic algorithm was introduced to solve the OPF model. The analysis of the service restoration strategy is carried out on an IEEE distribution system with three-feeder and eighteen nodes containing MGs and EVs, and the feasibility and effectiveness are verified

Challenges in the coordination between the transmission system operator (TSO) and the distribution system operator (DSO) have risen continuously with the integration of distributed energy resources (DER). These technologies have the possibility to provide reactive power support for system operators. Considering the Portuguese reactive power policy as an example of the regulatory framework, this paper proposes a methodology for proactive reactive power management of the DSO using the renewable energy sources (RES) considering forecast uncertainty available in the distribution system. The proposed method applies a stochastic sequential alternative current (AC)-optimal power flow (SOPF) that returns trustworthy solutions for the DSO and optimizes the use of reactive power between the DSO and DER. The method is validated using a 37-bus distribution network considering real data. Results proved that the method improves the reactive power management by taking advantage of the full capabilities of the DER and by reducing the injection of reactive power by the TSO in the distribution network and, therefore, reducing losses.

In recent years, the installation of residential Distributed Energy Resources (DER) that produce (mainly rooftop photovoltaics usually bundled with battery system) or consume (electric heat pumps, controllable loads, electric vehicles) electric power is continuously increasing in Low Voltage (LV) distribution networks. Several technical challenges may arise through the massive integration of DER, which have to be addressed by the distribution grid operator. However, DER can provide certain degree of flexibility to the operation of distribution grids, which is generally performed with temporal shifting of energy to be consumed or injected. This work advances a horizon optimization control framework which aims to efficiently schedule the LV network’s operation in day-ahead scale coordinating multiple DER. The main objectives of the proposed control is to ensure secure LV grid operation in the sense of admissible voltage bounds and rated loading conditions for the secondary transformer. The proposed methodology leans on a multi-period three-phase Optimal Power Flow (OPF) addressed as a nonlinear optimization problem. The resulting horizon control scheme is validated within an LV distribution network through multiple case scenarios with high microgeneration and electric vehicle integration providing admissible voltage limits and avoiding unnecessary active power curtailments.

The modernization of the distribution grid requires a huge amount of data to be transmitted and handled by the network. The deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure systems results in an increased traffic generated by smart meters. In this work, we examine the smart meter traffic that needs to be accommodated by a real distribution system. Parameters such as the message size and the message transmission frequency are examined and their effect on traffic is showed. Limitations of the system are presented, such as the buffer capacity needs and the maximum message size that can be communicated. For this scope, we have used the parameters of a real distribution network, based on a survey at which the European Distribution System Operators (DSOs) have participated. For the smart meter traffic, we have used two popular specifications, namely the G3-PLC–“G3 Power Line communication” and PRIME–acronym for “PoweRline Intelligent Metering Evolution”, to simulate the characteristics of a system that is widely used in practice. The results can be an insight for further development of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems that control and monitor the Low Voltage (LV) distribution grid. The paper presents an analysis towards identifying the needs of distribution networks with respect to telecommunication data as well as the main parameters that can affect the Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) system performance. Identifying such parameters is consequently beneficial to designing more efficient ICT systems for Advanced Metering Infrastructure.

The technology advancement and cost decline of renewable and sustainable energy increase the penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution systems. Transactive energy helps balance the local generation and demand. Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading is a promising business model for transactive energy. Such a market scheme can increase the revenue of DER owners and reduce the waste of renewable energy. This article proposes an equilibrium model of a P2P transactive energy market. Every participant seeks the maximum personal interest, with the options of importing or providing energy from/to any other peer across different buses of the distribution network. The market equilibrium condition is obtained by combining the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions of all problems of individual participants together. The energy transaction price is endogenously determined from the market equilibrium condition, which is cast as a mixed-integer linear program and solved by a commercial solver. The transactive energy flow is further embedded in the optimal power flow problem to ensure operating constraints of the distribution network. We propose a remedy to recover a near optimal solution when the second-order cone relaxation is inexact. Finally, a case study demonstrates that the proposed P2P market benefits all participants.

The impacts of uptake and electricity load profiles of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Heat Pumps (HPs) on the low voltage (LV) distribution networks were analyzed. The United Kingdom (UK) has a legally mandated policy concerning reduction of greenhouse gasses (GHGs) emissions. Therefore, the integration of low carbon technologies (LCTs) especially EVs and HPs at the LV networks is expected to increase in the drive to reducing the GHGs emissions. Future uptake scenarios, adapted from the National Grid studies, of EVs and HPs were developed for a real and typical urban LV distribution network in Great Britain (GB). Gridlab-D, an agent-based power system simulation software, was used to model the LV distribution network. The model was run for four different scenarios considering seasonal load profiles and projected EVs and HPs uptakes for each of the year 2020, 2030, 2040 and 2050 respectively. The results were analyzed in terms of transformer loading, voltage profiles of the feeders, and the ampacity loading of the cables for the different scenarios of the years.
