It is expected that a coordinated operation of several system integrity protection schemes will become a necessity in the future. This research represents an innovative strategy for coordinating under-frequency load shedding and intentional controlled islanding schemes for improving electric power system stability and resilience. In the great majority of real-world cases, both approaches follow conventional tactics, i.e., disconnecting a fixed number of feeders at predefined frequency thresholds and isolating a predefined area of a power system regardless of the actual conditions. Under the newly arisen network conditions in which weather-dependent distributed energy sources introduce a significant level of intermittency, conventional approaches need to be upgraded in order to retain a high level of power system operation security. In this paper, a mixed-integer linear programming approach is used to adjust the island size, including/excluding additional substations according to the available amount of generation in the region. The fine-tuning of the power rebalancing is achieved by potentially blocking selected load shedding stages. This minimizes the power imbalance of the newly formed islands, which helps to reduce the number of partial or even total blackouts and also accelerates the power system’s restoration process. The optimization approach was tested on a generic IEEE 39-bus network and shows promising results along with the capability of coping with real-world applications using wide-area monitoring systems as a source of real-time measurements. The results also indicated the importance of appropriate load modelling since both voltage and frequency dependence are recognized to have a significant effect on intentional controlled islanding.

The main objective of electric power dispatch is to provide electricity to the customers at low cost and high reliability. Transmission line failures constitute a great threat to the electric power system security. We use a Markov decision process (MDP) approach to model the sequential dispatch decision making process where demand level and transmission line availability change from hour to hour. The action space is defined by the electricity network constraints. Risk of the power system is the loss of transmission lines, which could cause involuntary load shedding or cascading failures. The objective of the model is to minimize the expected long-term discounted cost (including generation, load shedding, and cascading failure costs). Policy iteration can be used to solve this model. At the policy improvement step, a stochastic mixed integer linear program is solved to obtain the optimal action. We use a PJM network example to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Background & Objectives: The global power system is in a state of continuous evolution, incorporating more and more renewable energy systems. The converter-based systems are void of inherent inertia control behavior and are unable to curb minor frequency deviations. The traditional power system, on the other hand, is made up majorly of synchronous generators that have their inertia and governor response for frequency control. For improved inertial and primary frequency response, the existing frequency control methods need to be modified and an additional power reserve is to be maintained mandatorily for this purpose. Energy self-sufficient renewable distributed generator systems can be made possible through optimum active power control techniques. Also, when major global blackouts were analyzed for causes, solutions, and precautions, load shedding techniques were found to be a useful tool to prevent frequency collapse due to power imbalances. The pre-existing load shedding techniques were designed for traditional power systems and were tuned to eliminate low inertia generators as the first step to system stability restoration. To incorporate emerging energy possibilities, the changes in the mixed power system must be addressed and new frequency control capabilities of these systems must be researched. Discussion: In this paper, the power reserve control schemes that enable frequency regulation in the widely incorporated solar photovoltaic and wind turbine generating systems are discussed. Techniques for Under Frequency Load Shedding (UFLS) that can be effectively implemented in renewable energy enabled micro-grid environment for frequency regulation are also briefly discussed. The paper intends to study frequency control schemes and technologies that promote the development of self- sustaining micro-grids. Conclusion: The area of renewable energy research is fast emerging with immense scope for future developments. The comprehensive literature study confirms the possibilities of frequency and inertia response enhancement through optimum energy conservation and control of distributed energy systems.

Controlled islanding has been proposed as a last resort action to stop blackouts from happening when all standard methods have failed. Successful controlled islanding has to deal with three important issues: when, and where to island, and the evaluation of the dynamic stability in each island after islanding. This paper provides a framework for preventing wide-area blackouts using wide area measurement systems (WAMS), which consists of three stages to execute a successful islanding strategy. Normally, power system collapses and blackouts occur shortly after a cascading outage stage. Using such circumstances, an adapted single machine equivalent (SIME) method was used online to determine transient stability before blackout was imminent, and was then employed to determine when to island based on transient instability. In addition, SIME was adopted to assess the dynamic stability in each island after islanding, and to confirm that the chosen candidate island cutsets were stable before controlled islanding was undertaken. To decide where to island, all possible islanding cutsets were provided using the power flow (PF) tracing method. SIME helped to find the best candidate islanding cutset with the minimal PF imbalance, which is also a transiently stable islanding strategy. In case no possible island cutset existed, corresponding corrective actions such as load shedding and critical generator tripping, were performed in each formed island. Finally, an IEEE 39-bus power system with 10 units was employed to test this framework for a three-stage controlled islanding strategy to prevent imminent blackouts.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze real-world flight data of a piston engine training aircraft collected from an internet-based radar service, along with wind data provided by a weather forecast model, and to use such data to design a hybrid electric power system. Design/methodology/approach The modeling strategy starts from the power demand imposed by a real-world wind-corrected flight profile, where speed and altitude are provided as functions of time, and goes through the calculation of the efficiency of the powertrain components when they meet such demand. Each component of the power system and, in particular, the engine and the propeller, is simulated as a black box with an efficiency depending on the actual working conditions. In the case of hybrid electric power system, the battery charging and discharging processes are simulated with the Shepherd model. Findings The variability of power demand and fuel consumption for a training aircraft is analyzed by applying the proposed methodology to the Piper PA-28-180 Cherokee, a very popular aircraft used for flight training, air taxi and personal use. The potentiality of hybridization is assessed by analyzing the usage of the engine over more than 90 flights. A tentative sizing of a hybrid electric power system is also proposed. It guarantees a fuel saving of about 5%. Originality/value The scientific contribution and the novelty of the investigation are related to the modeling methodology, which takes into account real-world flight conditions, and the application of hybridization to a training aircraft.

<p>Power system-controlled islanding is one of the mitigation techniques taken to prevent blackouts during severe outage. The implementation of controlled islanding will lead to the formation of few islands, that can operate as a stand-alone island. However, some of these islands may not be balanced in terms of generation and load after the islanding execution. Therefore, a good load shedding scheme is required to meet the power balance criterion so that it can operate as a balanced stand-alone island. Thus, this paper developed a load shedding scheme-based metaheuristics technique namely modified discrete evolutionary programming (MDEP) technique to determine the optimal amount of load to be shed in order to produce balanced stand-alone islands. The developed load shedding scheme is evaluated and validated with two other load shedding techniques which are conventional EP and exhaustive search techniques. The IEEE 30-bus and 39-bus test systems were utilized for this purpose. The results proves that the load shedding based MDEP technique produces the optimal amount of loads to be shed with shortest computational time as compared with the conventional EP and exhaustive search techniques.</p>

It is critical for today's power system to remain in a state of equilibrium under normal conditions and severe disturbances. Power imbalance between the load and the generation can severely affect system stability. Therefore, it is necessary that these imbalance conditions be addressed in the minimum time possible. It is well known that power system frequency is directly proportional to the speed of rotation of synchronous machines and is also a function of the active power demand. As a consequence, when active power demand is greater than the generation, synchronous generators tends to slow down and the frequency decreases to even below threshold if not quickly addressed. One of the most common methods of restoring frequency is the use of under frequency load shedding (UFLS) techniques. In this chapter, load shedding techniques are presented in general but with special focus on UFLS.

In this study, a type-2 fuzzy chance-constrained fractional integrated programming (T2FCFP) approach is developed for the planning of sustainable management in an electric power system (EPS) under complex uncertainties. Through simultaneously coupling mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), chance-constrained stochastic programming (CCSP), and type-2 fuzzy mathematical programming (T2FMP) techniques into a fractional programming (FP) framework, T2FCFP can tackle dual objective problems of uncertain parameters with both type-2 fuzzy characteristics and stochastic effectively and enhance the robustness of the obtained decisions. T2FCFP has been applied to a case study of a typical electric power system planning to demonstrate these advantages, where issues of clean energy utilization, air-pollutant emissions mitigation, mix ratio of renewable energy power generation in the entire energy supply, and the displacement efficiency of electricity generation technologies by renewable energy are incorporated within the modeling formulation. The suggested optimal alternative that can produce the desirable sustainable schemes with a maximized share of clean energy power generation has been generated. The results obtained can be used to conduct desired energy/electricity allocation and help decision-makers make suitable decisions under different input scenarios.
