Our basic objects will be compact, even-dimensional, locally symmetric Riemannian manifolds with strictly negative sectional curvature. The goal of the present paper is to investigate the prime geodesic theorems that are associated with this class of spaces. First, following classical Randol’s appraoch in the compact Riemann surface case, we improve the error term in the corresponding result. Second, we reduce the exponent in the newly acquired remainder by using the Gallagher–Koyama techniques. In particular, we improve DeGeorge’s bound Oxη, 2ρ − ρn ≤ η < 2ρ up to Ox2ρ−ρηlogx−1, and reduce the exponent 2ρ − ρn replacing it by 2ρ − ρ4n+14n2+1 outside a set of finite logarithmic measure. As usual, n denotes the dimension of the underlying locally symmetric space, and ρ is the half-sum of the positive roots. The obtained prime geodesic theorem coincides with the best known results proved for compact Riemann surfaces, hyperbolic three-manifolds, and real hyperbolic manifolds with cusps.

Abstract Abelian covers of hyperbolic three-manifolds are ubiquitous. We prove the local mixing theorem of the frame flow for abelian covers of closed hyperbolic three-manifolds. We obtain a classification theorem for measures invariant under the horospherical subgroup. We also describe applications to the prime geodesic theorem as well as to other counting and equidistribution problems. Our results are proved for any abelian cover of a homogeneous space Γ0∖G where G is a rank one simple Lie group and Γ0 < G is a convex cocompact Zariski dense subgroup.

Green [5] conjectured that if $M$ is a closed Riemannian manifold of negative sectional curvature such that the mean curvatures of the horospheres through each point depend only on the point, then $V$ is a locally symmetric space of rank one. He proved this in dimension two. In this paper we prove that under Green's assumption, $M$ must be asymptotically harmonic and that the geodesic flow on $M$ is $C^{\infty}$ conjugate to that of a locally symmetric space of rank one. Combining this with the recent rigidity theorem of Besson–Courtois–Gallot [1], it follows that Green's conjecture is true for all dimensions.

The purpose of this paper is two-sided. First, we obtain the correct estimate of the error term in the classical prime geodesic theorem for compact symmetric space SL4. As it turns out, the corrected error term depends on the degree of a certain polynomial appearing in the functional equation of the attached zeta function. This is in line with the known result in the case of compact Riemann surface, or more generally, with the corresponding result in the case of compact locally symmetric spaces of real rank one. Second, we derive a weighted form of the theorem. In particular, we prove that the aforementioned error term can be significantly improved when the classical approach is replaced by its higher level analogue.

AbstractWe prove upper bounds for geodesic periods of automorphic forms over general rank one locally symmetric spaces. Such periods are integrals of automorphic forms restricted to special totally geodesic cycles of the ambient manifold and twisted with automorphic forms on the cycles. The upper bounds are in terms of the Laplace eigenvalues of the two automorphic forms, and they generalize previous results for real hyperbolic manifolds to the context of all rank one locally symmetric spaces.

AbstractThe squared distance curvature is a kind of two-point curvature the sign of which turned out to be crucial for the smoothness of optimal transportation maps on Riemannian manifolds. Positivity properties of that new curvature have been established recently for all the simply connected compact rank one symmetric spaces, except the Cayley plane. Direct proofs were given for the sphere, and an indirect one (via the Hopf fibrations) for the complex and quaternionic projective spaces. Here, we present a direct proof of a property implying all the preceding ones, valid on every positively curved Riemannian locally symmetric space.

AbstractWe consider the class of compact Riemann surfaces which are ramified coverings of the Riemann sphere $\hat {\mathbb {C}}$ ℂ ̂ . Based on a triangulation of this covering we define discrete (multivalued) harmonic and holomorphic functions. We prove that the corresponding discrete period matrices converge to their continuous counterparts. In order to achieve an error estimate, which is linear in the maximal edge length of the triangles, we suitably adapt the triangulations in a neighborhood of every branch point. Finally, we also prove a convergence result for discrete holomorphic integrals for our adapted triangulations of the ramified covering.
