The scattering from air–glass interfaces within solid-core polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM–PCF) will increase the fiber attenuation coefficient, which may lead to high transmission loss. Therefore, it is necessary to describe scattering properties to guide research into reducing fiber loss. In this paper, the loss resulting from roughness scattering at multi-hole interfaces within PM–PCF was theoretically and experimentally analyzed. A PM–PCF scattering model was established to explore the scattering distribution. On the other hand, a fully automatic testing device was built to enable the measurement of a three-dimensional scattering sphere. Simulations were in good agreement with experimental measurements. Moreover, this new proposed measurement method could apply to other PCFs and it will be a useful tool for further scattering research.

Photonic crystal fiber (PCFs) offer new possibilities of realizing highly birefringence fibers due to a higher intrinsic index contrast compared to conventional fibers. Here, based on general section structure of PCFs, we take some mend in the core configuration, and achieve highly birefringence effect. A elliptic air hole and its inscribed circular high refractive material form the core of PCFs together. Especially to mention, they are being tangent at two points. By optimally selecting parameters, the effective refractive index difference between two orthogonal directions neff can reach the magnitude of 10-2. After numerical calculation, we find that increase the size of circular solid core, or long axe size of elliptic air hole, birefringence parameter of modal field can become more highly. Moreover, by matching structure parameters appropriately, the modal field diameters can be equivalent in the two orthogonal directions. A Gaussian modal field with highly birefringence character can be acquired.

In this paper, we report a numerical study of the supercontinuum (SC) generation in solid-core photonic crystal fibers infiltrated with water-ethanol mixtures. A photonic crystal fiber is constructed as borosilicate glass NC21, which consists of 7 rings of air holes infiltrated with water-ethanol mixtures. We also considered numerically the influence of concentration of the ethanol solution on the dispersion of the fundamental mode. SC generation was demonstrated for the fiber long 20 cm with a pump pulse of 200 fs, the coupled energy of 0.5 nJ at the center wavelength of 1064 nm in the normal dispersion regime. The concentration of ethanol infiltrated to the fiber, the pulse of duration and the pump energy are investigated.
