The cloud computing and microsensor technology has greatly changed environmental monitoring, but it is difficult for cloud-computing based monitoring system to meet the computation demand of smaller monitoring granularity and increasing monitoring applications. As a novel computing paradigm, edge computing deals with this problem by deploying resource on edge network. However, the particularity of environmental monitoring applications is ignored by most previous studies. In this paper, we proposed a resource allocation algorithm and a task scheduling strategy to reduce the average completion latency of environmental monitoring application, when considering the characteristic of environmental monitoring system and dependency among task. Simulations are conducted, and the results show that compared with the traditional algorithms. With considering the emergency task, the proposed methods decrease the average completion latency by 21.6% in the best scenario.

Resource allocation is vital for improving system performance in big data processing. The resource demand for various applications can be heterogeneous in cloud computing. Therefore, a resource gap occurs while some resource capacities are exhausted and other resource capacities on the same server are still available. This phenomenon is more apparent when the computing resources are more heterogeneous. Previous resource-allocation algorithms paid limited attention to this situation. When such an algorithm is applied to a server with heterogeneous resources, resource allocation may result in considerable resource wastage for the available but unused resources. To reduce resource wastage, a resource-allocation algorithm, called the minimizing resource gap (MRG) algorithm, for heterogeneous resources is proposed in this study. In MRG, the gap between resource usages for each server in cloud computing and the resource demands among various applications are considered. When an application is launched, MRG calculates resource usage and allocates resources to the server with the minimized usage gap to reduce the amount of available but unused resources. To demonstrate MRG performance, the MRG algorithm was implemented in Apache Spark. CPU- and memory-intensive applications were applied as benchmarks with different resource demands. Experimental results proved the superiority of the proposed MRG approach for improving the system utilization to reduce the overall completion time by up to 24.7% for heterogeneous servers in cloud computing.

This research aims to develop an automatic unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based indoor environmental monitoring system for the acquisition of data at a very fine scale to detect rapid changes in environmental features of plants growing in greenhouses. Due to the complexity of the proposed research, in this paper we proposed an off-board distributed control system based on visual input for a micro aerial vehicle (MAV) able to hover, navigate, and fly to a desired target location without considerably affecting the effective flight time. Based on the experimental results, the MAV was able to land on the desired location within a radius of about 10 cm from the center point of the landing pad, with a reduction in the effective flight time of about 28%.

In order to protect the components of monitoring, some measures should be taken when refuge chamber uses outside environmental monitoring system. This paper designs a kind of protective device for outside environmental monitoring system based on related theory analysis and coal mine environment. It can protect monitoring components from gas explosion shock wave. Meantime there is good contact between sensitive element and outside environment to guarantee the normal work of the monitoring system. Finally, this paper builds the model of protective device, and analyses its structural strength.
