Abstract The monocopter is a type of micro aerial vehicle largely inspired from the flight of botanical samaras (Acer palmatum). A large section of its fuselage forms the single wing where all its useful aerodynamic forces are generated, making it achieve a highly efficient mode of flight. However, compared to a multi-rotor of similar weight, monocopters can be large and cumbersome for transport, mainly due to their large and rigid wing structure. In this work, a monocopter with a foldable, semi-rigid wing is proposed and its resulting flight performance is studied. The wing is non-rigid when not in flight and relies on centrifugal forces to become straightened during flight. The wing construction uses a special technique for its lightweight and semi-rigid design, and together with a purpose-designed autopilot board, the entire craft can be folded into a compact pocketable form factor, decreasing its footprint by 69%. Furthermore, the proposed craft accomplishes a controllable flight in 5 degrees of freedom by using only one thrust unit. It achieves altitude control by regulating the force generated from the thrust unit throughout multiple rotations. Lateral control is achieved by pulsing the thrust unit at specific instances during each cycle of rotation. A closed-loop feedback control is achieved using a motion-captured camera system, where a hybrid proportional stabilizer controller and proportional-integral position controller are applied. Waypoint tracking, trajectory tracking and flight time tests were performed and analyzed. Overall, the vehicle weighs 69 g, achieves a maximum lateral speed of about 2.37 m s−1, an average power draw of 9.78 W and a flight time of 16 min with its semi-rigid wing.

Abstract The Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) with a flapping wing configuration is much more efficient and capable of generating substantial lift at low flight speeds and has excellent maneuverability. Different motor-driven mechanisms have been developed to mimic this flapping motion, but these mechanisms introduced mechanical complexity and heavy weight to the system. Piezo-electric based mechanisms have been used to solve these problems, but provide very small flapping amplitudes within the size limitation of MAVs. So some kind of amplification mechanism is needed. In this paper, a flexible wing is created by attaching a polymer skin to a pair of carbon fiber reinforced plastic spars. This wing is connected by means of an elastic-element (EE) to a pair of piezoelectric unimorphs (piezofan). The motion from the piezofan to the wing is transferred through this EE. Simulation has been done by applying sinusoidal voltages of varying frequency to this piezofan and observations have been made for the flapping amplitude of the wing for different stiffness of the EE. It is observed that the amplitude of the peak flapping amplitude initially increases, attains a maximum value, then decreases again with an increase in the stiffness of the EE. It is also observed that as the EE stiffness increases, the corresponding peak of the flapping amplitude shifts towards higher frequency.

In recent years, the proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has increased dramatically. UAVs can accomplish complex or dangerous tasks in a reliable and cost-effective way but are still limited by power consumption problems, which pose serious constraints on the flight duration and completion of energy-demanding tasks. The possibility of providing UAVs with advanced decision-making capabilities in an energy-effective way would be extremely beneficial. In this paper, we propose a practical solution to this problem that exploits deep learning on the edge. The developed system integrates an OpenMV microcontroller into a DJI Tello Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV). The microcontroller hosts a set of machine learning-enabled inference tools that cooperate to control the navigation of the drone and complete a given mission objective. The goal of this approach is to leverage the new opportunistic features of TinyML through OpenMV including offline inference, low latency, energy efficiency, and data security. The approach is successfully validated on a practical application consisting of the onboard detection of people wearing protection masks in a crowded environment.

Tracking a micro aerial vehicle (MAV) is challenging because of its small size and swift motion. A new model was developed by combining compact and adaptive search region (SR). The model can accurately and robustly track MAVs with a fast computation speed. A compact SR, which is slightly larger than a target MAV, is less likely to include a distracting background than a large SR; thus, it can accurately track the MAV. Moreover, the compact SR reduces the computation time because tracking can be conducted with a relatively shallow network. An optimal SR to MAV size ratio was obtained in this study. However, this optimal compact SR causes frequent tracking failures in the presence of the dynamic MAV motion. An adaptive SR is proposed to address this problem; it adaptively changes the location and size of the SR based on the size, location, and velocity of the MAV in the SR. The compact SR without adaptive strategy tracks the MAV with an accuracy of 0.613 and a robustness of 0.086, whereas the compact and adaptive SR has an accuracy of 0.811 and a robustness of 1.0. Moreover, online tracking is accomplished within approximately 400 frames per second, which is significantly faster than the real-time speed.

Unmanned aerial vehicle is becoming increasingly popular each year. Now, aeronautical researchers are focusing on size minimization of unmanned aerial vehicle, especially drone and micro aerial vehicle. The lift coefficient of micro aerial vehicle has wing dimension of 12 cm and mass of less than 7 g. In the present study, with the aid of 3D printer, polylactic acid material was used to develop the micro aerial vehicle structure for tandem wing arrangement. The materials for rigid wing skin and flexible wing skin were laminating film and latex membrane, respectively. The present work elaborates the lift coefficient profiles on rigid wing skin and flexible wing skin at wing flapping frequency of 11 Hz, three different Reynolds numbers of 14000, 19000 and 24000, and five different angles of attacks between 0° and 50°. According to the results obtained, the lift coefficient decreased as the Reynolds number increased. The lift coefficient increased up to 9 as the angle of attack increased from 0° to 50° at the Reynolds number of 14000 for flexible wing skin. The results also showed that the lift coefficient of flexible wing skin was higher than that of rigid wing skin at the attack angle of10° and below, except for the Reynolds number of 14000.

Unlike other insects, a butterfly uses a small amplitude of the wing-pitch motion for flight. From an analysis of the dynamics of real flying butterflies, we show that the restrained amplitude of the wing-pitch motion enhances the wake-capture effect so as to enhance forward propulsion. A numerical simulation refined with experimental data shows that, for a small amplitude of the wing-pitch motion, the shed vortex generated in the downstroke induces air in the wake region to flow towards the wings. This condition enables a butterfly to capture an induced flow and to acquire an additional forward propulsion, which accounts for more than 47% of the thrust generation. When the amplitude of the wing-pitch motion exceeds 45°, the flow induced by the shed vortex drifts away from the wings; it attenuates the wake-capture effect and causes the butterfly to lose a part of its forward propulsion. Our results provide one essential aerodynamic feature for a butterfly to adopt a small amplitude of the wing-pitch motion to enhance the wake-capture effect and forward propulsion. This work clarifies the variation of the flow field correlated with the wing-pitch motion, which is useful in the design of wing kinematics of a micro-aerial vehicle.
