In this paper, the performance of different optimization techniques namely, multi-objective dragonfly algorithm (MODA) and multi-objective differential evolution (MODE) are presented and compared. The uncertainty effect of a wind turbine (WT) on the performance of the distribution system is taken into account. The point estimate method (PEM) is used to model the uncertainty in wind power. Optimization methods are applied to determine the multi-objective optimal allocation of distributed generation (DG) in radial distribution systems at a different load level (light, normal, heavy load level). The multi-objective function is expressed to minimize the total power loss, total operating cost, and improve the voltage stability index of the radial distribution system (RDS). Multi-objective proposed algorithms are used to generate the Pareto optimal solutions; and a fuzzy decision-making function is used to produce a hybrid function for obtaining the best compromise solution. The proposed algorithms are carried out on 33-bus and IEEE-69-bus power systems. The simulation results show the effectiveness of installing the proper size of DG at the suitable location based on different techniques.

PurposeThis paper aims to optimally plan distributed generation (DG) and capacitor in distribution network by optimizing multiple conflicting operational objectives simultaneously so as to achieve enhanced operation of distribution system. The multi-objective optimization problem comprises three important objective functions such as minimization of total active power loss (Plosstotal), reduction of voltage deviation and balancing of current through feeder sections.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, a hybrid configuration of weight improved particle swarm optimization (WIPSO) and gravitational search algorithm (GSA) called hybrid WIPSO-GSA algorithm is proposed in multi-objective problem domain. To solve multi-objective optimization problem, the proposed hybrid WIPSO-GSA algorithm is integrated with two components. The first component is fixed-sized archive that is responsible for storing a set of non-dominated pareto optimal solutions and the second component is a leader selection strategy that helps to update and identify the best compromised solution from the archive.FindingsThe proposed methodology is tested on standard 33-bus and Indian 85-bus distribution systems. The results attained using proposed multi-objective hybrid WIPSO-GSA algorithm provides potential technical and economic benefits and its best compromised solution outperforms other commonly used multi-objective techniques, thereby making it highly suitable for solving multi-objective problems.Originality/valueA novel multi-objective hybrid WIPSO-GSA algorithm is proposed for optimal DG and capacitor planning in radial distribution network. The results demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed technique in improved distribution system planning and operation and also in achieving better optimized results than other existing multi-objective optimization techniques.

AbstractThe optimal size and location of the compensator in the distribution system play a significant role in minimizing the energy loss and the cost of reactive power compensation. This article introduces an efficient heuristic-based approach to assign static shunt capacitors along radial distribution networks using multi-objective optimization method. A new objective function different from literature is adapted to enhance the overall system voltage stability index, minimize power loss, and to achieve maximum net yearly savings. However, the capacitor sizes are assumed as discrete known variables, which are to be placed on the buses such that it reduces the losses of the distribution system to a minimum. Load sensitive factor (LSF) has been used to predict the most effective buses as the best place for installing compensator devices. IEEE 34-bus and 118-bus test distribution systems are utilized to validate and demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method. The simulation results obtained are compared with previous methods reported in the literature and found to be encouraging.

In recent years, the integration of distributed generators (DGs) in radial distribution systems (RDS) has received considerable attention in power system research. The major purpose of DG integration is to decrease the power losses and improve the voltage profiles that directly lead to improving the overall efficiency of the power system. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid optimization technique based on analytical and metaheuristic algorithms for optimal DG allocation in RDS. In the proposed technique, the loss sensitivity factor (LSF) is utilized to reduce the search space of the DG locations, while the analytical technique is used to calculate initial DG sizes based on a mathematical formulation. Then, a metaheuristic sine cosine algorithm (SCA) is applied to identify the optimal DG allocation based on the LSF and analytical techniques instead of using random initialization. To prove the superiority and high performance of the proposed hybrid technique, two standard RDSs, IEEE 33-bus and 69-bus, are considered. Additionally, a comparison between the proposed techniques, standard SCA, and other existing optimization techniques is carried out. The main findings confirmed the enhancement in the convergence of the proposed technique compared with the standard SCA and the ability to allocate multiple DGs in RDS.

This paper addresses a new methodology for the simultaneous optimal allocation of DSTATCOM and DG in radial distribution systems to maximize power loss reduction while maintaining better node voltage profiles under multilevel load profile. Cat Swarm Optimization (CSO) is one of the recently developed powerful swarm intelligence-based optimization techniques that mimics the natural behavior of cats but usually suffers from poor convergence and accuracy while subjected to large dimension problem. Therefore, an Improved CSO (ICSO) technique is proposed to efficiently solve the problem where the seeking mode of CSO is modified to enhance its exploitation potential. In addition, the problem search space is virtually squeezed by suggesting an intelligent search approach which smartly scans the problem search space. Further, the effect of network reconfiguration has also been investigated after optimally placing DSTATCOMs and DGs in the distribution network. The suggested measures enhance the convergence and accuracy of the algorithm without loss of diversity. The proposed method is investigated on 69-bus test distribution system and the application results are very promising for the operation of smart distribution systems.

Abstract The radial distribution system is a rugged system, it is also the most commonly used system, which suffers by loss and low voltage at the end bus. This loss can be reduced by the use of a capacitor in the system, which injects reactive current and also improves the voltage magnitude in the buses. The real power loss in the distribution line is the I2R loss which depends on the current and resistance. The connection of the capacitor in the bus reduces the reactive current and losses. The loss reduction is equal to the increase in generation, necessary for the electric power provided by firms. For consumers, the quality of power supply depends on the voltage magnitude level, which is also considered and hence the objective of the problem becomes the multi objective of loss minimization and the minimization of voltage deviation. In this paper, the optimal location and size of the capacitor is found using a new computational intelligent algorithm called Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA). To calculate the power flow and losses in the system, novel data structure load flow is introduced. In this, each bus is considered as a node with bus associated data. Links between the nodes are distribution lines and their own resistance and reactance. To validate the developed FPA solutions standard test cases, IEEE 33 and IEEE 69 radial distribution systems are considered.

Capacitors in distribution systems are used to supply reactive power to minimize power loss. This article presents an efficient optimization algorithm named oppositional cuckoo optimization algorithm (OCOA) for optimal allocation of capacitor in radial distribution systems to determine the optimal locations and sizes of capacitors with an objective of reduction of total cost considering different constraints. To test feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed OCOA, it is applied on 22-bus, 69-bus, 85-bus and 141-bus radial distribution systems as test studies and the results are compared with other methods available in literature. Comparison between the proposed method in this article and similar methods in other research works shows the effectiveness of the proposed method for solving optimum capacitor planning problem in radial distribution system.

This paper presents a hybrid algorithm by applying a hybrid firefly and particle swarm optimization algorithm (HFPSO) to determine the optimal sizing of distributed generation (DG) and distribution static compensator (D-STATCOM) device. A multi-objective function is employed to enhance the voltage stability, voltage profile, and minimize the total power loss of the radial distribution system (RDS). Firstly, the voltage stability index (VSI) is applied to locate the optimal location of DG and D-STATCOM respectively. Secondly, to overcome the sup-optimal operation of existing algorithms, the HFPSO algorithm is utilized to determine the optimal size of both DG and D-STATCOM. Verification of the proposed algorithm has achieved on the standard IEEE 33-bus and Iraqi 65-bus radial distribution systems through simulation using MATLAB. Comprehensive simulation results of four different cases show that the proposed HFPSO demonstrates significant improvements over other existing algorithms in supporting voltage stability and loss reduction in distribution networks. Furthermore, comparisons have achieved to demonstrate the superiority of HFPSO algorithms over other techniques due to its ability to determine the global optimum solution by easy way and speed converge feature.
