University Business Incubators: A Systematic Literature Review from 2000 to 2019

2020 ◽

Business incubation initiatives have gained increased attention of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers due to its unique ability to provide a conducive environment that develops and accelerates entrepreneurship. University-based incubation centers have become an essential part of the entrepreneurship support services at campuses to offer critical support and provide various services to newly established start-ups. Recognizing the importance of university incubation centers, researchers are studying various aspects related to university-based business incubators to promote entrepreneurship among university students. In this study, a systematic literature review on university business incubators is conducted on 61 research articles selected after a rigorous process from three databases (ISI-Web of Knowledge, Taylor & Francis, Emerald). Studies were analyzed to answer four main questions related to university business incubators' methodological considerations, proximal and distant outcomes, theoretical lenses, and major research streams. Results revealed that the majority of the research is being done in European countries and the majority of research articles (50%) were published in 2017 to 2019 most having qualitative designs that indicate the importance of campus-based incubation initiatives to promote entrepreneurship. Proximal and distant outcomes revealed various factors at individual, team, firm, institutional, and policy levels. Institutional, network, and resource based-view (RBV) is the main theoretical underpinnings focused on institutional and firm-level studies. This study contributed by analyzing, summarizing, and evaluating UBI’s literature concerning methodological considerations, proximal and distant outcomes, and trend of major research streams. Key Words; University, Business, Incubation, Entrepreneurship, Start-ups

Data mining techniques have proven quite effective not only in detecting financial statement frauds but also in discovering other financial crimes, such as credit card frauds, loan and security frauds, corporate frauds, bank and insurance frauds, etc. Classification of data mining techniques, in recent years, has been accepted as one of the most credible methodologies for the detection of symptoms of financial statement frauds through scanning the published financial statements of companies. The retrieved literature that has used data mining classification techniques can be broadly categorized on the basis of the type of technique applied, as statistical techniques and machine learning techniques. The biggest challenge in executing the classification process using data mining techniques lies in collecting the data sample of fraudulent companies and mapping the sample of fraudulent companies against non-fraudulent companies. In this article, a systematic literature review (SLR) of studies from the area of financial statement fraud detection has been conducted. The review has considered research articles published between 1995 and 2020. Further, a meta-analysis has been performed to establish the effect of data sample mapping of fraudulent companies against non-fraudulent companies on the classification methods through comparing the overall classification accuracy reported in the literature. The retrieved literature indicates that a fraudulent sample can either be equally paired with non-fraudulent sample (1:1 data mapping) or be unequally mapped using 1:many ratio to increase the sample size proportionally. Based on the meta-analysis of the research articles, it can be concluded that machine learning approaches, in comparison to statistical approaches, can achieve better classification accuracy, particularly when the availability of sample data is low. High classification accuracy can be obtained with even a 1:1 mapping data set using machine learning classification approaches.

Scholarship on the intersection of games and empathy is limited. However, over the past decade peer-reviewed articles have started to be published in this area. This study investigates this emerging scholarship on empathy and games to understand how researchers are describing, defining and communicating their work. For example, how are research articles about games defining empathy? From which disciplines are the researchers framing their studies? Which types of games are being used in the investigations? Forty-nine articles were found, coded and analysed by searching six different databases. For this investigation, each article was analysed based on the discipline, keyword(s) used to find the article, definition(s) of empathy used, types of games used in the article and the themes used in the article. Articles emerged from twelve different disciplines and described over thirteen different types of empathy. Findings were shared, as well as recommendations for researchers studying this area.

Purpose With an increasing emphasis on the reading development of L2 learners of English and a growing body of literature on L2 reading, it is now time to examine what the current research on L2 reading says about L2 learners’ reading development and to discuss what would be a desirable future for L2 reading studies. Focusing on the L2 reading of upper elementary, middle and high school students in L1 settings, this study aims to carefully, but critically, explore the major research studies published in the past three decades. In particular, it uses sociocultural and critical frameworks that view language as a social phenomenon and literacy as a constellation of socially contextualized practices to explore the issue of L2 reading. Design/methodology/approach To identify key findings about L2 reading, a systematic literature review of studies examining L2 reading in L1 settings was conducted. A critical examination and analysis of 91 studies on L2 reading for upper elementary students (Grades 4-12) are presented here. Based on the literature review, the major issues addressed in the previous section are revisited, and the requirements of future research on L2 reading are discussed. Findings Three major changes have taken place in L2 reading studies: from monolingual/L1-based research to multilingual/L2-based research; developing the socially situated model of literacy (literacies); and adopting a sociocultural and critical lens: L2 reading and L2 reading assessment. Based on the critical review of the major research studies published in the past three decades, this paper identifies the research and approach required to advance the field of L2 reading: the continua of L1 and L2 reading, macro–micro analysis of L2 reading context and diversification of L2 reading research. Originality/value Based on a systematic literature review, it demonstrates the current trends in L2 reading research, to examine the key findings and implications, and to identify what additional research or paradigms are required to advance the field. The literature review presented in this paper helps language educators, policy-makers and school administers at all levels in both first-and second-language contexts to better understand the rapidly increasing number of L2 English learners in L1 classroom settings.

Acknowledging the value of entrepreneurs in today’s society, universities are looking into mentorship to improve their support system for students considering entrepreneurship as a viable career path after graduation. This paper reports the main findings of a systematic literaturereview aimed at understanding the role that mentorship plays during the early entrepreneurial journey of university students. That is, identifying what motivates students to seek mentorship and recognizing the critical elements of successful mentorship programs that develop robustmentor-mentee relationships. The systematic literature review classified the selected articles into three thematic categories: mentoring in entrepreneurship, gender differences in mentoring, and mentorship programs in business incubation. Findings in the combined categories suggest that a positive mentoring experience depends on the mentor’s credibility and connection inthe business world and the mentee’s perception of similarities between their mentor and themselves.

Scarcity of resources, structural change during the further development of renewable energy sources, and their corresponding costs, such as increasing resource costs or penalties due to dirty production, lead industrial firms to adapt ecological actions. In this regard, research on energy utilization in production planning has received increased attention in the last years, resulting in a large number of research articles so far. With the paper at hand, we review the literature on energy-oriented production planning. The aim of this study is to derive similar core issues and related properties along energy-oriented models within hierarchical production planning. For this, we carry out a systematic literature review and analyze and synthesize 375 research articles. We classify the underlying literature with a novel two-dimensional classification scheme and identify three key topics and five frequently found characteristics, which are presented in detail throughout this article. Based on these results, we state several potentials for further research.

The interest of scientists and companies in understanding the business implications of environmental commitments is timely; however, a dilemma remains at the firm level: is environmental sustainability a strategic factor for business competitiveness? The author contributes to this international end interdisciplinary debate through a double analysis, theoretical and empirical. Starting from a systematic literature review, the main correlations between environmental commitments and business performance are identified in a scholar's perspective. Based on the results from an Italian survey, the main added values associated with certified environmental management system are verified with a manager's perspective. Finally, the findings obtained from theoretical and empirical points of view are compared, to discuss confirmations or contradictions and underline questions still open.
