AbstractObjectivesTo examine the perceived impact of international educational experiences and cultural beliefs before and after completing a 1-year Masters of Science in Nursing program.MethodsAn exploratory study was conducted among Chinese nurses studying abroad in a private medium-sized university in the United States. The 27-item electronic pre-survey was administered within 1 week of starting the program and the post-survey was administered 1 year later at the completion of the program.ResultsMajority of participants (n = 25) were female, 23–36 years of age. Findings revealed that the perceived impact of international educational experiences assessed at the start of the program was similar to the perceived impact measured at the end of the 1-year program, suggesting that the students learned and experienced what they anticipated. There was a significant impact on cultural beliefs from the start of the program compared with the end of the program suggesting that a 1-year study abroad program does influence cultural beliefs.ConclusionsUnderstanding what is important to provide in a study abroad program and providing the educational experiences identified by students as impactful are avenues to help host universities best develop their programs. Findings suggested that the 1-year program can influence foreign students’ cultural beliefs, yet the professional and personal impact of this change warrants further study.

The paper examines the features of online education in the leading universities of the BRICS countries in order to find out to what extent universities were ready for an emergency transition from traditional education to an online format in the context of a pandemic. The goals of online education, the variety of tools and technologies, the possibilities of inter-national cooperation with universities, accessibility / openness for foreign students are assessed. It has been established that the leading universities of the BRICS countries, using digital technologies in edu-cation, strive to democratize it, recommend it at the level of the country and the world as a whole, estab-lish close contacts with the national and interna-tional academic and scientific communities, and successfully respond to the challenges of reality. In general, the high-ranking universities of the BRICS countries have successfully passed the test of strength, since each of the universities already had a certain set of online education tools, and the pan-demic has become a reason for the improvement of technologies and total digitalization of education.

Lockdowns in Europe, the United States and Russia have forced universities to abandon the traditional format of education and move to online. The article analyzes the statistics of a sharp decline in foreign students studying at universities in the United States, Great Britain and Russia, and examines the attempts of world universities to reduce financial losses. Comparison of the difficulties faced by the teachers of Russian and Western universities revealed similar problems, the main ones of which are devaluation of co-presence, the growth of academic cheating and the lack of control over the student's independent work. The only possible way to objectively assess the student's knowledge during an online session is to change the format of the exam, namely the introduction of the Open Book Exam. Exam questions within this format are formed in the form of a solution to a specific "case", which makes it possible to assess not the student's ability to memorize theoretical material, but his ability for critical and analytical thinking, the skills of applying the knowledge gained in practice.
