The paper aims to evaluate factors according to the planned behavioral theory of the community’s intentional attitude towards wastewater reuse. A huge amount of domestic wastewater will deplete water resources if not treated and reused. The survey results from more than 1000 households in the three major cities of Vietnam (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, and Da Nang) show that the community’s intention is good and all have a positive impact on the people’s satisfaction and water cycle management performance. All five factors: emotion, fairness, health risk, subjective norm, trust, have a positive impact on intention to use reused wastewater. Different from other studies, this research assesses the impact of intention to reuse wastewater on community satisfaction. Previous research showed that health risk negatively influenced intention; this study showed that health risk positively influenced intention and community satisfaction.

The success of a module at a university of technology is measured by student performance. At the Durban University of Technology in the Department of Management Accounting, students in their second year of study struggle with conceptualising content in Cost Accounting two which affects their performance. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors which may impact on the performance of Cost Accounting two students and to determine if these factors have a significant association with a student’s performance in Cost Accounting two. Many studies have identified various factors which may influence students’ academic performance. For the purpose of this study, five factors that may affect student performance were identified and examined. The independent variables or factors identified were attendance, age, gender, grade 12 results and language. The dependent variable for this study was performance (in Cost Accounting two). In order to measure the performance of students included in the study, the percentage achieved in Cost Accounting two for the semester was used. Although studies have been conducted on student performance at universities across South Africa and around the world, limited studies were conducted on the performance of Cost Accounting two students within South Africa. The study aimed to identify the factors that affect the performance of Cost and Management Accounting students at a university of technology and the impact of those factors on performance. The study found that only student attendance has a positive impact on student performance in Cost Accounting two. The findings of this study may be useful to the Department of Management Accounting at the DUT and other universities of technology. It is hoped that the current study will be useful to other teachers of cost and management accounting at universities on which factors influence the academic achievement of students.

Relevance: Since 01 January 2020, the provision of radiation therapy (RT) at Almaty Oncology Center was optimized using the Visual Care Path (VCP) tool of the ARIA 15.6 oncology system, which supports the implementation of sequential and parallel mandatory procedures – from patient registration to completion of treatment. The purpose was to study the impact of the implemented artificial intelligence system on RT effectiveness, safety, the share of complex RT techniques, and measure staff satisfaction and proficiency. Results: The share of intensive modulated radiation therapy sessions changed from 39.3% in 2019 to 46.6% in 2020. After the implementation of VCP, timely pre-irradiation preparation of patients (centering, delineation, dose prescription) by department doctors increased from 76% to 91%, OR = 3.2; timely measurements of plans increased from 85% to 96%, OR = 4.7; the frequency of major events (the ratio of plans with errors or unsuccessful plans to the total number of plans, delineation of organs at risk and targets, dose prescription) decreased from 12% to 3%, OR = 4.5; the frequency of minor events (late notification of the patient of the treatment commencement, timely transition to the next stage of patient preparation for treatment decreased from 32% to 10%, OR = 4.5. Staff proficiency in VCP has increased by 75%. Following the anonymous survey results, 85% of staff reported a positive impact of VCP on the workflow. Conclusion: The share of complex methods of RT has increased by 7.3%. The implementation of VCP significantly increased the workflow efficiency – by 3.9 times, reduced the number of major and minor events by 4.4 times. It allowed using a paperless communication with the executor’s identification at each stage of RT. The new technique was also quickly adopted and favorably accepted by the staff.

The explosive growth of the Internet in recent years has led to the development of online newspapers. To survive in the context of printed newspaper sales declining, the global newspaper industry is starting to collect fee from online newspapers’ readers. In Vietnam, the ability to attract readers of online newspapers is still low. In fact, paid online newspapers in Vietnam are still at the trial stage. Therefore, studies to find out the impact factors of intention to use paid online newspapers are very necessary in Vietnam. The proposed research model is built from TPB and other previous researches. Quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire survey with 359 valid participants. By adopting SEM, results showed that the measurement model fitted data well and all hypotheses were acceptable. The study showed that the attitude factor had the largest impact on readers’ intention to pay. For these factors influencing the attitude factor, the perceived benefit factor had the most significantly positive impact and the free mentality factor had the most significantly negative impact. Through this results, some implications to increase the readers’ intention to use paid online newspaper are proposed for service providers and government agencies concerned.

Abstract. The impact of the assimilation of surface soil moisture on the simulations of the physically based hydrological model DHSVM (Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model) is investigated in this paper for a 12 000 km catchment located in Benin, West Africa. Thanks to a large number of rain gauges spread all over the entire basin, reference simulations are performed from one year of calibration (in 2010) and two years of evaluation (2011 and 2012) based on in situ measurements of streamflow at the outlet and local observations of soil moisture at different soil depths and evapotranspiration. In a second step, several satellite products (PERSIANN, TRMM-3B42RT, and CMORPH) are used instead of in situ precipitation measurements. These products bring too much water (especially PERSIANN and CMORPH), sometimes not at the correct time of the year, which has a large impact on various hydrological variables. In order to correct for the wrong amount of input water brought by the satellite precipitation products, the SMOS satellite soil moisture observations are assimilated in the hydrological model. An optimal interpolation is implemented here using an influence radius in order to replicate the field of view of the SMOS instrument. The assimilation of SMOS data shows a positive impact on the soil moisture at different depths (5, 40, and 80 cm defined in the model), with a decrease of the bias compared to the in situ measurements. Streamflow is also positively impacted with a large improvement of the Nash efficiency coefficient after assimilation (from negative to positive for PERSIANN and CMORPH). Finally, the temporal evolution of the water table depth is also greatly improved (from 0.1–0.3 to 0.8–0.9 for PERSIANN and CMORPH). This work shows that the use of satellite precipitation products into a hydrological model can lead to large errors that can be reduced by assimilating satellite soil moisture, which has a positive impact on the estimation of hydrological variables at deeper layers and at other stages of the water cycle.

This study sought to examine the impact of dairy enterprises on employment creation and income generation in Hadiya zone, Ethiopia. Data were collected from 385 randomly selected household heads, three FGDs participants and five key informants’ interviews. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and propensity score matching. The survey results showed that out of 385 sampled household heads 126 (32.5%) were members and the remaining 259 (67.5%) were non-members of micro and small dairy enterprises. The propensity score matching result shows that being member had significant positive impact on members’ employment creation and income generation. The result revealed that the membership resulted in average increment of household’s annually employment creation by about 4 persons (33.98%) and income generation by Birr 12,339.00 (32.57%). The result showed that membership in dairy enterprises had a significant and positive impact on employment creation and income generation. The impact estimates were found to be insensitive to unobserved selection bias. It is, therefore, essential to expand and strengthen development of dairy enterprises and the membership of households in dairy enterprises to increase employment creation and income generation of members.

Purpose – Fostering employee engagement in large organizations is a formidable problem that gets even more challenging in a sluggish economy, when the standard lever of monetary incentives are not a viable option for boosting employee engagement and motivation. As the organization gets larger, building emotional connectedness or bonding becomes challenging as teams expand to operate in different time zones. The overwhelming pace of work in the modern workplace can also hamper bonding. Yet emotional connectedness, when present, serves as a catalyst in driving superior performance and employee loyalty. The culture of many large organizations discourages innovation and out-of-the-box thinking because their institutional structures encourage risk aversion. Even though large organizations are best positioned to absorb the ups and downs of intelligent risk-taking, their talent processes enforce conformity, legitimize mediocrity and penalize failed attempts at innovative thinking. Performance appraisals tend to promote employees who take the path of least resistance. Managers, of course, help perpetuate this risk-averse cycle of mediocrity. Either they have been conditioned to think only in a linear fashion or organizational systems perpetuate managerial insecurity at all levels. This insecurity manifests in several ways: managers may take credit for the work performed by a subordinate; shoot down ideas a subordinate may have; or deflect opportunities that a subordinate may get. Survival in such an environment is based on being average and staying within the system. As a result, the spirit of entrepreneurship is lost. The authors designed a creative and playful contest called “Maverick” to tackle employee engagement in large organizations. The contest deeper goals include: shifting culture and behavior, talent discovery, brand building and meaningful engagement. The impact of the program on a broader organizational culture parameters were assessed through a survey. The survey results validate the impact of the program. Design/methodology/approach – The paper develops a conceptual approach that underlies the design of the Maverick program. Surveys were deployed to determine the perceived impact of the program on the broader culture. Findings – The secret ingredient in employee engagement is gaining the “emotional share of wallet” of employees to drive meaningful, enduring organizational change. Emotional wallet share is the sweet spot that lies at the intersection of employees’ skill sets, their aspirations and the value they generate for the organization. Proactively identifying the sweet spot empowers an organization to capture employees’ emotional wallet share to identify enablers and catalysts that can unlock motivation and performance. The survey results indicate that the Maverick contest was perceived to have a positive impact on all the identified attributes. This is a testament to the program’s success as a pivotal driver of a positive organizational culture. Further, it validates that the Maverick contest identifies several levers that leaders can use to positively influence organizational culture. Research limitations/implications – The organizations can adapt the proposed conceptual framework in designing meaningful programs to tackle employee engagement and motivation. Practical implications – The paper provides a meaningful framework to tackle employee engagement in large organizations. The Maverick approach is of interest to leaders of large organizations that are struggling to increase employee engagement with limited resources and that wish to foster creativity to drive innovation. The program offers a compelling way for talented professionals to meaningfully contribute to their organization that is agnostic to their position in the hierarchy. It gives employees the freedom to strive without being paralyzed by fear of failure; the chance to build their personal brand and pride; and a safe environment in which they can question received wisdom and attempt an unconventional approach to problem-solving. It creates a playful environment to bust stress, foster innovation and encourage an entrepreneurial mindset. Originality/value – This paper offers a superior alternative to the standard gamification solutions that are routinely applied to business situations. Gamification mechanics work effectively in roles that are transactional, instead of roles that demand autonomy, mastery and a sense of purpose. Maverick program is designed while being mindful of the intrinsic motivation of the professionals.
