Assessment of agromorphological similarities between parents and F1 progenies in the crossing of Dwarf Malayan x Vanuatu Tall coconuts in Côte d’Ivoire ABSTRACT Objectives: The study was conducted to assess the agromorphological resemblance of the F1 NJM x GVT hybrid progenies to those of their parents in Côte d'Ivoire in order to predict the characteristics of the descendants and adopt appropriate cultivation techniques and uses. Methodology and results: Thirty variables were measured on 18 descendants and their male parents GVT and female NJM. It appears that the vegetative characteristics of the NJM x GVT descendants are relatively close to their male GVT sires. Heritability ranges from 10% to 40% for all descriptors. It is higher for C20, LGF, ILE, ILPRF and Déq with a value of 40% that contributed more to the approximation of the descendants of their male parent. Agromorphological gains compared to the two spawners are observed for most characters. The rates vary on average from 0.73% to 84.26% depending on the trait and the sire. Conclusion and application of the results: These results will serve as a guide for breeders as to the expected results of an F1 offspring of large coconut palm crossed by Dwarf coconut tree. These hybrids can be grown and used in the same way as their male parent. Key words: Coconut palm, agromorphological characteristic, NJM x GVT hybrid, heritability, gain.

<p>Several palm plants have social and economic roles worldwide by providing drinks from their sap. In Côte d’Ivoire, management of the coconut sap is not yet practiced. In this study, parameters related to production of sap have been assessed from four coconut cultivars namely PB 113+ and PB 121+ hybrids and WAT and MYD varieties. From all the unopened inflorescences (spathes) studied into the coconut crown, whose ranks varied from 7 to 9, that of rank 8 yielded the highest volume of sap. From this spathe, the PB113+ hybrid provided the best yield of sap (61.81 ± 20.41 l). Most important proportion of that sap volume was recorded at the morning harvesting. The sap production duration of a spathe varied from 24 ± 1.87 days (MYD) to 46.78 ± 1.86 days (PB 113+). That duration depended on the length of spathes and regular sap flow allowed by them. Furthermore, the PB 113+ had the highest number of fruits (NBF = 174.33 ± 78.45 fruits). The results showed that volume of sap available is closely related to the length of production (r = 0.78) and the cultivar’s nut yield (r = 0.82). The use of PB 113+ hybrid which provided highest quantity of sap is recommended for promoting the production of coconut sap in Côte d’Ivoire in order to improve the benefits derived from this plant.</p>

A new Afrotropical species of Anagrus Haliday (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), A. nedotepae Triapitsyn sp. n., is described and illustrated. The type series was reared from parasitized eggs of the leafhopper Nedotepa curta Dmitriev (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) during a survey for its natural enemies in Côte d’Ivoire. This peculiar leafhopper, recently described from Ghana (Dmitriev 2016), lays its eggs on leaflets of coconut palm, and could be an economically important pest of this crop in West Africa, particularly because it is a suspected vector of the phytoplasma associated with the Côte d’Ivoire Lethal Yellowing disease of coconut, as characterized by Arocha-Rosete et al. (2014). Coconut lethal yellowing diseases cause severe economic losses to the very important coconut growing industry in several West African countries and elsewhere, being considered a threat of global economic and social significance (Gurr et al. 2016). Thus, the parasitoid may be of potential importance for natural biological control of this pest and urgently needs a scientific name to be used in further publications on its biology and ecology. Such studies are currently underway by the second author, who collected the type series of the new species.
