scholarly journals Failure Factors Quality in Vocational and Technical Education in Nigeria Higher Institutions: The Use of Rasch Model

The study is a case study of the student academic performance in vocational and technical education at the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti. The academic performance of students has been abysmally low. This has grossly impacted the students’ enrolment in the departments and the College in general. The paper identifies the major causes of the failures in vocational and technical education courses in the College. The survey research employing exploratory sequential mixed method was used. It involves 12 Participants and 50 respondents. The Nvivo12 software was used to obtain the word cloud. The Rasch Analysis Model was applied to obtain the Person and Item separations, reliabilities and the respondent’s agreement. The hierarchy details the factors in order relativity and difficulty level. Findings shows that both internal and external factors are the main sources of students’ failure.

The level of education attained by students is dependent on their ability to understand learnt concepts and demonstrate their acquired knowledge and skills in problem solving as well as their performance academically. This study sought to investigate the perceptions of lecturers on academic performance of student teachers with hearing impairments. A descriptive case study was used as research design. The study sample included three (3) Lecturers and four (4) student teachers with hearing impairments making the total of seven (7) participants who were purposively sampled. Data was generated using interviews and analysed qualitatively using thematic analysis techniques based on emerging themes from the study. The study revealed that lecturers perceived student teachers with hearing impairments as average and below-average performers academically. The study further revealed that student teachers with hearing impairments had mixed feelings towards their academic performance and perceived their academic performance as being influenced by their inability to understand concepts as well as lecturers’ inability to handle them appropriately. The study recommended the need by educators of students with hearing impairments to have positive perception towards students in order to instill self-positive regard in students. The study further recommended need for lecturers to adapt tests and examinations items in order to accommodate deaf student teachers.

Secondary school as a gateway for the development of other sectors of the educational system provides primary school leavers with the opportunity for qualitative education, the platform for skills and knowledge for vocational work, or higher institutions admission. In Nigeria, public discussions frequently focus on educational standards. This study aims to examine the influence of students' reading habits on students' academic performance. A descriptive survey design was adopted. The schools in Ibadan North LGA were randomly selected, making a total of five schools. Each of the participants was randomly selected, totaling 300 students. There was a significant positive relationship between student reading habits and student academic performance (r = 0.84). At F=1.31, there is no significant difference in the reading habit of male and female students. Reading habit enhances the academic performance of students. Therefore, students should be encouraged to inculcate in them the reading habit by providing enabling environment and infrastructures that will stimulate students to read.
