Background: Advancing medical laboratory and genomic testing is reliant on a workforce equipped with the skills required to perform and interpret the complexity of new generation assays. In certain areas, challenges in recruiting and retaining qualified laboratory staff have led to shortages of experienced professionals which may negatively influence diagnostic services. Local research in this field is limited, and this study aimed to evaluate how medical technologists and technicians perceived and related to their working environment. Methods: A mixed methods study was conducted to evaluate respondents’ perceptions of factors influencing workplace experience such as interpersonal relationships, compliance to continuing professional development (CPD), work ethic and scope of practice within the medical laboratory. A link to a web-based survey was distributed to an expert group attending the 2015 congress of the Society of Medical Laboratory Technology of South Africa (SMLTSA), Port Elizabeth. Results: Survey results indicated that 27.5% of respondents were not happy with their career choice, notably the younger generation and public sector participants, where the latter reported significantly lower salaries than those in other sectors (p < 0.05). Only 54.2% reported being active members of the SMLTSA. Difficulties in attending professional development activities were described and deviation from scope of practice noted. Some respondents felt undervalued, reporting work ethic as satisfactory. Interpersonal tension was perceived between certain groups and the level of education was least likely to be related to salary scale. Most of the respondents (98.6%) were registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Conclusion: The majority of participants reported to be satisfied with their career choice. This study was conducted prior to the introduction of the professional degree in medical laboratory science and may not be reflective of the current views of this sector of laboratory staff. However the study serves as a basis for further research using a representative sample of different laboratory professionals to assess job satisfaction and factors affecting retention of staff in medical diagnostic laboratories.

The lack of appropriately qualified teachers in South Africa is growing rapidly and debates about the decline in teacher numbers in South Africa are increasing. In this study, the results of an investigation into possible factors that impact on the career choice of teaching students are reported. The reasons why first-year teaching students at the University of Pretoria chose teachings a career were studied by using a non-experimental design (survey design; administering anon-standardised questionnaire). The results revealed, inter alia, that a number of factors influence the career choice of first-year teaching students. Trends that emerged from the current study include the following: many more women than men enter the teaching profession; relatively few African language speaking students choose education as a field of study and the role of parents in helping their children to choose a career cannot be underestimated.

Orientation: To examine the effects of emotional intelligence on the development of entrepreneurial intentions of university students.Research purpose: To determine whether emotional intelligence is a crucial antecedent of entrepreneurial intention to encourage entrepreneurial behaviour.Motivation of the study: By identifying all the factors that encourage entrepreneurial behaviour, policymakers and concerned stakeholders are better equipped to improve such behaviour and guarantee its success, thereby alleviating unemployment more effectively.Research design, approach and method: A positivist paradigm was used and a quantitative design used self-administered questionnaires to assess the respondents’ emotional intelligence and their intentions to start businesses. Multiple regressions and correlations were computed to test the hypotheses.Main findings: The findings revealed that there is a direct association between emotional intelligence and entrepreneurial intention, with the strongest association recorded between regulation of emotion and entrepreneurial intention and the least significant association between use of emotion and entrepreneurial intention.Practical implications: Although entrepreneurship education is important, it needs to be restructured to incorporate the practical aspects. Furthermore, educators should create a learning environment that could encourage the effective expression and use of emotions to nurture emotional intelligence.Contribution: This article is of particular value to policymakers and educators looking for ways to improve entrepreneurial effectiveness and implementation as well as scholars contemplating entrepreneurship as a career option.

Healthcare workers were the first group scheduled to receive COVID-19 vaccines when they became available in South Africa. Therefore, estimating vaccine confidence levels and intention to receive COVID-19 vaccines among healthcare workers ahead of the national vaccination roll-out was imperative. We conducted an online survey from 4 February to 7 March 2021, to assess vaccine sentiments and COVID-19 vaccine intentions among healthcare staff and students at a tertiary institution in South Africa. We enrolled 1015 participants (74.7% female). Among the participants, 89.5% (confidence interval (CI) 87.2–91.4) were willing to accept a COVID-19 vaccine, 95.4% (CI 93.9–96.6) agreed that vaccines are important for them, 95.4% (CI 93.8–96.6) that vaccines are safe, 97.4% (CI 96.2–98.3) that vaccines are effective, and 96.1% (CI 94.6–97.2) that vaccines are compatible with religion. Log binomial regression revealed statistically significant positive associations between COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and the belief that vaccines are safe (relative risk (RR) 32.2, CI 4.67–221.89), effective (RR 21.4, CI 3.16–145.82), important for children (RR 3.5, CI 1.78–6.99), important for self (RR 18.5, CI 4.78–71.12), or compatible with religion (RR 2.2, CI 1.46–3.78). The vaccine confidence levels of the study respondents were highly positive. Nevertheless, this could be further enhanced by targeted interventions.
