Across the Pacific Islands, declining natural resources have contributed to a cultural renaissance of customary ridge-to-reef management approaches. These indigenous and community conserved areas (ICCA) are initiated by local communities to protect natural resources through customary laws. To support these efforts, managers require scientific tools that track land-sea linkages and evaluate how local management scenarios affect coral reefs. We established an interdisciplinary process and modeling framework to inform ridge-to-reef management in Hawai‘i, given increasing coastal development, fishing and climate change related impacts. We applied our framework at opposite ends of the Hawaiian Archipelago, in Hā‘ena and Ka‘ūpūlehu, where local communities have implemented customary resource management approaches through government-recognized processes to perpetuate traditional food systems and cultural practices. We identified coral reefs vulnerable to groundwater-based nutrients and linked them to areas on land, where appropriate management of human-derived nutrients could prevent increases in benthic algae and promote coral recovery from bleaching. Our results demonstrate the value of interdisciplinary collaborations among researchers, managers and community members. We discuss the lessons learned from our culturally-grounded, inclusive research process and highlight critical aspects of collaboration necessary to develop tools that can inform placed-based solutions to local environmental threats and foster coral reef resilience.

In Palawan, Philippines, Honda Bay is fast becoming a target recreational site for curious domestic and foreign visitors. The general objectives of this resource assessment are to gather information regarding status of the marine resources in Pandan Island, and to provide recommendations for their sustainable use. Assessment was done using line intercept transect (LIT), fish visual census (FVC) and an imaginary transect belt for coral cover, fish, and macro-invertebrates, respectively. Average live coral cover around Pandan Island can be categorized as good (57%), with stations 7 and 1 and 2 categorized as excellent (76-100%) and fair (26-50%) conditions, respectively. Some 178 fish species were recorded in Pandan Island waters of which seven (7) highly target and 29 common commercial fish species were found. The estimated total reef fish biomass around Pandan Island is 588 mt/ km2. A total of eight macro invertebrate (shells, etc.) species belonging to five families was found around Pandan Island. The study concluded that of these eight species, six are commercially important,Tridacnacro cea(taklobo), Tridacnasquamosa (taklobo), Hippopusporcellanus(taklobo), Trochusniloticus(topshell), Pinna nobilis (tarab), and Bohadschiamarmota (sea cucumber). Five of these species the T. crocea, T. squamosa, H. porcellanus, P. nobilis, and T. niloticus are listed as endangered species by International Union for Conservation of Nature.   Keywords - target species, macro-invertebrates, coral cover, coral reefs, reef fish, conservation

The spotted box crab Calappa philargius (Calappidae) is an increasingly consumed species in China, mainly sourced from a claw-only fishery. Being a not well-characterized species in the literature, this study is warranted to inform sustainable management approaches. Here we report on the first in-depth overview on biology and fishery dynamics of C. philargius in the southern Taiwan Strait of China. Whole body crabs (N = 1,009) were collected monthly from January to December 2019 from trawlers, operating in the southern Taiwan Strait; sample collection was absent from May to July because of the national fishing moratorium regulation. Sex ratio, growth pattern, size at maturity and fecundity were estimated. The overall male: female ratio was 1: 1.47, significantly differing from the 1: 1 (p < 0.01); monthly sex ratio variations were also significant (p < 0.01), suggesting possible seasonal sexual segregation. We found the carapace widths (CW) of males were significantly larger than those of females (p < 0.01). Based on the occurrence and percentages of berried females, we identified twin spawning events in January–April and August–October with the overall peak occurring in February. Size at 50% female maturity was 11.47 cm CW. Female absolute fecundity was significantly related to CW via a power function relationship (N = 14, p < 0.01). The estimated average claw yield was 36.28 ± 3.07% of the whole body weight (N = 95), irrespective of sex and size (p > 0.5). Capture and trade data of C. philargius using trawl and trap fishing gears were documented to characterize claw-only fishery dynamics for future research and sustainable use.

Problems associated with non-sustainable use of fossil fuels have led to increased awareness and widespread research into the accessibility of new and renewable energy resources. As the renewable energy, biogas should be widely used for its advantages in environmental friendly, security and efficiency. But factors in policy and environment made the utilization of biogas hard to achieve in cold areas. This article focus on the problem, make conclusions and give advices based on the analysis of the example of China’s rural areas in the north. The exact information was obtained via questionnaire survey, aiming at promoting the utilization of biogas in cold areas.

Law enforcement is widely regarded as a cornerstone to effective natural resource management. Practical guidelines for the optimal use of enforcement measures are lacking particularly in areas protected under sustainable and/or mixed use management regimes and where legal institution are weak. Focusing on the yellow-spotted river turtles (Podocnemis unifilis) along 33 km of river that runs between two sustainable–use reserves in the Brazilian Amazon as an illustrative example, we show that two years of patrols to enforce lawful protection regulations had no effect on nest harvesting. In contrast, during one year when community-based management approaches were enacted harvest levels dropped nearly threefold to a rate (26%) that is likely sufficient for river turtle population recovery. Our findings support previous studies that show how community participation, if appropriately implemented, can facilitate effective natural resource management where law enforcement is limited or ineffective.

Mass timber is a family of Solid Laminate Timber Systems (SLTS) formed from smaller sections of timber connected by glue, mechanical fixings, moisture movement or a combination of methods. These products, which include Structural Composite Lumber, GluLam, Cross Lam, Nail Lam and Dowel Lam (or Brettstapel), have over the past two decades seen an extraordinary upsurge in use internationally. This global phenomenon has been driven by a greater emphasis on the sustainable use of renewable resources and by significant technological developments in the manufacture of SLTS. This research paper considers the merits of each of these products, their manufacturing processes and the corresponding quality assurance requirements necessary for successful project delivery. The paper describes the advantages and barriers to the use of the mass timber and provides an overview of the various aspects to be considered during design for offsite and modular construction. The work presented also provides case studies of how these products have been researched and utilised into live projects in the UK utilising local resource resulting in the formation of new supply chain arrangements. The work further explains the advantages of the respective systems for the given application including information on species selection, connection systems employed and the necessary onsite and offsite management approaches deployed.
