Compounds 4 and 5, including both 4(5)-substituted imidazole or 3-substituted indole units as the entities used in nature, and 2-aminopyridine group as a heterocyclic analogue of the asparagine/glutamine primary amide side chain, were prepared and their binding properties towards carbohydrates were studied. The design of these receptors was inspired by the binding motifs observed in the crystal structures of protein–carbohydrate complexes. 1H NMR spectroscopic titrations in competitive and non-competitive media as well as binding studies in two-phase systems, such as dissolution of solid carbohydrates in apolar media, revealed both highly effective recognition of neutral carbohydrates and interesting binding preferences of these acyclic compounds. Compared to the previously described acyclic receptors, compounds 4 and 5 showed significantly increased binding affinity towards β-galactoside. Both receptors display high β- vs. α-anomer binding preferences in the recognition of glycosides. It has been shown that both hydrogen bonding and interactions of the carbohydrate CH units with the aromatic rings of the receptors contribute to the stabilization of the receptor–carbohydrate complexes. The molecular modeling calculations, synthesis and binding properties of 4 and 5 towards selected carbohydrates are described and compared with those of the previously described receptors.

The catalytic epoxidation of cis-polybutadiene was studied in two-phase systems, CH 2 CI 2/ H 2 O and PhIO (solid)/ CH 2 Cl 2, using chlorochromium(III), chloromanganese(III) and chloroiron(III) tetraphenylporphyrin complexes as catalysts. Comparison of the catalytic activity of these three catalysts showed that the manganese porphyrin is the most suitable catalyst for this reaction. The results are based on reaction product ratios as determined by 1 H NMR . UV-Visible spectroscopy allowed monitoring of the metalloporphyrin evolution during the catalytic reaction.

Poly (ether sulfone) membranes (PHP) were prepared with 25 mol% of 1,2-bis (4-hydroxybenzene)-3,4,5,6-tetraphenylbenzene (BHPTPB). BHPTPB has a conjugated propeller-like nonplanar conformation structure containing the peripheral seven aromatic rings which facilitate the formation of π-π interactions. A series of sulfonated poly (ethersulfone) s (SHP 25) was synthesized with concentrated sulfuric acid. The sulfonation took place selectively on the multiphenyl unit, and simultaneously on the side-chain phenyl groups. Composite membranes were prepared with copolymers and SiO2nanoparticles (20 nm, 4~10%wt). The composite membranes were cast from DMSO. A series of composite membranes structures and characteristic were evaluated by the1H-NMR spectroscopy, and thermal stabilities. The membranes were performed by ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake and proton conductivity.

Sulfonated poly (ethersulfone) s (S-PDHTPEs) were prepared from 4,4-(2,2-diphenylethenylidene) bisphenol (DHTPE), 4,4-sulfonyldiphenol, 4-fluorophenylsulfone using potassium carbonate, and followed sulfonation reaction with conc. sulfuric acid. DHTPE is a conjugated structure, which enables to form planar conformation between aromatic rings, and selectively sufonated on phenyl rings of polymer side chain. The membranes were performed by ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake and proton conductivity as a function of degree of sulfonation.
