Многие иностранные выпускники подготовительных факультетов российских вузов, избравшие в качестве своей будущей специальности профессию стоматолога, не могут продуцировать о ней развёрнутые монологические высказывания на русском языке, общаться на элементарные профессиональные темы и испытывают коммуникативные трудности при лечении зубов в российских поликлиниках. Автор статьи разработал практическое занятие на тему «Здоровые зубы как условие общего здоровья и счастья человека». Материалы ориентироваы на студентов I сертификационного уровня обучения. Они могут быть полезны и для учащихся немедицинских профилей обучения. Many foreign graduates of preparatory faculties of Russian universities, who have chosen the profession of a dentist as their future specialty, cannot produce detailed monologues about it in Russian, communicate on elementary professional topics and experience communication difficulties when treating teeth in Russian polyclinics. The author has developed a practical lesson on the topic Healthy teeth as a condition of general health and human happiness. The lesson is aimed at students of the first certification level of education who are native or secondary native speakers of English. It can also be can be useful for students of non-medical learning profiles, as it influences the attitude of foreigners to their health and contributes to their adaptation in communicative situations related to the sphere of Russian healthcare.

TThe aim of this paper is to offer an overview of how an EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) programme was designed at the University of A Coruña (Spain) to implement courses taught in English by its teaching staff. The final goals of this initiative were twofold: to attract an increasing number of foreign students through mobility or as new admissions; and to promote internationalisation at home for both students and lecturers. Some of the steps taken in this process (from coaching to EMI) are explained as well as the principles on which a particular teaching methodology for non-native speakers of English is based. Content knowledge and a B2 level of English is presupposed, but a further level of teacher professionalism is aspired to, involving commitment, reflection, responsibility. A shift in focus, from teacher- to student-centred learning is required. Instructors should show their students how to learn and guide them along their learning paths. This implies a shift in the original mindset that is strongly rooted in particular teaching traditions. Communicative competence is also a key factor: knowing how to transmit and communicate is at least as important as the material content itself, and lecturers should be good communicators.

Abstract The paper draws upon a study of interaction between staff and non-native speakers of English in the Outpatients Department carried out at the request of a large public hospital. It discusses the nature of communication in the medical setting and the effects of institutionalized models of interaction on patients of both non-English speaking and English-speaking background. An attempt is made to characterize typical language exchanges at various points in patients’ passage through the system and to offer explanations for communication problems arising from selected interactions between patients and hospital staff. Outcomes of these interactions as evidenced by patients’ ability to demonstrate understanding of their medication regimes are also considered. While according cross-cultural factors an important role in communication with non-English speakers, and accepting that NESB patients on account of their limited English may be disadvantaged in the medical encounter, it was concluded that communication difficulties can arise intraculturally as well as cross-culturally and that the differentiated roles of staff and patients constitute the overriding constraint on effective communication. Implications are drawn for the ways in which social interaction between unequal parties is mediated through language.

The emergence of an increasing number of foreign students in Russian universities indicates the importance of the Russian higher education system in the world community. At the same time, a new problem emerged on the agenda — how to train foreigners from abroad with high quality, taking into account their different readiness in mastering the Russian language and different subject training. The article describes the problems that foreign students face when studying informatics at a pedagogical university. The combined profiles, including “Informatics”, of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Mordovian State Pedagogical Institute named after M. E. Evsevjev were the experimental research site. On the example of the “Theoretical Foundations of Informatics” discipline, the ways of teaching informatics are shown. Examples of assignments, including tasks for independent work, for teaching foreign students to informatics at the specified university are given.
