This taxonomic revision of the continental African species of Monanthotaxis (Annonaceae) includes 79 species and one variety. Thirteen new species (M. aestuaria, M. bidaultii, M. confusa, M. glabra, M. hexamera, M. mcphersonii, M. quasilanceolata, M. sterilis, M. submontana, M. suffruticosa, M. ursus, M. vulcanica and M. wieringae) are described and 5 new combinations (M. biglandulosa, M. kenyensis, M. ochroleuca, M. pynaertii and M. seretii) are made. The genus Monanthotaxis consists of lianas or lianescent shrubs. It occurs throughout forests in tropical Africa and the highest species diversity is found in the Western Central African rain forests. A key for flowering material is provided, just like a synoptic key including 45 characters. Topics included in the revision are the history of the taxonomy of Monanthotaxis, morphology, leaf anatomy, floral biology, distribution and habitat, phylogeny and finally ethnobotany and phytochemistry. Each species is fully described including synonymy, notes on distribution, habitat & ecology, vernacular names, uses and a preliminary IUCN conservation status. Distribution maps are provided for all species, illustrations for 48 species and photographs of 22 species. An index of exsiccatae and an index of the scientific names are included at the end.

The southern African species of Megachile (Creightonella) are revised. Twelve valid species are recognised, one of whichis new, Megachile serrula sp. n., and four are only known from the female. Ten new synonymies are recorded. Megachilecognata var. claripennis Friese, Megachile natalensis Friese are synonymized with Megachile cognata Smith. Megachileconsanguinea zamelaena Cockerell is synonymized with Megachile ianthoptera Smith. Megachile hopilitis Vachal,Megachile vanderysti Cockerell, Megachile triangulifera kivuicola Cockerell, and Megachile heptadonta Cockerell aresynonymized with Megachile angulata Smith. Four new lectotypes were designated; they are Megachile natalensis Friese,M. discolor Smith, M. cornigera Friese and M. braunsiana Friese. The nomenclatorial history of each species is documented, diagnoses are given, food plants are recorded and distribution maps are provided.

The genera Tetraena Maxim. and Zygophyllum L. (Zygophyllaceae) present different morphological characters, viz. growth habit, leaf features, flower traits and fruit shape, and have a high diversity of species in Africa, Australia and Asia. Six species of Tetraena [T. alba (L.f.) Beier & Thulin, T. coccinea (L) Beier & Thulin, T. decumbens (Delile) Beier & Thulin, T. hamiensis (Schwein f.) Beier & Thulin, T. propinqua (Decne.) Ghaz. & Osborne and T. simplex (L.) Beier & Thulin], and one species of Zygophyllum (Z. fabago L.) have been identified in Saudi Arabia, most of which grow in sandy soils and saline habitats as shrubs and herbs. One new endemic variety (T. alba var. arabica Alzahrani & Albokhari) along with four new combinations [T. alba var. amblyocarpa (Baker) Alzahrani & Albokhari, T. hamiensis var. qatarensis (Hadidi ex Beier & Thulin) Alzahrani & Albokhari, T. hamiensis var. mandavillei (Hadidi ex Beier & Thulin) Alzahrnai & Albokhari, and T. propinqua subsp. migahidii (Hadidi ex Beier & Thulin) Alzahrani & Albokhari] are proposed. Descriptions, illustrations, distribution maps and a key for identification of the taxa are presented. Conservation status has been proposed for the new variety and combinations.Bangladesh J. A taxonomic revision of the cosmopolitan genus Cardamine is presented for New Zealand. Previous systematic research and the taxonomic history of Cardamine in New Zealand is reviewed, and a phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences shows most of the species of Cardamine in New Zealand and Australia are closely related. Forty one taxa indigenous to New Zealand are recognised, with thirty-one species newly named and described, ten previously named taxa are accepted, including C. depressa with two subspecies and a new name is provided for one species. An additional four species are accepted as naturalised in New Zealand. Descriptions are presented for all taxa, along with information on distribution, habitats and conservation status. All taxa are illustrated, distribution maps provided, and a dichotomous key presented to assist with identification.

A taxonomic monograph of a re-circumscribed Leandra sect. Leandra is presented. The new circumscription is based on a previous phylogenetic hypothesis, and diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. Four new combinations to Leandra are proposed, one from Clidemia (L. capilliflora) and three from Ossaea (L. capitata, L. cogniauxii and L. loligomorpha). Additionally, eight species are treated as synonyms for the first time, and 15 lectotypes are designated. A review of the 17 recognized species, including descriptions, synonymy, illustrations and distribution maps, is provided. This work also includes an overview of general morphology, leaf and flower anatomy, phenology and geographical distribution. Species with a history of taxonomic problems and/or with distinctive morphotypes are further investigated with morphometrics tools.

Presented here is a taxonomic revision of the Neotropical palm genus Syagrus (Arecaceae, Arecoideae, Cocoseae, Attaleinae), which is mostly from South America and primarily from Brazil. The history of the genus is reviewed. The revision includes a key, a complete list of synonymy, species descriptions, a list of specimens, distribution maps, color plates, and a conservation assessment of each species. Included herein are 65 species, 2 subspecies, and 14 natural hybrids. Of these palms, one is new (Syagrus pimentae); three are new combinations (S. cataphracta, S. elata, S. × dickensonii); and two have changed their status (S. graminifolia subsp. graminifolia and S. graminifolia subsp. glazioviana). Of the fourteen naturally occurring hybrids, eleven have hybrid names and three do not. This revision is an important contribution to the taxonomy and identification of Syagrus species from South America and the Caribbean, and is the culmination of many years of lab and fieldwork.

This is the first attempt to provide a taxonomic revision of a subgenus of Baccharis according to a phylogenetic framework, and under no geographic constraint. The recircumscription of Baccharis subgen. Tarchonanthoides involves the synonymization of Lanugothamnus, and the exclusion of Baccharis sect. Coridifoliae in order to keep the subgenus monophyletic. Other taxonomic changes are: Baccharis psammophila is confirmed as a synonym of B. gnaphalioides, and B. anabelae is a synonym of B. phylicifolia; the application of the latter name along with B. leucopappa and B. uleana is clarified. A lectotype is designated for the name B. uleana. Two recircumscribed sections, five new series and 13 species are accepted within the subgenus which diversified mainly in open vegetation types of southeastern South America in Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. General morphological descriptions of the infrageneric taxa are provided, as well as a taxonomic key, descriptions, data on etymology, distribution and habitats, phenology, conservation status, ethnobotany and vernacular names, and a list of specimens examined, line drawings, pictures and distribution maps for all accepted species.

Dissochaeta is a plant genus of woody climbers, classified in the tribe Dissochaeteae (Melastomataceae). The taxonomic history of the genus is complicated and includes some allied genera like Dalenia, Diplectria, Macrolenes and Omphalopus. Most of them are already regarded as synonyms of Dissochaeta except for Macrolenes which is considered a separate genus here as well. Dissochaeta is characterised by its scrambling habit, interpetiolar outgrowths, 4-merous flowers, dimorphic stamens and berry-like fruits. A taxonomic revision of Dissochaeta is presented, which includes references, a complete list of synonyms, detailed morphological descriptions of the species and an identification key, as well as information on the distribution, habitat and ecology, vernacular names, notes and lists of examined specimens. Fifty four species and two varieties of Dissochaeta are recognised. We designate several lectotypes, propose eleven new combinations and we describe one new species and one new variety.

AbstractThe conservation status of threatened taxa may be obfuscated by the detection of cryptic species complexes, in both vertebrate and invertebrate species. African dwarf crocodiles (Osteolaemusspp.) are hunted throughout their range but their conservation status is unknown. Few population assessments have been carried out and there has been a taxonomic revision of the number of species in the genus. The similar morphologies ofOsteolaemus tetraspisandOsteolaemus osbornipose a challenge for conservation in Cameroon, where they are still managed as a single species. Nocturnal spotlight surveys were conducted in three regions during August–November 2010 and December 2011–February 2012 to provide population assessments ofO. tetraspisandO. osborniand raise awareness of the two species in Cameroon. The mean encounter rates ofO. tetraspisandO. osborniwere 1.02 ± SD 1.34 (65 individuals in 39 surveys) and 0.61 ± SD 0.38 (three in four surveys) crocodiles per km, respectively. TheO. tetraspispopulation comprised juveniles predominantly and had a male-biased sex ratio. The fewO. osbornidetected comprised both adults and juveniles. Both species are threatened in Cameroon, based on low encounter rates, young population structures and the threats of habitat loss and hunting pressure. This study provides distribution maps and serves as a baseline to quantify population trends and inform conservation strategies.

A taxonomic revision of Calytrix Labill., an Australian endemic genus of Myrtaceae, tribe Chamelaucieae, is presented. Lhotskya Schauer is reduced to a synonym of Calytrix. Seventy-two species are recognized of which the following 22 are described as new: C. amethystina, C. carinata, C. chrysantha, C. divergens, C. duplistipulata, C. eneabbensis, C. erosipetala, C. formosa, C. gurulmundensis, C. gypsophila, C. habrantha, C. islensis, C. microcoma, C. parvivallis, C. paucicostata, C. platycheiridia, C. praecipua, C. rupestris, C. similis, C. truncatifolia, C. verruculosa and C. warburtonensis. Two species comprise two subspecies each, of which one, C. simplex subsp. suboppositifolia, is also described as new. Other than autonyms the following new names result from the transfer of Calycothrix and Lhotskya species to Calytrix, and/ or changes in taxonomic rank: C, acuttfolia, C, breviseta subsp. stipulosa, C. brownii, C. drummondii, C. glaberrima, C. harvestiana, C. merrelliana, C. nematoclada, C. purpurea, C. smeatoniana and C. sylvana. Distinctive features of the morphology are discussed. A new term, cheiridium, is proposed for an apparently adaptive structure formed from the peduncle and persistent, connate bracteoles. Other biological aspects that are discussed briefly include floral biology, fruit and dispersal, and geography. An informal infrageneric classification, based largely upon floral features, is outlined. New taxa are illustrated. Distribution maps are provided for all taxa.

The genus Pelargonium (Geraniaceae) includes ca. 281 species, organised into 16 sections and four subgenera. Since the last revision of the genus by Knuth in 1912, recent revisions have been completed for all of the currently recognised sections of the genus with the exception of three, sections Ciconium, Otidia and Peristera. Pelargonium sect. Peristera is lectotypified, and a taxonomic revision of the southern African species of this section is presented, recognising 11 species, of which one, P. sessiliflorum, is described as new. An identification key is provided along with nomenclature, descriptions, distribution maps, habitat information, and conservation notes for the 11 recognised species, synonymising nine names.
