Hard disk drives continue to increase the data storage density. The parameters of the head slider flying attitude must satisfy very strict performance goals. This paper focuses on the topic of the simulated annealing algorithm when it is applied to the problem of slider air bearing design in hard disk drives. The objective is to minimize the static flying height, to keep the pitch angle within a reasonable range, and to minimize the roll angle. The design variables include recess depth and geometry configuration of the slider air bearing surface. A typical tri-pad slider was taken as the physical model to demonstrate the validity of the optimal algorithm. Results show that simulated annealing is efficient for the optimization of the slider air bearing design. The static air bearing characteristics were enhanced significantly.

This study is dedicated to evaluate the performance of an automatic ball-type balancer system (ABS) installed in optical disk drives (ODDs) with consideration of the relative torsional motion between the ODD case and the spindle-disk-ABS-turntable system, noting that the turntable is the supporting plate structure for disk, pickup, and spindle motor inside the ODD. To this end, a complete dynamic model of the ABS considering the torsional motion is established with assuming finite torsional stiffness of the damping washers, which provides suspension of the spindle-disk-ABS-turntable system to the ODD case. Considering the benchmark case of a pair of balancing balls in an ABS, the method of multiple scales is then applied to formulate a scaled model for finding all possible steady-state solutions of ball positions and analyzing corresponding stabilities. The results are used to predict the levels of residual vibration, with which the performance of the ABS can then be reevaluated. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify theoretical results. It is deduced from both analytical and numerical results that the spindle speed of an ODD could be operated above both primary translational and secondary torsional resonances in order to guarantee stabilization of the desired balanced solution for a substantial vibration reduction.

Multi-objective optimal design of sandwich composite laminates consisting of high stiffness and expensive surface layers and low-stiffness and inexpensive core layer is addressed in this paper. The object is to determine ply angles and number of surface layers and core thickness in such way that natural frequency is maximized with minimal material cost and weight. A simulated annealing algorithm with finite element method is used for simultaneous cost and weight minimization and frequency maximization. The proposed procedure is applied to Graphite-Epoxy/Glass-Epoxy and Graphite-epoxy/Aluminum sandwich laminates and results are obtained for various boundary conditions and aspect ratios. Results show that this technique is useful in designing of effective, competitive and light composite structures.

In this paper a design methodology of a magnetohydrodynamic pump is proposed. The methodology is based on direct interpretation of the design problem as an optimization problem. The simulated annealing method is used for an optimal design of a DC MHD pump. The optimization procedure uses an objective function which can be the minimum of the mass. The constraints are both of geometrics and electromagnetic in type. The obtained results are reported.
