Peculiar technologies on the update of topographic map linear objects to scale 1:500–1:2000 are presented. Due to that resulted peculiarities make aerial photographs, carrying out digital aerial triangulation, renewing the topographical plan. The article deals with the submitted example of the topographic plan exhibiting the renovated railway in the city of Vilnius. The updating has been made on the aerial photograph on 1:4000 scale with the photogrammetric instrument PlaniComp P3. The objects possessing no identification in photogrammetry are measured by means of a geodetic method. The redacting varied objects in a database are drawn with AutoCadsoftware. On the basis of this work it is possible to state that for fast and exact updating of topographic plans a progressive photogrammetric method is recommended. It is advised the edition data base to be made by the same operator who made photogrammetric work. The objects are visible in an aerial photo, but no identifying photogrammetry should be applied locally. Digital, renewed data are necessary for drawing up geo information systems (GIS) of the railway, to be able to make fast decisions of urgent problems.

A variant of solving the problem of reducing the informative intensity of the video stream coming from the aircraft without loss of its efficiency and reliability is discussed. The analysis of aerial photographs, which constitute informative redundancy and subsequently complicate the process of its interpretation is made. The implementation of decryption coding technology for aerial photography is disclosed. A model for the classification of informative segments of an aerial photograph is considered. The direction of reducing the information redundancy of aerial photographs with preservation of key information to its interpretation is proposed. The substantiation of a method of exact allocation of highly informative segments from the whole aerial photograph, which carry the maximum information objects in the interests of interpretation is given. A technological concept of an effective syntactic description of the elements of sufficiently informative segments of an aerial photo is taken into account, which takes into account the characteristics of the transformant components of the discrete cosine transform. Moreover, such a concept is aimed at maximum preservation of key information to decipher the whole aerial photo. A method is constructed for accurately isolating highly informative segments from the entire aerial photograph, which carry the maximum information objects in the interest of deciphering. This will allow to allocate and completely transfer not distorted key information to the deciphering of the whole aerial photo. That, in turn, will shorten the time and increase the probability of correct interpretation. A promising technological concept of an effective syntactic description of the elements of sufficiently informative segments of an aerial photograph that takes into account the characteristics of the DCT transformant components. The scheme for evaluating the significance of transformants of an aerial photograph informative segments is considered. It is substantiated that the proposed version will provide simultaneous reduction of the information necessary for presentation of service data and will create prerequisites for effective reduction of informative intensity of the whole segment of the aerial reconnaissance

Semarang City Public Works Department is a state-owned enterprise that works in the area of public services in the city of Semarang. Most of the technological conditions in the Public Works Department are still in manual data management, which is hampering business processes from going well. Therefore this research was conducted to design an Information System at the Semarang City Public Works Department using the Enterprise Architecture Planning (EAP) method which includes a SWOT analysis and Value Chain analysis. The existing framework in the Enterprise Architecture Planning (EAP) method can help align the data architecture and application architecture to get the expected results, which is achieving the business objectives of the City of Semarang Public Works Department so that business functions can run by the desired business processes. This research resulted in several proposals for the development of Information Systems and Information Technology in organizations including the development of several applications in the next 5 years.

Even though the general configuration of the Poverty Point site has been known for over forty years, the entire site was mapped for the first time in 1999–2000. In this paper we examine how Poverty Point has been portrayed in the archaeological literature. Tracings of stereoscopic aerial photographs were used to construct previous maps of the site. Features that could not be traced because of tree cover were interpolated. Succeeding representations of the site show different features and emphasize the symmetrical form of the site, including the presence of ridges separated by aisles. The 1999–2000 map demonstrates that earlier images of the site overemphasize earthworm symmetry. Our data suggest that the northern aisle does not exist and may have been introduced into earlier maps in order to complete a hypothesized regular site plan. Images of a site like Poverty Point are powerful representations of a perceived reality. For example, existing maps of Poverty Point have been used to bolster claims that the site represents a "great town," with a large population and some kind of centralized leadership. Despite a considerable history of research at Poverty Point map data alone cannot and probably will never provide sufficient evidence to support or reject such a claim. While mapping alone cannot answer questions about the nature of site organization or social behavior, differences between existing images and the current topographic map underscore the need to view maps and pictures of Poverty Point as a means for generating testable hypotheses, rather than an end unto itself.

AbstractThis study uses older topographic maps made from high-oblique aerial photographs for glacier elevation change studies. We compare the 1936/38 topographic map series of Svalbard (Norwegian Polar Institute) to a modern digital elevation model from 1990. Both systematic and random components of elevation error are examined by analyzing non-glacier elevation difference points. The 1936/38 photographic aerial survey is examined to identify areas with poor data coverage over glaciers. Elevation changes are analyzed for seven regions in Svalbard (~5000 km2), where significant thinning was found at glacier fronts, and elevation increases in the upper parts of the accumulation areas. All regions experience volume losses and negative geodetic balances, although regional variability exists relating to both climate and topography. Many surges are apparent within the elevation change maps. Estimated volume change for the regions is –1.59±0.07km3 a–1 (ice equivalent) for a geodetic annual balance of –0.30ma–1w.e., and the glaciated area has decreased by 16% in the 54 year time interval. The 1936–90 data are compared to modern elevation change estimates in the southern regions, to show that the rate of thinning has increased dramatically since 1990.

<p class="p1">Keys consisting of variable-length chamcter strings from the front and rear of surnames, derived by analysis of author names in a particular data base, am used to provide approximate representations of author names. When combined in appropriate ratios, and used together with keys for each of the first two initials of personal names, they provide a high degree of discrimination in search.</p> <p class="p1">Methods for optimization of key-sets are described, and the performance of key-sets varying in size between <span class="s1">150 </span>and <span class="s1">300 </span>is determined at file sizes of up to <span class="s1">50,000 </span>name entries. The effects of varying the proportions of the queries present in the file are also examined. The results obtained with fixed-length keys are compared with those for variable-length keys, showing the latter to be greatly superior.</p> <p class="p1">Implications of the work for a variety of types of information systems are discussed.</p>

Integral to some conceptualizations of the “smart city” is the adoption of web-based technology to support civic engagement and improve information systems for local government decision support. Yet there is little to no literature on the “smartness” of gathering information about historic places within municipal information systems. This chapter provides three case studies of technologically augmented planning processes that incorporated citizens as sensors of data about historic places. The first case study is of SurveyLA, a massive effort of the city of Los Angeles to comprehensively survey over 880,000 parcels for historic resources. A second case study involves Motor City Mapping, an effort to identify the condition of buildings in Detroit, Michigan and a parallel historical survey conducted by volunteers. In Austin, Texas, a university-based research team designed a municipal web tool called the Austin Historical Survey Wiki. This chapter offers insights into these prior efforts to augment planning processes with “digitized memory,” web-based technology, and public engagement.
