In their survey of American Academy of Pediatrics on adolescent abortion published in March 1993, Fleming and O'Connor state that 48.8% supported parental notification, 43.3% did not favor access to abortion for all of the reasons identified in the questionnaire, and 35.4% believed abortion should clearly be restricted in some circumstances.
They concluded that these numbers provide a "mandate" for the Academy to support legislation encouraging adolescent abortion. Rather, it seems clear to us that these numbers indicate that it is inappropriate for the Academy to take sides on a political issue over which its membership is so obviously divided. There is no consensus, and no "mandate."
