Abstract Given a square matrix A, replacing each of its nonzero entries with the symbol * gives its zero-nonzero pattern. Such a pattern is said to be spectrally arbitrary when it carries essentially no information about the eigenvalues of A. A longstanding open question concerns the smallest possible number of nonzero entries in an n × n spectrally arbitrary pattern. The Generalized 2n Conjecture states that, for a pattern that meets an appropriate irreducibility condition, this number is 2n. An example of Shitov shows that this irreducibility is essential; following his technique, we construct a smaller such example. We then develop an appropriate algebraic condition and apply it computationally to show that, for n ≤ 7, the conjecture does hold for ℝ, and that there are essentially only two possible counterexamples over ℂ. Examining these two patterns, we highlight the problem of determining whether or not either is in fact spectrally arbitrary over ℂ. A general method for making this determination for a pattern remains a major goal; we introduce an algebraic tool that may be helpful.

Thermoelastic plate model with a control term in the thermal equation is considered. The main result in this paper is that with thermal control, locally distributed within the interior and square integrable in time and space, any finite energy solution can be driven to zero at the control timeT.

In the 1990s, Habiro defined Ck-move of oriented links for each natural number k [5]. A Ck-move is a kind of local move of oriented links, and two oriented knots have the same Vassiliev invariants of order [les ] k−1 if and only if they are transformed into each other by Ck-moves. Thus he has succeeded in deducing a geometric conclusion from an algebraic condition. However, this theorem appears only in his recent paper [6], in which he develops his original clasper theory and obtains the theorem as a consequence of clasper theory. We note that the ‘if’ part of the theorem is also shown in [4], [9], [10] and [16], and in [13] Stanford gives another characterization of knots with the same Vassiliev invariants of order [les ] k−1.

We study the internal exact null controllability of a nonlinear heat equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. The method used combines the Kakutani fixed-point theorem and the Carleman estimates for the backward adjoint linearized system. The result extends to the case of boundary control.
