Smart City is the product of accelerated development of the new generation information technology and knowledge-based economy, based on the network combination of the Internet, telecommunications network, broadcast network, wireless broadband network and other sensors networks where Internet of Things technology (IoT) as its core. Traffic congestion caused by vehicle is an alarming problem at a global scale and it has been growing exponentially. Searching for a parking space is a routine (and often frustrating) activity for many people in cities around the world. This search burns about one million barrels of the world's oil every day. A smart Parking system typically obtains information about available parking spaces in a particular geographic area and process is real-time to place vehicles at available positions. In our proposed chapter, we will be discussing the advanced features of IoT in order to development an intelligent parking management system in a smart city i.e. called as Smart Parking system.

The city is transforming into the smart city using information and communication technology (ICT), and the major role in economic development is building an infrastructure to enable greater connectivity between citizen service, energy, economics, and government. A smart city can monitor the real-world scenario in real time and support the intelligent services to both locals and travelers. Due to urbanization, people move from village to city. Increase the population in city also causes an increase in vehicles. Here, parking the vehicle securely is a challenging problem. In a smart parking system, all the devices are connected to the internet. Hackers and third parties easily access the user data or sensitive data. Smart parking system application controls the traffic, air pollution, and city functions making it easy to park the vehicle and reduce accidents. Many of the problems arise in the security and privacy of the sensitive data. In this chapter, the authors discuss security and privacy issues in smart parking systems using IoT.

The smart city is not possible without a smart road. It can provide citizens with smart mobility. In order to overcome the complications handled by the parking system, smart parking has been developed. A model IoT-based parking system that uses a unified component called parking meter to address the issues as well as to provide smart parking management throughout the city is proposed in this chapter.

With the vast growing influx of population in the developed, industrially and technologically sound urban cities, an urgent need to make the cities smart is surmounted. The cities are made smart utilizing data sharing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, analytics, and thousands of RFID tags and sensors. One of the significant concerns of today's smart cities is the growing need to manage the vehicles on-road as well as to create sufficient and well-managed parking lots to prevent urban areas from traffic congestion. This leads to a call for highly automated parking management system self-sufficient in guiding the driver to an available parking space in the nearby area. In this paper, a real-time prototype of the smart parking system (S.P system) based on Internet of Things (IoT) is discussed. The proposed smart parking system works on an electronic device that collects the parking availability status and assists drivers in finding and selecting the desired parking space among the available parking spaces that effectively reduces the traffic problems and mismanagement across the cities to a great extent.

Humanity is currently experiencing one of the short periods of transition thanks to novel sensing solutions for smart cities that bring the future to today. Overpopulation of cities demands the development of solid strategic plannings that uses infrastructure, innovation, and technology to adapt to rapid changes. To improve mobility in cities with a larger and larger vehicle fleet, a novel sensing solution that is the cornerstone of a smart parking system, the smart vehicular presence sensor (SPIN-V, in its Spanish abbreviation), is presented. The SPIN-V is composed of a small single-board computer, distance sensor, camera, LED indicator, buzzer, and battery and devoted to obtain the status of a parking space. This smart mobility project involves three main elements, namely the SPIN-V, a mobile application, and a monitoring center, working together to monitor, control, process, and display the parking space information in real-time to the drivers. In addition, the design and implementation of the three elements of the complete architecture are presented.

Abstract Smart City as a concept presupposes using new information and communication technologies in order to improve the quality of life within a particular geographic area. There are six different pillars in the frame of this concept and their one purpose is to achieve better efficiency of city operations. Smart mobility and transport are some of them. The efforts of traditional cities to become smart are not easily and quickly achievable. Numerous traffic solutions have already been implemented in different cities all over the world that make the ‘jump’ from traditional city to smart city. This paper provides an overview of the ‘smart’ transport solutions that have been implemented in the city of Skopje as a traditional city, which is on its way to becoming a smart city. The presented smart solutions are related to traffic management and control area and are aimed at alleviating traffic problems. The focus is on non-motorized solutions, e-vehicles, adaptive traffic control systems and public transport solutions. Several aims have been set in this paper – to promote the achievements of the municipality of Skopje aimed at transforming Skopje into a smart city in a transport area; to present its functionality, and to point out the disadvantages related to law regulations and the interconnection of all stakeholders involved. Finally, the idea is to provide a starting point for future research and to recommend future steps in this direction in the city of Skopje.

One of the endless problem in Jakarta is the potential loss of DKI Jakarta regional government revenue related to parking fees. This study was made to overcome this problem by proposing the utilization of IoT and Big Data technology for smart parking system as a contribution to the Jakarta Smart City plan. Actual real time data of parking management by utilizing IoT brings out the collaboration of tools and technologies which may provide controlling and monitoring features to smart parking system. Furthermore, big data technology allows DKI Jakarta government easily predicts the potential revenue from each parking location spread throughout the city. This paper will discuss about the requirements, system architecture, detection methods and technologies based on commodity hardware and a group of Hadoop MR Platforms to investigate the ability of intelligent parking platforms to process and analyze large data in Jakarta

With the development of smart meters, like Internet of Things (IoT), various kinds of electronic devices are equipped with each smart city. The several aspects of smart cities are accessible and these technologies enable us to be smarter. The utilization of the smart systems is very quick and valuable source to fulfill the requirement of city development. There are interconnection between various IoT devices and huge amount of data is generated when they communicate each other over the internet. It is very challenging task to effectively integrate the IoT services and processing big data. Therefore, a system for smart city development is proposed in this paper which is based on the IoT utilizing the analytics of big data. A complete system is proposed which includes various types of IoT-based smart systems like smart home, vehicular networking, and smart parking etc., for data generation. The Hadoop ecosystem is utilized for the implementation of the proposed system. The evaluation of the system is done in terms of throughput and processing time. The proposed technique is 20% to 65% better than the existing techniques in terms of time required for processing. In terms of obtained throughput, the proposed technique outperforms the existing technique by 20% to 60%.
