Financial statements are an important tool when it comes to determining the level of success of a company's management and setting its market value. Nevertheless, company managers may sometimes try to reflect the company's financial results differently. Strategic methods, used by the company to deliberately change the earnings they gain by using the flexibility provided by the accounting system, are called earnings management practices. This chapter examines the examples of a public company that is traded on the Istanbul Stock Exchange for the purpose of determining earnings management practices under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Given the results of the study, it is possible to say from the earnings management practices that the company only benefited from those in the legal framework.

In the year 2016, all commercial banks in Iraq were obliged to switch from the application of the local unified accounting system to the application of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) to improve the quality of accounting information and make it relevant for decision-making. The objective of the research is to measure earnings management in a number of banks which applied IFRSs at the end of the financial year 2016 through their application on a sample of banks for the years (2012-2013, 2014, 2015, 2016). The results were compared with the measurement of earnings management under the application of the unified accounting system (before the adoption of IFRSs) and after the application of the (IFRSs). The researcher concluded that the percentage of earnings management in the years in which the banks applied the unified accounting system is very close to its percentage in the case of the application of IFRSs, which shows that the application of IFRSs did not change the percentage of earnings management in banks.

The issue of the application of IFRS as a standard can encourage a decrease in the level of earnings management in a company so that the application of IFRS in financial statements has the purpose of providing reports that are faithful in nature so that the report users are reliable. The purpose of this study is to show a comparison of earnings management practices that occurred before and after the implementation of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in Automotive and Component companies registered in the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) for the period of 2009-2014. The data used in this study are secondary data in the form of the company’s financial statements. The variables in this study are earnings management before and after IFRS implementation. The sampling method in this study was purposive sampling with a sample of 12 automotive and component companies on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. Discretionary accruals of Modified Jones Model is used to measure the earnings management. The analytical method used for hypothesis testing is Paired Sample T-test, a different test for two paired samples. The results of this study indicate that earnings management in the period after IFRS convergence was different than earnings management in the period before IFRS convergence in Automotive and Component companies. However, IFRS convergence has not guaranteed a decline in earnings management practices in Automotive and Component companies.  Keywords: Earnings Management, International Financial Reporting Standard, Discretionary Accrual

There are two objectives of this study, first,it is to examine and compare the accounting quality in pre-and post-implementations IFRS from the viewpoint of investors. Second ,is to identify the differences in the accounting quality between the shariah compliant and non-shariah compliant companies in pre-and post-implementations of IFRS. Using  2169 firm-year observations from firms listed on the Bursa Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange over the period of 2008  to 2016, the result shows that the implementation of MFRS have reduced the firms’ earnings management. However, this study provides new arguments that Shariah-complaints firms in Malaysia do not necessary have greater incentives to report high-quality reporting based on the investor perspectives.  Our evidence thus help to explains the different impact on IFRS adoption on accounting quality in Malaysia and shariah complaint compnaies.

Here, the link between the mandatory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and Real Earnings Management (REM), as well as Accrual Earnings Management (AEM), will be examined for non-financial listed firms in the London Stock Exchange. Robust regression analysis of the mandatory IFRS adoption will be conducted on the panel data, as well as earnings management using three AEM models and three REM models. Mixed results with respect to the qualities of AEM and REM were notably garnered, with mandatory IFRS adoption positively relating to the Roychowdhury of abnormal cash flow and the Roychowdhury of abnormal production. Meanwhile, the Roychowdhury of abnormal discretionary expenses, standard Jones, and Kothari negatively related to mandatory IFRS adoption, whilst modified Jones showed an insignificant relation to mandatory IFRS adoption. Changes in IFRS adoption and guidelines for UK firms may have an impact on AEM and REM, and, as predicted, mandatory IFRS adoption mostly affects the Kothari model followed by the standard Jones model as proxies for accounting earnings quality.

The main purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) adoption and Audit Quality (AQ) on Earnings Management (EM) practices in Saudi Arabia listed firms. EM is measured by the discretionary accrual using Healy (1985) and Kothari, Leone, and Wasley (2005) models. The research sample contains 16 Saudi listed firms during the period from 2014 to 2019. Statistical analysis including t-test and linear regression were used to test the research hypotheses. The investigation indicates that there is a negative relationship between IFRS adoption and EM practices, especially if it is combined with AQ, while it found a positive relationship between firms’ size and accrual EM, and no significant impact of AQ on firms’ debt ratio and EM practices. The importance of these results lies in providing clear evidence that the adoption of IFRS in developing countries has helped reduce earnings manipulation practices, which contributes to gaining confidence in Saudi firms and thus attracting many foreign investments.

The study aimed to clarify the concept and importance of the relationship between the structure of ownership and the choice of accounting policies and their reflection on the market value in light of international financial reporting standards for banks listed in the Iraq Stock Exchange. Eleven banks were selected for the period from 2010 to 2019. The results of the study concluded that there is a direct relationship between the percentage of administrative ownership weighted by accounting conservatism and the market value of the research sample banks. This was before and after the application of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), which indicates that the application of the standards did not limit the management's behavior towards the accounting conservatism policy in order to increase the market value.

In light of the worldwide spreading requirements related to the disclosure of non-financial information, which are aligning to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) developed by the United Nations (UN) in 2015, the study aims to analyse the influence of sustainability and other non-financial reporting on companies’ engagement in earnings management practices, through a pre-post adoption of European Directive 2014/95/EU comparative analysis for firms listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BSE) in the period 2015-2019. To conduct the investigation, the research involves the assessment and analysis of three earnings management metrics resulted by running multiple linear regression models on a sample of 31 companies listed on BSE. Research findings emphasise a decrease in the use of income smoothing practices by sampled companies in the post-adoption period 2017-2019, compared to the period preceding the implementation of the EU directive related to mandatory disclosure of non-financial information, 2015-2016. Thus, firms characterised by a higher transparency in terms of sustainability reporting are less inclined to engage in earnings management practices. This research complements the literature in the field of sustainability reporting and earnings management, providing empirical evidence on the significance and impact of publishing non-financial information.
