Critical Factors in the Development of Executive Systems-Leveraging the Dashboard Approach

Based on the Rockart’s critical success factor (CSF) approach, this chapter puts forward a practical method to guide the development of executive information systems (EIS) in organizations. This method extends the current theory of EIS by using the concept of the dashboard of information to show how an enterprise-wide approach to the development of more effective decision support for managers can deliver tangible benefits without requiring the time-consuming and single-decision focus of the traditional development methods. This method also attempts to leverage the latest computing technologies now available for the development of such systems, notably graphical user interfaces (GUI), data warehousing (DW) and OLAP. The proposed approach is illustrated by examples of dashboard developments, which show how managers should carry out the analysis and development of such a system in their own organizations, business units or functional areas.

A critical success factor for Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs), and for Privacy-Enhancing Identity Management in particular, will be user-friendly and intelligible user interfaces that are legally compliant and convey trust. Such user interfaces have to meet challenges such as the user-friendly representation of complex PET concepts (such as “pseudonyms”, “unlinkabilty” or “anonymous credentials”) that are unfamiliar to many users, the provision of security, the enforcement of legal privacy principles, such as informed consent or transparency, as well as the mediation of reliable trust to the end users. In this paper, we will discuss such challenges for usable privacy-enhancing identity management and will provide some HCI guidelines for addressing those challenges.

Much effort and research has concentrated on the need to formulate and implement business strategy, and the need to monitor performance against strategic plans. This paper, based on research carried out from July to September 1990, identifies the methodologies which organizations applied to define performance indicators presented on their Executive Information Systems and if these indicators helped steer the organizations towards their strategic objectives. Organizations applied either a critical success factor, an alternative top-down, or an evolutionary/prototype methodology to build their EISs. Unfortunately, not one organization which took part in the research modelled its EIS on its overall business strategy, thus limiting the use of their EIS to that of a glorified fire extinguisher rather than using it to help bridge the gap between formulating and implementing a business strategy.

Pembangunan e-Government sudah menjadi komitmen pemerintah sebagaimana ditetapkan pada Inpres 3/2003 tentang Kebijakan dan Strategi Nasional Pengembangan E-Government. Namun kebijakan pemerintah ini belum sepenuhnya berjalan di pemerintahan lokal sehingga menjadikan e-Government sebagai ujung tombak pemerintahan tidak dapat berjalan dengan baik. Resistensi terhadap perubahan adalah salah satu faktor penghambat dalam pengembangan e-Government. Undang-Undang No.6 Tahun 2014 Tentang Desa menyatakan penyelenggaraan pemerintahan desa dengan memanfaatkan Teknologi Informasi bisa dilakukan melalui e-Government Desa. Diperlukan kajian mendalam terhadap model yang cocok untuk e-Government desa ini. Proses identifikasi terhadap kebutuhan e-Government Desa dilakukan dengan analisis Critical Success Factor (CSF). Hasil analisis menghasilkan empat tahapan model yang terbagi atas dimensi kompleksitas teknologi dan organisasi dengan tingkat integrasi data dan informasi. Sedangkan hasil dari future portfolio dari perkembangan model ini menggunakan McFarlan’s Analyst Grid sehingga modul strategic, high potential, support, dan key operational dapat dijabarkan. Innovation plays a major role and is a crucial component of the organization’s growth. Creativity and innovation have become increasingly popular as key contributors to firm success in the last few decades or so. The incoming technology of Industrial Revolution 4.0 forced many companies to be innovative to compete in technological era. However, many SMEs are not ready and less innovative. Furthermore, there is lack of research focus on HPWS implementation amongst SMEs indicates that further research must be conducted along these lines. Therefore, this study aim to investigate the effect of high performance work system (HPWS) towards innovative work behaviour of employees in small and medium enterprises. This study used quantitative approach to identify the critical success factor of high performance work systems (HPWS) in Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SME) manufacturing industry. This study used descriptive analysis to analyze the data. Five-point Likert scales items ranging from (1-strongly disagree, 5 – strongly agree) employed for measuring the HPWS. Therefore, the total of 81 items survey questions were adapted to obtain the respondents for SME manufacturing industry. Reliability analysis shows that all the HPWS dimensions have very good reliability with Cronbach’s alpha value range from 0.884 to 0.976. According to Tang et al (2014), Cronbach’s alpha range between 0.70 and 0.80 considered as good reliability whereby 0.80 and 0.90 considered as very good reliability. Result also showed that selective staffing has the highest mean score followed by employee participation, which are 3.951 and 3.833 respectively. This proved that selective staffing is most important critical success factor in the HPWS implementation for Malaysian SME manufacturing industry. The article elaborates upon a successful model of postgraduate studies on lean manufacturing. The subject of the research was nine editions of the Kaizen Academy postgraduate studies organized by the Warsaw University of Technology and the Kaizen Institute in the years 2009–2018, that still enjoys interest in the market. A detailed qualitative analysis of this case, followed by a comparative analysis with other post-graduate programs of this type on the national, European, and global level should make it possible to find what is necessary to launch and actively operate for a long time in the (considerably competitive) market of qualification raising programs related to Lean Management (critical success factors). The study has also identified the differences between a successful program, analyzed in detail, and other available programs described in the literature and on the Internet. This has been achieved through a structured analysis of thirty-nine postgraduate programs identified by querying scientific databases and the Google Internet search engine. Best practices and models of postgraduate education on Lean Management have been discussed, and the thirty-nine programs comprising the identified sample have been compared. Considering the very general level of the data available in terms of the organization of postgraduate programs, it has also been assessed if they follow constructivism and experiential learning paradigms. This has been achieved by including the industrial days/visit indicator in the comparison. Given its high value, it has been identified as a success factor of the postgraduate curriculum on Lean Management.

This research paper shows a framework to conduct an empirical study in Malaysian automotive industry in order to improve their performance. There are factors which are effective factors in improving performance of Malaysian automotive companies namely top management support, cross functional teamwork, new product development (NPD) process, NPD strategies, and market research activities. The critical success factor of NPD is playing a fundamental role in determining the performance in Malaysian automotive companies. In this research study, a framework has been developed that includes critical success factors of NPD and project achievement to study their influence on the performance of Malaysian automotive companies. It is hoped that this paper can provide an academic source for both academicians and managers due to investigate the relationship between critical success factors of total NPD, project achievement and company performance in a systematic manner to increase successful rate of NPD progress.
