Constraint Satisfaction for Planning and Scheduling

As the current planning and scheduling technologies are coming together by assuming time and resource constraints in planning or by allowing introduction of new activities during scheduling, the role of constraint satisfaction as the bridging technology is increasing and so it is important for researchers in these areas to understand the underlying principles and techniques. The chapter introduces constraint satisfaction technology with emphasis on its applications in planning and scheduling. It gives a brief survey of constraint satisfaction in general, including a description of mainstream solving techniques, that is, constraint propagation combined with search. Then, it focuses on specific time and resource constraints and on search techniques and heuristics useful in planning and scheduling. Last but not least, the basic approaches to constraint modelling for planning and scheduling problems are presented.

AbstractDuring recent years, the development of new techniques for constraint satisfaction, planning, and scheduling has received increased attention, and substantial effort has been invested in trying to exploit such techniques to find solutions to real-life problems. In this paper, we present a survey on constraint satisfaction, planning, and scheduling from the Artificial Intelligence point of view. In particular, we present the main definitions and techniques, and discuss possible ways of integrating such techniques. We also analyze the role of constraint satisfaction in planning and scheduling, and hint at some open research issues related to planning, scheduling, and constraint satisfaction.

AbstractThe CNT framework (Constraint Network on Timelines) has been designed to model discrete event dynamic systems and the properties one knows, one wants to verify, or one wants to enforce on them. In this article, after a reminder about the CNT framework, we show its modeling power and its ability to support various modeling styles, coming from the planning, scheduling, and constraint programming communities. We do that by producing and comparing various models of two mission management problems in the aerospace domain: management of a team of unmanned air vehicles and of an Earth observing satellite.

Purpose Drawing on the natural resource-based view (NRBV) of the firm, this study aims to investigate the mediating role of sustainability performance management (SPM) practices in the relationship between corporate sustainability strategy (SS) and sustainability performance (SP). The conceptualization of SS and SPM practices follow the NRBV resources and capabilities to promote sustainability for competitiveness. Design/methodology/approach Data for the study were collected through a questionnaire from 114 small-medium to large organizations within environmentally sensitive industries operating in Malaysia. Findings The results indicate the indirect relationship between SS and SP through SPM practices. The results suggest that SS can only be realized through a broader management accounting control system (such as SPM practices) that provides information to generate, analyze and control environmental, social, economic and governance performance. Practical implications As some organizations may face their resource constraints, this study may help managers and management accountants prioritize their focus on SS and adopt the necessary SPM practices to enhance their SP. Originality/value This study sheds new light on the role of the SPM practices adopted by firms to manage their SS.

This chapter describes how security plays a vital role in cloud computing, as the name itself specifies the data can be stored from any place and can be owned by anyone. Even though the cloud offers many benefits such as flexibility, scalability and agility, security issues are still backlog the cloud infrastructure. Much research is being done on cloud security equal to the scheduling problems in the cloud environment. The customers under the cloud providers are very concerned about their data, which has been stored in the cloud environment. In this regard, it is essential for a cloud provider to implement some powerful tools for security, to provide a secure cloud infrastructure to the customers. Generally speaking, there are some foundational needs to be attained and some actions to be combined to ensure data security in both cloud, as well as, non-cloud infrastructure. This book chapter concentrates only on the security issues, security measures, security mechanisms, and security tools of the cloud environment.
