Use of Traffic Separation Techniques for the Transport of HSPA and R99 Traffic in the Radio Access Network with Differentiated Quality of Service

This article presents various traffic separation approaches to transmit HSPA (HSDPA/HSUPA) traffic in the existing ATM-based UMTS Radio Access Network, together with Release 99 (R99) traffic. The traffic separation technique enables QoS differentiations of HSPA and R99 traffic, while aiming to achieve a maximum utilization of the transport resources in the radio access network. The potential benefit of applying traffic separation and its impact on the performance of the transport network as well as the end users are explored in this article. The quantitative evaluations are provided by simulations. The results presented are obtained from a UMTS simulation model developed in this work which can transmit HSDPA and HSUPA traffic as well as R99 traffic simultaneously. The presented results demonstrate that applying traffic separation between HSPA and R99 traffic can considerably improve the performance of both HSPA and R99 traffic, and as well bring significant gain on efficient bandwidth utilization.

The fog radio access network (F-RAN) equipped with enhanced remote radio heads (eRRHs), which can pre-store some requested files in the edge cache and support mobile edge computing (MEC). To guarantee the quality-of-service (QoS) and energy efficiency of F-RAN, a proper content caching strategy is necessary to avoid coarse content storing locally in the cache or frequent fetching from a centralized baseband signal processing unit (BBU) pool via backhauls. In this paper we investigate the relationships among eRRH/terminal activities and content requesting in F-RANs, and propose an edge content caching strategy for eRRHs by mining out mobile network behavior information. Especially, to attain the inference for appropriate content caching, we establish a pre-mapping containing content preference information and geographical influence by an efficient non-uniformed accelerated matrix completion algorithm. The energy consumption analysis is given in order to discuss the energy saving properties of the proposed edge content caching strategy. Simulation results demonstrate our theoretical analysis on the inference validity of the pre-mapping construction method in static and dynamic cases, and show the energy efficiency achieved by the proposed edge content pre-caching strategy.

<p class="FigureCaption"><span>With the advent of several new cloud radio access network (C-RAN) technologies, today’s networking environment is dramatically altered and is experiencing a rapid transformation. One of the most important is ethernet based C-RAN, in support of which many products such as optical Ethernet switches have recently appeared on the market. This paper presents the performance analysis of such switches with respect to packet loss ratio (PLR), latency and packet delay variation (PDV). We employed the Simula based on discrete event modelling on Simula (DEMOS), a context class for discrete event simulation to simulate a cut-through optical ethernet switch under two types of traffics: high priority (HP) traffic and low priority (LP) traffic. In this way, the paper evaluates the optical Ethernet switch performance quantitatively. The results obtained from the simulator showed that the high quality of service was reflected on HP traffic and the low quality of service in LP traffic. Hence, HP traffic can be used for transporting radio over ethernet (RoE) traffic while LP traffic can used for transporting time insensitive application. It is also found that HP traffic experiences a PDV equals to the duration of maximum sized LP traffic in Optical Ethernet switch.</span></p>
